EXCLUSIVE: Composer Sulaiman Merchant reveals the two albums of theirs that did well, but the movies did not
The Daytime Emmy-nominated musical duo Salim and Sulaiman Merchant are among India's finest musician duos. The duo composes music predominantly for Hindi films.
Over the years, music composers Salim-Sulaiman have managed to become one of the most revered names in the Hindi film music. From Chak De! India, Fashion to Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Band Baaja Baaraat and much more, the Merchant brothers have come a long way creating smash hit music albums for numerous Bollywood films; for decades now.
In an exclusive music room interview with Bollywood Hungama, while sharing the interesting behind-the-scenes stories of how they created their chart-buster scores, Salim and Sulaiman talk about their two albums that did well but the film didn’t. Talking about their albums for the film Kurbaan, Salim asserted, “That is an amazing album. I think it’s one of our best albums.”
Sulaiman then added, “It’s surprising the film didn’t do so well unfortunately, but it’s one of those films where the film doesn’t do well but their songs become evergreen. I think there are only two such films that we’ve done, that I remember, whose songs became a hit. Kaal.” Agreeing to him, Salim added, “Yeah, that’s true. Songs from Kaal did really well.”
Directed by Rensil D'Silva, Kurbaan is a 2009 action-thriller film starring Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor. While Kaal is a 2005 supernatural horror film starring Ajay Devgn, Vivek Oberoi, Esha Deol, John Abraham and Lara Dutta.
