Imran Khan says comparisons with Ranbir Kapoor in early years left an unpleasant aftertaste: “A couple of particularly ugly things would come out”

Debuts around the same time, undeniable talent, and charming screen presence - it's no wonder Imran Khan and Ranbir Kapoor were constantly compared in the early years of their careers. Both Imran and Ranbir entered Bollywood around 2007, Ranbir with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya and Imran with Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na. However, as Imran himself revealed in a recent interview, these comparisons weren't something either actor truly subscribed to.

As Imran shared, the comparisons left an "unpleasant aftertaste." He never saw Ranbir as a competition, and according to their conversations, the feeling was mutual. In a recent conversation with India Today, Imran recognized Ranbir's dedication to his craft, his passion as a "cinephile" (a film lover), and his disinterest in the gossip-driven comparisons. “Unfortunately, it would always leave a very unpleasant aftertaste because that’s not how I viewed it and from my conversations with Ranbir back then, he never got into that thing either,” he said.

Imran revealed that whenever "particularly ugly things" were written about them, they'd reach out to each other. A simple "Listen, did you see what they said? Are we cool?" served as a reminder that they were in this together, not against each other. He added, “My recollection of him is that he was also very… He took the craft very seriously. He is a cinephile. And he was also not engaging in that thing. This is the spicy stuff that they like to talk about in the gossip magazines, so it leaves an unpleasant aftertaste but if neither of us are buying into it, then it doesn’t come into that part. I recall here and there a couple of particularly ugly things would come out and we would always make it a point to kind of reach out and say ‘Listen, aisa aisa hua hai, are we cool?'”
