"Amitabh Bachchan could have stopped it”: Salim Khan speaks about his split with Javed Akhtar

Weeks after the release of Angry Young Men, Salim Khan shared his thoughts on their separation and hinted that Amitabh Bachchan might have played a role in preventing it. In an interaction with NDTV, Salim Khan recalled the moment when Javed Akhtar expressed his desire to work independently. While Salim Khan accepted the decision without resistance, he admitted that he still doesn't fully understand why the split happened.

"When he informed me that he wanted to work separately, I said okay, no problem. You can't force someone to stay. Even now, I don't know why we separated. It just happened," Salim Khan stated. Despite their separation, Salim Khan stated that their friendship remained intact. "We didn’t talk behind each other’s backs. We used to meet, talk, and I would pass by his house every day. The friendship is still there," he said. Could Amitabh Bachchan Have Prevented the Split? When asked if the end of their partnership affected Amitabh Bachchan, Salim Khan responded affirmatively. The duo had written some of Bachchan’s most iconic roles, and their split undoubtedly had an impact on him. Salim Khan then went on to say that if he were in Amitabh Bachchan's position, he might have acted as a mediator to prevent the break.

"If I were in Amitabh Bachchan's place, I would have told Javed, ‘Don’t leave, you have a great partnership, everything is going well, why would you want to end this?’ If it were me, I would have done that," he explained.

Salim Khan also shared that while he often meets Amitabh Bachchan, they do not discuss this topic. "We still talk and even meet. We don’t speak harshly. We don’t get too close to anyone," he mentioned.

Even though Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar parted ways professionally, their collaboration continues to be celebrated. Both attended the special screening of Sholay in Mumbai recently to mark the 49th anniversary of the film.
