Kangana Ranaut slams Oscars for picking “Anti-India” films: “It always has to be a film that makes the country look like a sh*thole”

Actress Kangana Ranaut recently criticized The Academy Awards for selecting films, that she claims, portray India in a negative light. Her comments came after Laapataa Ladies failed to make it to the shortlist for the Oscars. Speaking to Times Now, Kangana stated, “Usually, the agenda they push for India is very different. Jo Oscar pick karta hai is anti-India.” She argued that films chosen by The Academy often show India as a "sh*thole," which she believes is a deliberate narrative choice.

Kangana’s Perspective on Indian Films at the Oscars The Queen actress expressed disappointment over the perceived biases in Oscar selections. She shared her excitement about a recent Indian film garnering global attention but criticized its portrayal of religious intolerance in India. “I heard the director say that in India, you don’t have the freedom to love because of religious intolerance,” she remarked, adding that such narratives are often favored by Western award bodies.

Referencing past selections like Slumdog Millionaire, the actress-turned-politician opined that The Academy prioritizes films that highlight poverty or societal issues over those celebrating India’s progress. “For the Oscars, it has to be a film that makes the country look bad. Slumdog Millionaire, etc. It always has to be a film that makes the country look like a sh*thole,” she added. Kangana on Her Upcoming Film The 38-year-old actress actress also discussed her upcoming project, Emergency, which she says will not cater to anti-India sentiments. “The West is ready to see how India stands today. I have never cared about these awards. I don’t care about Indian awards or Western awards,” she stated.

Set to release on January 17, Emergency marks Kangana’s directorial debut and features her in the role of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The star-studded cast includes Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Milind Soman, Mahima Chaudhry, and the late Satish Kaushik.
