Actor Kunal Kemmu turns a year older today. The actor recently made waves with his directorial debut in Madgaon Express, which earned critical acclaim as well as box office success. Before venturing into direction, Kunal delivered some of the greatest performances in his career spanning almost two decades. From the dark and gritty alleys of Kalyug to the laugh riots of the Golmaal series, and the nuanced performances in Traffic Signal and Lootcase, Kemmu has continually pushed the boundaries of his acting prowess.

Today, as we celebrate his birthday, it's the perfect time to take a stroll down memory lane and revisit his most memorable films.

Kemmu demonstrated his ability to take on diverse roles in the film Traffic Signal. Directed by Madhur Bhandarkar, Traffic Signal delves into the lives of people who earn their livelihood around a traffic signal in Mumbai. Kemmu played Silsila, a street-smart young man managing the daily struggles and politics of life on the streets. His realistic portrayal earned him praise from both audiences and critics, showcasing his ability to adapt to gritty, real-life characters.

Kunal Kemmu started his film career as a child actor with notable roles in movies like Raja Hindustani and Zakhm. His breakthrough came in 2005 with Kalyug, where he played Kunal P. Darr in a story about the adult entertainment industry. His performance was praised for its depth and intensity, earning him critical acclaim.

Kemmu showed his comic side in the Golmaal series. His character, Laxman, quickly became a fan favorite due to his impeccable timing and unique humor. He continued to play this role in later films, proving his versatility and solidifying his place in commercial cinema.

In Kalank, set in pre-independence India, Kemmu played Abdul, a complex character caught in a story of love and betrayal. Despite sharing the screen with industry heavyweights like Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt, Kemmu's performance stood out. He portrayal of Abdul added significant emotional weight to the film, further demonstrating his range and capability as an actor.

In 2020, Kemmu starred in Lootcase, a comedy-drama where he played Nandan Kumar, a middle-class man who finds a suitcase full of cash. His performance combined humour and vulnerability, earning widespread appreciation and further proving his versatility as an actor. Lootcase was praised for its witty narrative.

Rajshri Productions’ Mahesh Bhatt directorial Saaransh completes 40 years today. The film marked the debut of Anupam Kher and it also starred Rohini Hattangadi, Suhas Bhalekar, Soni Razdan, Madan Jain and Nilu Phule. It told the story of a senior citizen couple BV Pradhan (Kher) and Parvati (Hattangadi) who are trying to come to terms with the tragic loss of their son in a violent incident in the US. They get able support from Pradhan’s best friend Vishwanath (Bhalekar).

Following the death of their son, the couple rents out his room to an aspiring actress Sujata (Razdan). She has an affair with Vilas (Jain), the son of a famous politician Gajanan Chitre (Phule), and gets pregnant. Pradhan and Parvati were contemplating suicide out of grief, but Sujata’s pregnancy motivates them to live, although for different reasons. Saaransh has stood the test of time for four decades as the film is still considered a classic.

On the film’s 40th anniversary, prominent people from the Rajshri Productions banner – Managing Director Kamal Kumar Barjatya, Director Ajit Kumar Barjatya and General Manager PK Gupta – sat down to have an exclusive chat regarding the film with this writer from Bollywood Hungama at their residence in Mumbai.

Kamal Kumar Barjatya said that they were sure with their end product before the release. “We were sure that the film would turn out to be memorable. There is always this uncertainty of how it would do commercially. But we were very sure of the film getting critical acclaim, which was later proved,” he said.

The film came out in the 80s when hero-centric action films were the norm. But despite that, the banner showed faith in Mahesh Bhatt’s subject. “We had liked the subject. At that time, the production used to be handled by Raj babu (late Raj Kumar Barjatya). He used to select these subjects. Saaransh was one of the selections made by him,” added Kamal Kumar Barjatya.

Gupta recalled how Bhatt narrated the film to the Raj Kumar Barjatya back then. “The meeting had taken place in Seth ji’s (late founder of Rajshri Films Tarachand Barjatya) room. In two and a half hours, Mahesh ji showed the whole film (while narrating). It was with such elaborate detailing that it will be shot in Shivaji Park, etc. There was complete clarity in his mind.”

Interestingly, Anupam Kher, in his debut film, was only 28 when he played a senior citizen. His casting happened through Bhatt. Talking about the banner’s relation with the actor following Saaransh, the three gentlemen said that he considers Rajshri as his home.

Rohini Hattangadi was also selected by Bhatt. She was also under 30 years of age when she played a senior citizen in the film. “Gandhi (in which she played Kasturba Gandhi) had already released. She had become known after that film. And we felt she would fit well in this role,” said Kamal Kumar Barjatya.

Interestingly, a number of trial shows of Saaransh took place at the preview theatre of Rajshri Productions. The screenings were attended by more than 100 prominent people from the film industry. Apart from them, Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray was also one of the guests to see the film before its release. “It’s a 17-seater theatre. Thackeray ji liked the film, and he gave his blessings. He praised everyone’s work. He met Seth ji too,” revealed Ajit Kumar Barjatya.

Not many would know that veteran filmmaker David Dhawan also had an important contribution in Saaransh as the film’s Editor. “It was a very good experience (working with Dhawan). He used to work day and night in our editing room. He used to be present 24 hours whenever we needed,” recalled Kamal Kumar Barjatya.

Even though Eid 2024 lacked a Salman Khan release, the superstar has unveiled a grand project titled Sikandar to make up for it. This action extravaganza marks Khan's first collaboration with director AR Murugadoss, and filming is set to commence in June 2024. Murugadoss is currently juggling projects, including an action film featuring Tamil star Sivakarthikeyan (tentatively titled SK23). To ensure a smooth transition to Sikandar, he aims to wrap up a significant portion of SK23 before diving into Khan's film.

“Murugadoss wants to complete as much of SK23 as possible before Sikandar goes on floors,” an insider revealed, according to a Mid-day report. The plan involved shooting the initial schedule of Sikandar in May, followed by a return to Sivakarthikeyan's film in June. From July onwards, Murugadoss will devote his full attention to Sikandar.

With a target Eid 2025 release, the team is working tirelessly to meet the deadline despite the director's packed schedule. “To avoid any delays, Murugadoss has assembled a dedicated team to expedite the completion of SK23,” the source added.

Another report in the same publication revealed that the pre-production began last week in May, paving the way for a June shoot. The first schedule will take place in Mumbai, with location scouting currently underway to finalize filming spots. Additionally, Salman Khan will be involved in a photoshoot towards the end of May, followed by the commencement of principal photography after June 20.

Action sequences are a priority for Murugadoss, and the action directors are busy choreographing these set pieces. Salman Khan has already begun his preparations. “Salman insists on performing the action sequences himself. He has modified his workout regimen to achieve a chiseled physique,” the source revealed.

Table reads with Khan and leading lady Rashmika Mandanna are expected to start in early June. A significant portion of the film will be shot in Mumbai and Hyderabad before the team embarks on an international schedule. To ensure Khan's safety, considering past threats, filming locations will be disclosed on a need-to-know basis.

Sikandar marks Murugadoss's highly anticipated return to Hindi cinema after an eight-year hiatus following Akira (2016). This project also reunites Khan with producer Sajid Nadiadwala, the duo behind blockbuster hits like Kick, Judwaa, and Mujhse Shaadi Karogi. Tiger Shroff completed 10 years in Bollywood on May 23. The actor had a stunning debut and became the darling of the masses in no time. But his last three films were disasters at the box office. The debacle of his latest release, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, especially has hit him hard. As per recent reports, he is left with no film and might have to reduce his fee. Bollywood Hungama spoke to trade experts to understand what went wrong with the actor, who was considered the next superstar.

Vishek Chauhan, owner of Roopbani Cinema in Purnia, Bihar, explained, “Tiger broke out with Heropanti (2014). No one expected it to do well. A similar kind of launch happened for Sooraj Pancholi with Hero (2015). He was launched with much more fanfare than Tiger. Heropanti had a much quieter release but it managed to be a success. Baaghi (2016) was a bigger hit. Then, he was seen in A Flying Jatt (2016) and Munna Michael (2017). Though these films flopped, they opened well in single screens. With Baaghi 2 (2018), he became a star to watch out for.”

He added, “However, all these years, he didn’t grow as a performer. He kept repeating himself in film after film. An actor needs to add some value. Akshay Kumar was also introduced as an action hero. He milked it to a point and then he changed gears. Even Salman Khan shifted from romance to other genres like romcom, comedy, action, etc. These stars bring in a lot of variety. That’s why they have survived. Tiger, sadly, has not been able to do so.”

Trade veteran Taran Adarsh remarked, “When he debuted, people criticized his dialogue delivery. But the sincerity in his performance was very evident. Over the years, he started doing the same kind of roles. There’s no variation. I have said time and again that comedy is serious business. You can’t expect that just because you are doing some comedy, people are going to laugh at it. Instead, people are going to laugh at you, not on the scene, if it falters. And he faltered big time with Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. In any case, it was a terrible film and hence, its disaster fate doesn’t come as a surprise.”

Vishek Chauhan agreed, “He can’t do comedy on his own. He needs actors around him to push that side. He can’t excel in drama while he is awkward in doing romance. He can simply dance and fight well. But that has a limit. Also, the audience has rewarded him enough for his dance and fights. Baaghi did Rs. 80 crores while Baaghi 2 collected double. The latter was illogical, showing Manoj Bajpayee controlling some island in Goa! Yet, it earned Rs. 160 crores.”

He also said, “If you pick up his first film and his recent release Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, you won’t see any growth in him as an actor. As a result, the audience has lost interest in him as he is not able to score in emotions. Until you don’t show Sunny Deol type emotions in action or stir people, you won’t be able to make an impact.”

He gave examples to prove his point saying, “He’s very limited as an actor and that is what the audience is demanding from him. Look at what Ranbir Kapoor achieved in Animal (2023). Look at the emotional depth of his performance. Does Tiger Shroff have that kind of ability? That is what the audience is looking for.”

Even Hollywood stars, known for action, evolved, said Vishek, “Jason Statham came just as an action hero. But he has grown. The same goes for Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis. They grew and did comic and emotional roles, something that Tiger isn’t able to achieve.”

Taran Adarsh exulted, “He reached his peak with War (2019), where he did well and stood by himself. So, he has the potential. Also, he’s a thorough professional. I have never heard a single producer complain about him or claim that he’s unprofessional. But you are as good as your last Friday. In his case, if you give one flop, you can be pardoned. But if it’s a hattrick of flops, then there’s a problem.”

Girish Johar, producer and film business analyst, noted, “At the basic level, the script selection has gone wrong with him. The plots in his films were regular mill of the stuff. It was nothing new.” He also said that the heroines opposite him don’t have a meaty character and are shown as bimbettes. He said, “This also affects his performance. The characters around you are as critical.”

Vishek Chauhan also added, “The filmmakers with whom he’s working are also not growing. We don’t have enough directors who can make a good action film with him. Even if we make action, it is targeted at just one set of audiences. Arre poora masala banao na. Cinema needs to cater to everyone and that is missing in Bollywood. Actors like Tiger Shroff are victims of it.”

He continued, “30 years back, if he was acting, then Raj Kanwar, Rajkumar Santoshi, Darshan brothers, etc would have done justice to him. Right now, 95% of filmmakers are out of range for him.”

Course correction

Taran Adarsh explained what he can do to get back on track saying, “Tiger needs to hone his skills and craft. The audience has become very ruthless and their verdict is loud and clear. You need to change and give them variation. You can’t be flying in the air and doing acrobatic stunts in all films.”

Trade analyst Atul Mohan agreed, “He needs to reinvent himself as an actor. His look is also the same. The way he was looking on the poster of Heropanti, he looks the same in Baaghi’s poster. There’s no variety in his appearance. Hence, he needs to reinvent and do different characters. Also, his action is the same.”

Taran Adarsh suggested, “He should take a break like Amitabh Bachchan and Dilip Kumar did. Even Shah Rukh Khan took a break and he’s the mightiest of all. He was away for 4 years and look how he returned with a bang. Hence, Tiger should go on a sabbatical for a couple of months. He should not be in a hurry to sign a film or make an announcement. Some actors do that and it shows their insecurity.”

Atul Mohan complained, “He needs to change his team. Also, this trend of routing your scripts through agencies should be done away with. 20-25-year-old kids are a part of these agencies. What knowledge do they have of the scripts? Earlier, filmmakers used to simply drop on the actors’ set and narrate the film. Now, it is not possible. At times, the manager’s fifth assistant reads the script and takes the call. This is a problem not just with Tiger but many other new actors. They feel the agency is making their work simpler. No, they are not. They are ruining your career as good scripts don’t reach them.”

He also said, “Many of these actors are working with the same 3-4 filmmakers. Why is this happening? Do the other filmmakers not have stories for these actors?”

Girish Johar opined, “I would suggest that he should do away with action-based choreography. He should not do away with action. That’s a good genre that he excels in. But I want to see him in intense roles or thrillers. That would help him grow his audience. Like, I would love to see him do what Sunny Deol did in Arjun (1985). If done well, it can work big time not just in metro cities but also in tier 2 and 3 centres. He just needs the right writer and director who portray him correctly.” He also noted, “He can also follow the footsteps of John Abraham.”

Vishek Chauhan, meanwhile, unabashedly stated, “Tiger’s future lies down South. He should work with South directors and do at least four films with them. They’ll bring out his true potential and revive his career. No one in Bollywood will be able to help him.”

To conclude

As Tiger Shroff completed a decade on May 23, he should work on consolidating his position for the next 10 years, said experts. Taran Adarsh said, “It’s high time he changed.” Girish Johar said, “He has a long way to go and has the star power (to bounce back).”

Firoz Khan, a television actor most known for impersonating Amitabh Bachchan in the hit program Bhabi Ji Ghar Pe Hai, died of a heart attack. According to reports, the actor had a heart attack in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh, on Thursday morning.

Firoz had been in Badaun for quite some time, taking part in numerous activities while being there. Just one day before his death, he posted a video of himself reenacting Big B's classic moment from the film Coolie.

Mourning his demise, Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai actor Saumya Tandon told Indian Express, “Absolutely shocked and deeply saddened. He was too young to leave. Worked briefly with him, but I remember him as quiet, polite and so respectful on sets. He was so talented. I can’t ever forget the episode where he became Amitabh Bachchan. It was such a hilarious episode and he was so funny. We were laughing as we were filming the scene. And him as dhobi was so special. As I talk, all the scenes done with him are flashing in front of my eyes. Uff this is soo sad. I wish this is all a rumour.”

Charrul Malik, Firoz Khan's co-star in Bhabi Ji Ghar Pe Hai, paid tribute to him and fondly recalled their time together. She said, “It’s very sad news. I met him several times during award shows and on the show. He was a very gentle and down-to-earth person. His comic timing was amazing. He used to be very happy and cheerful. He once asked to make a reel together, but we never got a chance to do that.”

Binaiferr Kohli, the producer of Bhabi Ji Ghar Pe Hai, also remembered Firoz's warmth and sensitivity. She recalled, “He was the nicest, sweetest person on the set. He was very pure and sweet and would get scared quickly that somebody was going to scold him. After Covid, he went into a shell and needed help. I asked him to take up therapy. He had lost his mojo for acting. He was very sceptical about performing. But I asked him to come on the set and be with everyone. Then his mother got seriously ill and passed away. Just a couple of months back, his mother expired, and he went further into depression.”

Reflecting on Firoz’s struggles, Kohli added, “Everybody on the set tried to call him for lunch and spend time with him. We thought of putting him in a scene so that he could get his spunk back, but he just wouldn’t come on the set. He was also having a lot of problems, and it weighed heavily on him because he was a gentle soul. I feel sad that such a nice, gentle, pure person is no more.”

In addition to Bhabi Ji Ghar Pe Hai, Khan was seen in numerous television shows, including Jija Ji Chhat Par Hai, Saheb Bibi Aur Boss, Happu Ki Ultan Paltan, and Shaktimaan. He was also featured in Adnan Sami's music video for ‘Thodi Si Tu Lift Kara De’.

KK, the singer with the melodious voice, passed away on May 31, 2022, tragically after performing at a concert in Kolkata. And the last song that he sang is all set to be out soon. It’s a part of the film Savi, which coincidentally, is scheduled to release on KK’s second death anniversary. Mukesh Bhatt threw light on this aspect and a lot more at the trailer launch of Savi.

Mukesh Bhatt said, “Music is my strength. If you see the track record of the last 40 years, our films might not have worked, but the music has always been a hit. This is the core strength I have with my music. But there are some films which might be love stories but have the base of a thriller. For example, Sadak (1991) was not a romantic film. It was a dark thriller. Yet, its music was a big hit. The same goes for Murder (2004). In Savi, the music is relevant to the film and it’ll definitely appeal to you because it has a Vishesh Films trademark. And I am proud of it (smiles). I am sure you’ll enjoy it.”

He then revealed, “A song in the film is sung by KK, my dear friend. I have extremely fond memories of him. He sang some of the best songs for us, be it in Jannat (2008), Gangster (2006), etc. The last song that he sang happened to be for this film. A week after he recorded the song, he passed away. That song is a tribute to a great friend of mine. I wish he was here. I miss him. The song will resonate the love and affection he has had for Mukesh Bhatt and Vishesh Films. You’ll know what I am talking about once the song is out. KK has sung the song in a mind-blowing way.”

Sometime later, a journalist commented that Mukesh Bhatt organized a success party even before his film was out. Mukesh immediately clarified, “I have not thrown the success party of my film a day before release! Your information is completely wrong!”

The filmmaker continued, “I make a profit on every film. My brother has been a director. We worked with many outside directors like Anurag Basu, Vikram Bhatt, Mohit Suri, etc. I always tell my creative team, ‘Filmmaking is a creative enterprise. When you talk about art, don’t mess around with movies. Buy a Picasso. It’s cheaper’! You have to work within the economic package. I am here to entertain you and to give you a very strong narrative. And I am also here to stay in business. My job is to manufacture glamour and not to become a victim of it!”

Savi’s trailer launch was also graced by lead actress Divya Khossla and director Abhinay Deo.

The much-loved actress of Bollywood, Alia Bhatt recently was missing from the Lok Sabha Elections along with a few other actors who supposedly do not hold Indian passports. While her husband Ranbir Kapoor posed for the paparazzi after giving his vote, Bhatt decided to give the same a miss which sparked several conversations on social media, wherein netizens were seen debating about her citizenship as they brought up the subject of her holding a British passport.

In the recent debate, as netizens continued to question her absence at the voting booth, a post shared by Alia Bhatt on her social media has left many of them wondering if this is a response to the ongoing discussion about her citizenship. However, there has been no confirmation on whether there is any link between them. Alia took to Instagram to share a note on her story, which read, "Love. There's no argument, no matter how strong, that can overcome that word.” The note also provided a reference for the line which belonged to the book ‘The Palace of Illusions – Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’.

For the unversed, Alia’s mother Soni Razdan comes from a British household since her mother has been in England for all her life. In fact, Bhatt even made a reference to the same during the promotions of her Hollywood debut Heart Of Stone when she was answering a quiz with her co-stars Gal Gadot and Jamie Dornan. In the interview, she had mentioned that while her grandmother has lived in Birmingham all her life, she was raised in India.

Speaking of her professional commitments, Alia Bhatt has wrapped up the Dharma film Jigra where she will be seen alongside The Archies actor Vedang Raina. Along with that, she will reunite with husband Ranbir Kapoor on the big screen after Brahmastra for Love & War, co-starring Vicky Kaushal. Former Bigg Boss contestant Sushant Divgikar, also known as Rani KoHenoor, recently experienced a horrific incident when their house caught fire. The blaze was caused by an air conditioner explosion in the living room during dinner. The fire spread rapidly to the open kitchen and office space, causing extensive damage to almost everything, including awards, appliances, furniture, official documents, certificates, and makeup equipment.

According to Divgikar’s manager, “The air conditioner in the living room of the home blasted when they were having dinner and caused the fire which quickly spread to the open kitchen area and office space area damaging mostly everything including awards, appliances, all the furniture and official documents, certificates and make-up equipment and performance outfits. It’s a huge loss but everyone in the family survived and was unharmed.” The family is currently staying at Sushant's parents' place, and the shock of the incident still lingers.

Sushant took to social media to confirm the incident, sharing, "This is to confirm - There was a huge fire in my home over the weekend. Please swipe for details." Just as the phoenix rises from the ashes, I WILL RISE, AGAIN! Please pray for me and mine." The response from fans and the community has been overwhelmingly supportive. "The biggest gift is we are all alive and are safe but please keep us in your prayers. This fire didn't take me, so here I am and I promise to make the most of it! Please send in only love and prayers. Baaki mehnat kar ke aajaayega (The rest will come with hard work)."

Sushant Divgikar's resilience and positive outlook in the face of such a devastating event are truly inspiring. The highly anticipated filming of Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana finally began earlier this year, albeit after facing a few hurdles. After a brief pause to rework the costumes, the production commenced at Film City in Mumbai. This followed a period of meticulous planning and adjustments, including a crucial phase of look tests with the updated outfits for the cast. Despite the change in production hands, with Madhu Mantena exiting the project, the film's journey hasn't been entirely smooth sailing. While Mantena's departure initially sparked rumours of a potential shift in direction, reports now suggest he has requested a halt in filming until he receives appropriate compensation.

According to a report in Mid-day, an inside source said the shoot of Tiwari's mythological epic was indeed stalled due to a copyright infringement case. “Filming continued for a few days after the notice, but has been on hold since last week. The legalities need to be sorted out, and filming will only resume after a consensus is reached on the matter,” revealed the source, who confirms the film stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, alongside Sunny Deol, Yash, and Sai Pallavi.

While production is currently on hold, sources from the production house assured fans that the film has not been shelved. Shooting is expected to recommence within three weeks. The delay is attributed to scheduling conflicts with the lead actors.

Ranbir Kapoor is committed to Sanjay Leela Bhansali's project Love & War later this year, and Sunny Deol has filming lined up for Border 2. The production team is working on a schedule that minimizes disruption caused by their absence. The film will be shot in two parts, with a six-month gap between the release of the first and second installments.

According to a report in Pinkvilla, sources close to the production revealed that Nitesh Tiwari and his team are envisioning Ramayana as a grand two-part saga. Given the epic scale and complexity of the story, the makers have opted for this approach to effectively narrate the tale. Unlike most film productions where the success of the first part determines the green light for a sequel, Ramayana will be filmed concurrently.

Reports suggest that a grand audio-visual announcement for Ramayana is expected soon, showcasing the film's global talent pool. While the cast boasts of actors from across India, the technical team follows a similar international collaboration model. As previously reported, the music for Ramayana will be a joint composition by the legendary Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman. ALSO READ: Makers of Ramayana put curtains on set to avoid further leaks

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap is back with a vengeance. It was reported last month that he's gearing up for a gritty, hard-hitting thriller featuring Bobby Deol in the lead role. The project, currently untitled, has begun filming in Mumbai, and will also see Sanya Malhotra in the lead role along with Joju George and Saba Azad.

According to a report in Peeping Moon, Sanya Malhotra, who previously shared screen space with Deol in Shah Rukh Khan's production Love Hostel, reunites with him for this Anurag Kashyap directorial. Joining the ensemble cast for the first time in Hindi cinema is renowned Malayalam actor Joju George. This marks his foray into Bollywood. Completing the trio of new additions is Saba Azad, who garnered much praise for her role in the hit Sony LIV series Rocket Boys. All three actors, Malhotra, George, and Azad, will play pivotal roles alongside Bobby Deol, with their characters intricately woven into the plot.

While the exact details of the story remain tightly under wraps, the report suggests that it's a powerful thriller inspired by a sensitive real-life event. The film promises to be a thought-provoking exploration of a significant issue, delivered in Kashyap's signature raw and unflinching style.

Nikhil Dwivedi takes the producer's mantle. Scriptwriting duties are shared by the talented Sudip Sharma, whose credits include NH10, Udta Punjab, Paatal Lok, and Kohrra, and Abhishek Banerjee, who previously penned the script for Anushka Sharma's 2018 horror film Pari.

The team officially began filming on May 14, and the shoot will primarily take place in Mumbai, wrapping up by June 2024. With a swift production schedule, the film is aiming for a theatrical release later this year. The months of April and May have been quite dry for the film industry as very few films caught the attention of the moviegoers. But from May-end, the season of movies will commence with a bang. In July, an interesting clash will take place at the box office between Akshay Kumar, Kamal Haasan and Scarlett Johansson.

Yesterday, the makers of Indian 2 announced that their much-awaited film will be released in cinemas on July 12. Along with the release date, the producers dropped a stunning poster of the Kamal Haasan starrer and also announced that the first single will be out on May 22.

Indian 2 will have a multi-language release. Besides Kamal Haasan, it also stars S J Suryah, Kajal Aggarwal, Siddharth and Rakul Preet Singh and is directed by Shankar. The first part was released in Hindi as Hindustani. Taking a leaf out of it, the sequel's Hindi version is called Hindustani 2. It has music by Anirudh Ravichander.

With Indian 2 releasing on July 12, it’ll clash with Sarfira, starring Akshay Kumar and Radhika Madan. It is the remake of the acclaimed Tamil film Soorarai Pottru (2020). Just like the original film, Sarfira is also directed by Sudha Kongara. It is based on the life of the Air Deccan founder G R Gopinath, who made air travel affordable for the common man. Paresh Rawal will also be seen in a pivotal role in the film.

That’s not all. Vedaa, starring John Abraham and Sharvari, will also hit cinemas on July 12. It is directed by Nikkhil Advani and its stylishly cut teaser caught attention. It is backed by Zee Studios.

Lastly, one of the significant Hollywood releases of the year, Fly Me To The Moon, will also hit cinemas on July 12. It’ll be released by Sony Pictures and their India division recently announced that it’ll hit cinemas on the second Friday of July in India, just like in the rest of the world. Its entertaining trailer is also attached to Sony’s latest Hollywood release, The Garfield Movie.

Fly Me To The Moon stars Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum in lead roles and is set in the 1960s NASA when the USA was attempting to send astronauts to the moon. The film has the potential to pull moviegoers due to the subject and Scarlett’s casting, who has a huge following in India.

It now remains to be seen whether this four-way clash will take place and how the distributors of Indian 2, Sarfira, Vedaa and Fly Me To The Moon will share screens.

Indian filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, known for his visually stunning and emotionally charged historical epics, has recently shed light on his creative process behind the highly talked about series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. Bhansali, whose dedication extends beyond box office success, prioritizes crafting immersive experiences for his audience. This series marked his first for a streaming platform and did get mixed reactions for its historical accuracy.

In a recent interview with Bollywood Hungama, Bhansali discussed his vision for Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, set against the backdrop of a bygone era.  While the narrative unfolds within a historical context, Bhansali emphasized that the series is driven by his artistic imagination. He aspires to create a world that resonates with viewers on a deeper level, even if the specific details deviate slightly from historical records.

When asked what fascinates him about depicting stories of courtesans, Bhansali said, “These women are, number one, beautiful. These women were very sophisticated and trained in etiquette and they knew the art of living in terms of poetry. They knew tradition, and they knew the art of classical dancing and classical music, but they also had stories of suffering that went through a lot of turmoil. And that was the fun of showing them all dressed in those diamonds and the things that they were saying something. They had their own inner politics; they had to help fight as much to survive as a middle-class woman would be or a lower-class woman, a woman or a man has to survive and they go through their own struggles.”

He continued, “So, I have not only shown the glamorous part but there is a lot of inner suffering of every close-up of every move of why she's reacting like this, what she went through, or what she wants to achieve. Or to stand by the tradition of every daughter having to be a tawaif as the girl protesting and saying I don't want to. So as a mother (Mallikajaan played by Manisha Koirala), she gives us the supreme sacrifice of getting out of it.”

“These are turmoil stories that we created, some from hearsay; some from real characters,” he stated. “Not my work is not supposed to be seen as if rooted in reality, in a documentary on Lahore and Heeramandi. It's an impression of Lahore. It is an impression of Heeramandi. It's an impression of artisans and living that life. I cannot understand how it can be realistic because I have not lived in that era. I have not seen that world, I cannot document it as, as clearly as the Heermandi of today from the Heeramandi of the 30s or 20s. So when you're creating a work of fiction, it is just to create an experience for you to say what maybe those women went through. That is the joy of filmmaking. I like to create an atmosphere and an impression on your mind of what I perceive that moment to be.”

He added, “These women fought for freedom. They were all trapped – Gangubai was trapped, Mastani was trapped. Women who are used for their beauty or their bodies, and have to survive because of that, or women who want to escape that lack of dignity. The lack of dignity is the worst punishment granted to a human being because dignity is every human being’s right. Every woman should be granted dignity. This is what Gangubai said even if I'm because of whatever circumstances forced into prostitution, then be proud. I'm proud that I'm a prostitute; I give my profession dignity. I will do it with commitment. So these women when they found a purpose in Azadi and freedom, people should understand that these are multi-layer women, they're just not about clothes and fancy songs and song picturisation. There is a lot more.”

Heeramandi, which translates to "Diamond Market," delves into the lives of courtesans within Lahore's red-light district during the British Raj. The series boasts an ensemble cast, including established actresses like Manisha Koirala and Sonakshi Sinha, alongside Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sharmin Segal and Sanjeeda Shaikh.

Kartik Aaryan, in a display of resilience mirroring the spirit of his upcoming film Chandu Champion, launched the movie's trailer in his hometown Gwalior on Saturday. This event came just days after Aaryan suffered a devastating personal loss – his relatives Manoj Chansoria and Anita Chansoria were among the 16 victims of a tragic hoarding collapse in Mumbai's Ghatkopar area during thunderstorm and rains. Their bodies were recovered two days later, and Aaryan had been present for their funeral. Yet, he stood alongside director Kabir Khan and producer Sajid Nadiadwala for the trailer launch in Gwalior.

“This is a dream come true moment for me,” he shared with the cheering crowd of over a thousand at the Captain Roop Singh Cricket stadium. “This is where I dreamt of becoming an actor, and to bring the toughest film of my career here is incredibly special.”

He acknowledged the emotional strain, stating, “Kaafi kuch chal raha hai meri life mein (a lot is going on in my life),” but emphasized the importance of moving forward, “the show must go on.”

Chandu Champion, directed by Kabir Khan, is a biographical drama inspired by the life of India's first Paralympics swimmer, Murlikant Petkar. Aaryan takes on the titular role, portraying Petkar's journey that undoubtedly demanded immense physical and mental transformation. Khan co-wrote the screenplay with Sumit Arora and Rohit Shukre, while Sajid Nadiadwala serves as producer under the Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment banner.

The trailer throws us into 1967, two years after a war injury knocks Chandu unconscious. We then embark on an emotional rollercoaster. A flashback reveals a young Chandu declaring his wrestling dreams to his teacher. Met with taunts and the mocking nickname "Chandu Champion," we see the spark that ignites his determination. This glimpse into his past hints at a journey of overcoming challenges and erasing that derisive label, setting the stage for a powerful story.

The film's release is slated for June 14, marking Aaryan's first silver screen appearance of 2024. He is also gearing up for the release of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 later this year. Two days back, the announcement video of Scam 2010 - The Subrata Roy Saga was released and it became a big talking point. Hansal Mehta, who directed Scam 1992, will direct Scam 2010. The announcement led to a lot of excitement among the fans of the series. But one person who was left aghast was Sandeep Singh. He has the rights to the life of Subrata Roy. In fact, on his birthday last year, he even announced the biopic Saharasri. Hence, shocked by the announcement of Scam 2010 - The Subrata Roy Saga, he has decided to take legal action against Hansal Mehta, producer Sameer Nair of Applause Entertainment and the streaming giant, Sony LIV.

Speaking exclusively with Bollywood Hungama, Sandeep Singh minced no words as he said, “The director, Hansal Mehta, was a good friend of mine. We worked on Aligarh (2016) together. He has the ability to pick up negative stories because he himself is a negative man. One day, his karma definitely will answer him. His karma is already answering him slowly.”

Sandeep Said then said, “Everybody knew, including Hansal Mehta, that I announced Saharasri last year and that I have been working on this film since 2019. Yet, he has gone ahead and made the announcement. He even made the conclusion that it was a scam, which even the Supreme Court has not concluded so far. I don’t know who gave him the right to do that. It’s a money-making racket which he falls for and I think he definitely wanted to do that through the Scam series. God bless him for that. But neither I nor Sahara India Parivar will take it lying down. We are going to the court. We’ll go against the director, the production house and the channel. We’ll try and stop this show because the official rights of Subrata Roy are with us and my banner, Legend Studios.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by SANDEEP SINGH (@officialsandipssingh)

Sandeep Singh then revealed how he managed to bag the rights, “I had met Mr Subrata Roy over lunch, for which he had invited me. I told him, ‘Dada, main khaana khaate waqt aapse ek gift chaha raha hoon. Maine suna hai ki aapke yahaan se koi khaali haath nahin jaata’. He asked me what I wanted from him. I expressed the desire to secure his life rights so that I could make a film or show on him. He did not say anything at first. But after lunch, he offered me mishti doi and said, ‘Yeh lo. Munh meetha karo. If I decide to give my life rights, it’ll be to you’. I asked me, ‘Dada, you know everybody in the industry. And yet, if you want to give me your rights, I’ll be very grateful’. He replied, ‘Yes, and it’s because of your intention. You are not here to make money. You are not here to give out the wrong story. Jo sachhai hai, woh tum dikhaao’.”

Talking about his research, the producer stated, “I met Tihar jail officials, the lawyers, Kapil Dev, Akhilesh Yadav, Virender Sehwag, his friends including the ones in the industry, etc. I recorded what they said about him. We even worked on the casting. Then last year, he passed away. That shook us and things came to a standstill. Then yesterday, when I saw the announcement video, we all were left shocked.”

Sandeep Singh also revealed, “Sameer Nair called me and my director (Sudipto Sen) to his office a few months ago. He gave us the proposal to do Scam’s next season with us since we have the rights to Subrata Roy’s life. We rejected the offer and categorically told him that his is not a scam story. He said, ‘If you are uncomfortable with the proposal, then no worries’. And few months later, they shocked us and cheated us by announcing Scam 2010. But they’ll have an answer from us very soon and we’ll make sure that they step back.”

Did Sandeep Singh call Hansal Mehta or Sameer Nair after he saw Scam 2010’s announcement video? Sandeep Singh retorted, “Did they try to speak to us before putting out the teaser? Our announcement came out last year on his birthday. Yet, why did they do so? The onus of having ethics falls on them, not on me. Hansal Mehta and Sameer Nair have known me for more than 15 years. They should have called and asked, ‘We are going ahead with Scam 2010. Is that okay?’. They knew that the rights were with me.”

Sandeep Singh said he’s saddened by the fact that going by the format of the series, it’ll show Subrata Roy in a negative light. “Hansal Mehta and Applause Entertainment think that they are bigger than the Supreme Court of India. They have concluded that it’s a scam though the Supreme Court has not even concluded that in the last 10 years. The case is still going on. Yet, they made this announcement as they wanted to have publicity and make money. This is where Bollywood fails because we cheat our friends and we tell the wrong story without knowing the facts,” he said.

He signed off by saying, “We have roped in an actor. When the right time comes, we’ll make the announcement. Meanwhile, this cheap publicity needs to be fought with. It’s a tough battle actually. Here was a man who never ran out of India, like other businessmen. Everyone else flew out but he didn’t. He went to the Supreme Court when he was caught. He got jailed and he came out. Everyone knows that he has provided the maximum employment after the Railways in India.”

Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar has been in news ever since its release. The grandeur of this Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial, as the filmmaker makes his big web-series debut, and the performances by actresses and actors have been receiving a lot of love from industry insiders as well as audiences too. However, it is SLB’s niece Sharmin Segal who found herself at the receiving end of trolls as many of them were quite brutal while reviewing her acting chops. Coming in support of the actress, was her co-star Richa Chadha, who essayed the character of Lajjo.

During an interaction, Richa Chadha addressed the matter of Sharmin Segal getting trolled for her performance in Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar and she told Pinkvilla, “I think truthfully, it is the audience’s right. It’s the audience’s prerogative that you like the show, you dislike the show. You like a performance, you dislike a performance”. However, the actress also maintained that one needs to be mindful of the fact that it doesn’t hurt the actor. “But what happens today, I think in the era of social media, when people start trolling, making memes, doing all that, that’s a bit hurtful, I think, for anyone. We must never be unkind because it can happen to you tomorrow. And everyone is a human being,” she added.

In the past, Taha Shah Badussha, who essayed the role of Tajdar, who is in love with Sharmin’s character Alamzeb, also came in defence of the actress wherein he stated that her ‘method’ for acting ‘involves being subtle’.

For the unversed, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar is a web-series set against the backdrop of pre-Independence that revolves around the lives of courtesans and explores a tale of love, power, betrayal, and freedom, featuring an ensemble cast of Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Richa Chadha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Pratibha Ranta, Sharmin Segal, among others as courtesans whereas Shekhar Suman, Adhyayan Suman, Fardeen Khan, play their patrons along with Taha Shah Badussha as the Nawab. The show is currently streaming on Netflix.

Arjun Kapoor's stint as a villain has come to an end! On Wednesday, the actor shared his excitement on social media after completing his filming for the upcoming action flick Singham Again. This marks a significant milestone for Kapoor, who expressed his joy at being part of director Rohit Shetty's renowned "cop universe." With Kapoor's filming wrapped, the baton seems to be passed to Ranveer Singh. Reports suggest Singh has finished a majority of his scenes for the Ajay Devgn-led cop film. The actor is expected to complete his portions by month-end.

According to a report in Mid-day, a source revealed, “There's some minor patchwork shooting remaining, which will be completed at Film City within the next two weeks.”

This conclusion leaves Singh with a crucial decision – what's next? Industry insiders hint at three potential projects on his slate: Aditya Dhar's gangster drama Dhurandhar, Prasanth Varma's upcoming film, and the highly anticipated Don 3 alongside Farhan Akhtar. The source further stated, “Singh is expected to commence shooting for Aditya's film in June. He's also been in talks with Prasanth Varma, known for HanuMan, regarding their next project, tentatively titled Rakshas.”

Rakshas is said to be a mythological film set in the pre-Independence era, with Singh portraying a morally ambiguous character. This unique role has reportedly piqued his interest. By the end of this month, Singh is likely to finalize the details of his next project. The current plan involves wrapping up Dhurandhar in a continuous shoot by July-end, followed by a break in August before diving into Varma's film in September.

Regarding Dhar’s project, a source told Bollywood Hungama anonymously a month ago, “Ranveer Singh and Aditya Dhar are very keen to make their first collaboration very special. They want to mount the film like the biggest action thriller set against the backdrop of politics and gang wars. The vision to make this requires a big budget and they are not able to align their vision with their studio partner.”

The source further informed that Aditya Dhar is now taking time off to rework the script and scale down some of the action sequences to bring it into a particular budget structure. “The market is not lucrative as the digital streaming market has come down in the last 2 years. With films not fetching the requisite value of digital rights, the studios have asked a lot of directors to rework their budgets. Aditya Dhar is now working to get budgets in place,” the source said. What is the similarity between Vicky Kaushal and Dharmesh Darshan? Both celebrate their birthdays today. The latter, who turns 55, began his career as a director at the young age of 24 with the action romantic entertainer Lootere (1993). His second film, Raja Hindustani (1996) emerged as one of the biggest hits of Indian cinema. Dhadkan (2000), meanwhile, is a cult classic and is remembered today for its music, plot and unconventional casting of Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty and Shilpa Shetty. Last year, Bollywood Hungama broke the news that Dharmesh Darshan has been offered Dhadkan 2. The news spread like wildfire, which only proved how that film continues to be loved. It also proved that Dharmesh Darshan’s popularity is intact.

Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to Dharmesh Darshan about his birthday plans. He smiled and said, “There are no plans. Next year, I’ll surely party (laughs).”

At a time when the industry is going through a tough time and action films are facing fatigue, a romantic musical like Dhadkan 2 can prove to be a success, just like the first part. When asked if he’d like to get back into direction, he said, “If cinema needs me, I will always be there, that too with age being still on my side and with my positivity.”

He continued, "As for Dhadkan 2, it may or may not be a sequel to one of my timeless classics or it may be an absolutely fresh take on modern cinema by a newly reinvented Dĥarmesh Sĥeela Darsĥan.”

We then asked him about memorable birthdays of his life, especially the ones celebrated with the members of the film fraternity. Dharmesh Darshan revealed, “I was never a show-off. But I remember this one birthday of mine when the producer of my film threw a surprise party for me. My best friends at that point – Aditya Chopra, Karan Johar, Anil Thadani, and Manish Malhotra – surprised me by being there at that very select dinner gathering.”

He also revealed, “The other memorable party was the one that I threw at the insistence of this same producer friend. It was held close to my house in Pali Hill at Napoli By Shatranj restaurant. Aditya Chopra and Karan Johar were in attendance and Akshay Kumar made a surprise visit. So sweet of him!”

In a recent interview with ETimes, Tushar Hiranandani, director Srikanth, made a surprising revelation regarding the fee charged by actor Sharad Kelkar. Known for his powerful performances in films like Goliyon Ki Raasleela-Ram Leela and Mohenjo Daro, Kelkar has a significant presence in both Hindi cinema and television. However, for his role in Srikanth, Sharad Kelkar accepted a mere Rs. 101 as his fee.

Hiranandani explained that initially, Kelkar demanded a substantial amount, reflecting his deserved market rate. However, after listening to the film's narration, Kelkar was so moved by the story and the opportunity that he decided to join the project despite the financial constraints. Tushar recounted, "When Sharad came to meet me, there was a price he quoted, and he deserves it also. But then I told him that it was difficult for me and requested him to listen to the narration."

The director further shared that it was Kelkar’s enthusiasm for the role that led to the unexpectedly low fee. The next day, producer Bhushan Kumar informed Hiranandani of Kelkar’s willingness to be part of the film at any cost. Kelkar’s character, Ravi, appears post-interval and plays a crucial role in the story. Hiranandani emphasized, "Sharad enters the film post interval and guess the fee on his Srikanth contract? It is just Rs 101! In reality, Ravi is the man behind the success of Srikanth Bolla."

Kelkar’s journey in the industry has not been without challenges. In a candid conversation with Siddharth Kannan, he opened about his past anger management issues, revealing a significant incident that led to surgery and a changed demeanor. Also, he struggled with a severe stammering issue early in his career, which he overcame with the support of his wife, Keerti Gaekwad. In a podcast with Maniesh Paul, he credited her with helping him through his most difficult times. "Then I met my wife. I am also lucky to have met a few wonderful people from my first show, who also helped me overcome it," he said.

Aamir Khan is bringing Christmas cheer this year with his upcoming film, Sitaare Zameen Par. This project promises to be both emotionally resonant and entertaining. Marking Khan's return to socially conscious cinema, the film tackles the challenges and triumphs of individuals with Down syndrome. Based on the Spanish sports dramedy Campeones, Sitaare Zameen Par is directed by RS Prasanna and began filming earlier this year. The movie is slated for a Christmas release.

The story revolves around Khan, playing a headstrong but ultimately kind-hearted basketball coach. As part of his community service, he's tasked with leading a Special Olympics basketball team. This team is anything but ordinary - it's brimming with talented individuals with diverse learning disabilities. News from the sets hints at a captivating narrative centred around the Paralympic Games, a prestigious international sporting event for differently-abled athletes.

Earlier, it was reported that the actor and the team would head to New Delhi for the shoot. However, there's a twist! Filming in Delhi, the capital of India has become significantly expensive. According to a report in Hindustan Times, the shooting permits for iconic locations like the Rajiv Chowk metro station or the international airport come with hefty price tags. Due to these rising costs, Sitaare Zameen Par's Delhi schedule has been significantly reduced. Originally planned for a month, the shoot will now be condensed to just 8-10 days in July. The team will likely recreate some Delhi scenes in other locations like Lucknow or Madhya Pradesh to stay within budget.

A source previously revealed to the publication that the film was to be shot extensively in Delhi, with iconic locations like Lal Qila (Red Fort), Lodhi Garden, Purani Dilli (Old Delhi), and Tyagraj Stadium serving as backdrops. “The schedule is set for one month, between May and June. The children will indulge in various Paralympic Games for the shoot. The schedule is set for one month, between May and June. The children will indulge in various Paralympic Games for the shoot,” the source said, adding, “It will be shot at different spots in Delhi, including Lal Qila, Lodhi Garden, Purani Dilli, and Tyagraj stadium. It is being shot in various parts of Delhi, as they don’t want all the kids to travel to NCR regions.”

Directed by RS Prasanna, the movie began filming in February 2024 and is slated to hit theatres by Christmas.

Interestingly, a few weeks ago, Bollywood Hungama reported Ajay Devgn starrer Raid 2 completed its final schedule in New Delhi. Interestingly, Raid 2 went on floors early this year, on January 6, 2024. The source continued, “The makers had meticulously planned the shoot. Everything went as per the plan and in less than four months, the shooting will conclude.” Besides Delhi and Lucknow, Raid 2 was also filmed in Mumbai and Rajasthan.

However, Hindustan Times reports that Ajay Devgn starrer also opted a similar module to cut down on the costs. “They shot in the city for four days, including India Gate, and then 47 days in Lucknow. Atleast 20-25 films in today’s time are being shot in Lucknow because of the subsidies and quick permissions,” a person from the production said.

Both Raid and Raid 2 are directed by Raj Kumar Gupta. It is all set to release in cinemas on November 15 this year. Raid 2 is produced by Bhushan Kumar, Kumar Mangat Pathak, Abhishek Pathak and Krishan Kumar. The film is presented by Gulshan Kumar and T-Series and is a Panorama Studios production. In a conversation with Imtiaz Ali, Mohit Chauhan, and Irshad Kamil for Netflix, Rahman spoke about his unconventional path to musical mastery.

Despite not attending college, Rahman's passion for music blossomed at a young age. “I had a lot of questions,” he recalled. “When I was 12, I was vibing with people in their 40s and 50s.” This curiosity, fueled by a touch of youthful boredom, led him on a journey of exploration, immersing himself in a vast array of musical styles. “That side was spectacular for me,” he said. “There was so much out there.”

Rahman's dedication wasn't without its challenges. When he decided to establish his own studio, financial constraints loomed large. He shared a particular memory, “When I built my studio, I didn't have money to buy an amplifier or equalizer.” The room itself was a simple set-up, with just an air conditioner, a shelf, and carpeting. “I used to be sitting there not having money to buy anything,” he described.

The turning point came thanks to a selfless act. “My first recorder came after my mom gave her jewels to be pledged,” Rahman revealed. This sacrifice empowered him, as he explained, “That is when I felt empowered. I could see my future that one moment I changed.”

Amar Singh Chamkila was released on the streaming platform on April 12 and has become one of the beloved projects for all the people associated with it.
