Bengal Government to ban The Kerala Story; CM Mamata Banerjee claims that the film ‘humiliates one section of people’
After certain theatre owners in Southern parts of India raised their voice and stopped the screening of The Kerala Story, the Chief Minister of West Bengal has decided to speak against the film. Mamata Banerjee has not only called for a ban on the Adah Sharma starrer but she has also accused BJP of featuring ‘distorted stories’. Furthermore, the CM has called out the film for ‘humiliating a certain section of people’.
Mamata Banerjee spoke up about The Kerala Story at the Nabanna state secretariat and compared the film to Vivek Agnihotri’s The Kashmir Files as she said, “Why (make) ‘The Kashmir Files’? to humiliate one section (of people). What’s this Kerala Story? I am not supporting the CPI-M party, they are working with the BJP. I am talking about the people of Kerala. Instead of me, it was their duty to criticize the movie. I am sorry to say this but I will tell the Kerala CM that it's sad that your party is working with the BJP and it is the BJP which is showing these distorted stories,”
In a statement released from the State Information and Cultural Affairs Department, it has been confirmed that the Chief Minister is looking to ban the film in West Bengal. It has been reasoned in the statement that the film ‘promotes false narratives to defame particular communities’. It also states that the visuals depicted in the film could threaten the law and the order of the state which has pushed them to take this step to maintain the peace and harmony amongst their citizens.
The Kerala Story, directed by Sudipto Sen, features stories about three women, who belong to a different religion, but are manipulated to convert to Islam and forced to join ISIS. The film released in India on May 5, and later, it is releasing on May 12 in Malayalam.
