Anurag Kashyap reveals first cut of Gangs Of Wasseypur was over 7 hours long; adds Tigmanshu Dhulia improvised “Tumse na ho payega” dialogue
Acclaimed filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has revealed that the first cut of his 2012 gangster drama Gangs Of Wasseypur was over seven hours long. The film was eventually released in two parts, but Kashyap says that he had originally planned for it to be a trilogy.
"I just kept writing," Kashyap said in an interview with Cyrus Broacha. "I thought it would be three films. But somehow Vikram(Aditya) Motwane came in, saved it, and it ended up as two films. It could have been three films because my first cut was seven and a half hours long."
Kashyap also revealed that the second part of Gangs of Wasseypur was "mostly improvised". He said that he believes that filmmakers are too scared of improvisation these days, and that they just want to stick to a formula that has brought them success in the past.
"The second part of Gangs of Wasseypur was mostly improvised," Kashyap said. "I don't think that happens much today. I think filmmakers are scared of improvisation. They just want to stick to a formula that has worked for them in the past."
Gangs of Wasseypur is known for its quirky dialogues, and one of the most widely quoted lines from the film is "Tumse na ho payega". Kashyap revealed that this line was improvised by Tigmanshu Dhulia, who played the role of Ramadhir Singh in the film.
"It was not even me," Kashyap said. "Tigmanshu Dhulia improvised it. He was just so good and natural that we were like rolling with laughter. It was done there and then."
Kashyap believes that his actors manage to bring the best out of themselves because he gives them a free pass to experiment. He said that he does not give his scripts to actors in advance, because he believes that this allows them to be more natural and spontaneous on set.
"I just say what not to do, I don't tell them what to do," Kashyap said. "I let them go. The good scenes have come out of that only. Scripts should be just a map. That's why I don't share my scripts with actors."
Anurag Kashyap is currently seen playing a negative role in the ZEE5 film Haddi, which is led by actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
