Anurag Kashyap on his films releasing on illegal websites: “I used to identify with porn in the sense that I was like porn; people watched my films secretly”

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has returned to acting with the newly released Haddi. The film sees him in an antagonist role. While promoting his film, Kashyap spoke about how he faced difficulties in his initial years in getting his films to cinema halls and how some of them were released on illegal websites.

On the podcast Cyrus Says hosted by Cyrus Broacha, the host spoke about Kashyap’s films which were not released in theatres and were released on piracy websites. Anurag agreed and said, “That’s the story of my life.” He also said that he only earned one-eighth of what he could have earned because his films were released illegally. He said, “People used to walk up to me and say, ‘Aapki film dekhi (Saw your film)’ and I used to be like ‘Lekin kahan dekhi (But where did you watch it)?’ I used to identify with porn in the sense that I was like porn; people watched my films secretly.”

He further said that people would watch his films and then question his “morality and character”. He said, “At that time, the critics used to be like, ‘What kind of a guy is this?’”

Meanwhile, Anurag Kashyap is currently seen in Haddi, which is now streaming on ZEE5. The film is led by Nawazuddin Siddiqui. ALSO READ: Anurag Kashyap shares thoughts on Kartik Aaryan getting his due in Bollywood; says, “Jisko bahut jaldi milta…”
