The veteran actor Pankaj Kapur spoke exclusively to Bollywood Hungama about his film Binny And Family and why he gave his instant nod to this family entertainer. He also spoke about his son Shahid Kapoor and his directorial venture, Mausam (2011).

You are simultaneously promoting your Netflix show IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack as well as Binny And Family. How do you feel and do you enjoy the experience? To be honest, I don’t greatly enjoy it. But I accept it as a part of my job. It’s not like we were not doing promotions for projects earlier. But then, it was very minimal. It wasn’t at such a large scale. A lot of your energy and time now gets consumed by promotions and understandably so. From the youngsters, I understand that there are so many channels and portals. Everybody has their own favourites and it’s important to reach out to all is what I have been told and that this is an essential part of film promotions. I have accepted it with a pinch of salt. If times are changing, you have to adapt yourself.

Anubhav Sinha, the director of IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, said that you have a habit of declining a project as soon as you are given an offer. Did you do the same for Binny And Family as well? (Smiles) No. I accept or decline a project only after going through the script. I loved the story and concept the moment I read it. It’s been ages since anyone has made a film on this topic. With changing times and technology coming head-on, people are becoming less attentive towards family values. I felt this film was important as it talks about the values of togetherness and communicating with each other which will last a lifetime.

When I read the script the first time, the major emphasis was on the grandfather and the granddaughter. This was 4-5 years ago and later, director Ssanjay Tripaathy came to me with the changed script. The concept was the same, which I always liked. I immediately came on board and told the director that I had given my nod the day he narrated the script to me.

How was it working with a newcomer, Anjini Dhawan? Was it overwhelming for her to work with such veteran actors? She comes from a film family and she was aware of what films are and what filmmaking is. It’s not as if it’s completely new for her. She was very confident from day 1. She knew a lot more than most youngsters of her age would. Hence, it wasn’t uncomfortable for her and I gathered that the moment I met her.

As you just said, such films are rarely made. Why is it so, especially when there’s an audience and market for such films? Beta, iska jawab dete dete meri umar ho gayi hai! It’s not like earlier people used to not make films in this genre. Hrisha da (Hrishikesh Mukherjee) and Basu Chatterjee made many slice-of-life films with a focus on family values. Some of them were extremely successful as well. Hence, there’s no reason why (we stopped making such movies). I guess it’s all about perception. Directors and producers assume that such a subject is apt for a direct release on OTT. They don’t realize that if such films are released in cinemas and if they succeed, the impact would be something else. Jo himmat karte hai, woh aisi film bana dete hai. Those who chicken out end up making films which they think would work though they know deep down that a film like this will have acceptance among the audience. They should learn good storytelling. If you have a good story and know how to tell it, the product will reach the audience, especially when you are aided by the marketing teams, who have become quite sharp in today’s times. I just wish that all kinds of cinema were made. This film brings a nice welcome change and we are hoping that the audience will enjoy it in cinemas with their family.

What do you do on the day of your film’s release? Do you check for reviews or its box office collections? Not at all. I leave it to the film’s team simply because it’s not in my hands. My job is only as long as the camera is switched on. Then, it’s for the other people (to take over). These people are not concerned when I am acting on the sets. Similarly, once the film is getting released, it’s their headache that it reaches out to the people. Obviously, it’s a matter of pleasure for the actor to know that his film is drawing an audience. But since these things are not in your control, you can only fret, in case it’s not doing well, or feel happy if it gets accepted.

You play a grandfather in Binny And Family. In real life, too, you are a grandpa. Are there any qualities similar in you and the character in this film? It’s difficult to relate because the character is different from what you are. But some general qualities like adoring your grandchildren, trying to create a bond with them etc. come quite naturally. I won’t say that my personal life as a grandfather is exactly like the one shown in the film.

How is Shahid Kapoor as a father? I think he’s great. He really adores his children. He even adjusts his schedules for them. If he’s shooting in Mumbai, he spends time with them on a daily basis. It’s a wonderful way of bonding with him.

You directed Shahid Kapoor in Mausam. The film didn’t work though it had its share of plusses. Would you like to direct again? I still love the work that I did though I have a lot to learn from the experience. If there’s an opportunity, I’d do it. I have scripts with me but I can’t be struggling and going from one producer’s office to another. This might be an exaggerated view in my head. And I guess I am also a bit lazy (smiles). All my life, I have been used to scripts coming to me and having the freedom to select. Having said that, if there’s an opportunity, I’d love to direct as I love direction.

One of the greatest films in your filmography, Ek Ruka Hua Faisla (1986), is all set to get its remake. Your thoughts? If a film is remade and turns out to be better than the original, that’s wonderful. A good subject is a good subject. Period. Shakespeare wrote plays 500 years ago and even today, people are adapting them. The audience also comes to see it as they are curious to see what the inspiration is this time from a particular actor or director. Having said that, if you have a child at your home and you tell the same story to him again and again, he’ll ask, ‘Can you tell me some other story?’. Similarly, one needs to be aware of the repeat value of the subject. Also, we always have had great writers in our country. Why not read some literature or write stories about people and the society of today? Why not make a contemporary film with fresh thoughts so that they lap it up? The audience will be happy to see it.

Weeks after the release of Angry Young Men, Salim Khan shared his thoughts on their separation and hinted that Amitabh Bachchan might have played a role in preventing it. In an interaction with NDTV, Salim Khan recalled the moment when Javed Akhtar expressed his desire to work independently. While Salim Khan accepted the decision without resistance, he admitted that he still doesn't fully understand why the split happened.

"When he informed me that he wanted to work separately, I said okay, no problem. You can't force someone to stay. Even now, I don't know why we separated. It just happened," Salim Khan stated. Despite their separation, Salim Khan stated that their friendship remained intact. "We didn’t talk behind each other’s backs. We used to meet, talk, and I would pass by his house every day. The friendship is still there," he said. Could Amitabh Bachchan Have Prevented the Split? When asked if the end of their partnership affected Amitabh Bachchan, Salim Khan responded affirmatively. The duo had written some of Bachchan’s most iconic roles, and their split undoubtedly had an impact on him. Salim Khan then went on to say that if he were in Amitabh Bachchan's position, he might have acted as a mediator to prevent the break.

"If I were in Amitabh Bachchan's place, I would have told Javed, ‘Don’t leave, you have a great partnership, everything is going well, why would you want to end this?’ If it were me, I would have done that," he explained.

Salim Khan also shared that while he often meets Amitabh Bachchan, they do not discuss this topic. "We still talk and even meet. We don’t speak harshly. We don’t get too close to anyone," he mentioned.

Even though Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar parted ways professionally, their collaboration continues to be celebrated. Both attended the special screening of Sholay in Mumbai recently to mark the 49th anniversary of the film.

Vikrant Massey is on a roll. He delivered the sleeper hit of 2023, 12th Fail. On February 7 this year, he and Sheetal Thakur welcomed a baby boy, Vardaan. On September 2, he and director Aditya Nimbalkar showed two intriguing scenes from their upcoming film, Sector 36 to select members of the media. This was followed by a discussion on the film’s content and a lot more. At this point, Vikrant opened up about turning father.

Vikrant Massey said, “When I shot for the film, my son wasn’t born. And I saw the film just 1 ½ months ago. The film now has a different impact because of my son Vardaan. We are professional enough to keep our work and personal life separate. And every year, I work on a film which messes up my emotional and mental health! And now, the process is to stay away from such films.”

He added, “Nowadays, thanks to my son, I am watching a lot of cartoons. Cartoons dekhne ka bhi nazariya badal gaya hai. This is because you realize that even cartoon shows have a subtext. I guess once we evolve, we see things from a different lens.”

He continued, “My takeaway as a father and as an honorary responsible citizen of the world is that whatever I do, I do that to provide a safe environment for my family and loved ones. The crimes going around us – they are going on for so long. And where is the end? Even the President of India Droupadi Murmu spoke along the same lines.”

Vikrant then stated, “My wife asked this question to me last night, ‘Do you think there are certain things that you’ll not do now?’. That question keeps lingering in my mind. I don’t have an answer to it.”

He also made it clear, “Having said that, I am a true-blue storyteller. I don’t want to restrict myself. Yeh meri zimmedari hai ki ghar jaa ke main apne bacche ko kya jawab dunga. Maybe it’ll be after Sector 36 or for any film I do that would cause discomfort. I’ll find a way. But I don’t want to restrict myself as a creative person ki ab mera ek beta hai, toh main yeh nahin karunga. Tomorrow, if I am offered a show like Made In Heaven, which talks about a specific community, I’ll go out there, talk about it and not think twice.

Sector 36 releases on Netflix on September 13.

In a new development, the realm of artificial intelligence has witnessed a convergence with celebrity rights. Time magazine's recent list of the 100 most influential figures in AI underscores this intersection, featuring Indian actor Anil Kapoor and Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson among the notable names.

As per the magazine, Anil Kapoor's inclusion is because of his role in safeguarding celebrity rights in the digital age. Last year, the Delhi High Court issued a landmark ruling in his favor, restraining the unauthorized use of his name, image, voice, and signature catchphrase for commercial gain. The court's decision marked a significant victory for celebrities seeking to protect their intellectual property in an era where deepfakes and AI-generated content have blurred the lines between reality and fiction.

Anil Kapoor's legal battle highlighted the pervasive misuse of celebrity personas in the online world. Unauthorized merchandise sales, false endorsements, and the creation of derogatory deepfakes were just a few examples of the exploitation he faced. The court recognized that while freedom of speech is a fundamental right, it cannot be used to infringe upon the rights of individuals, including their right to privacy and reputation.

TIME's new cover: The 100 most influential people in AI https://t.co/P81KOzsSlC pic.twitter.com/mjUT1UUx26 — TIME (@TIME) September 5, 2024

Scarlett Johansson's experience further emphasizes the ethical implications of AI in the entertainment industry. In a statement last year, she revealed that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had approached her to lend her voice to the company's AI system. While Altman believed that her voice would provide comfort to users, Johansson declined the offer. Her decision underscored the importance of consent and agency in the development and deployment of AI technologies that can have far-reaching consequences for individuals.

The inclusion of Kapoor and Johansson on Time magazine's list of influential figures in AI is a clear indication that the intersection between celebrity rights and artificial intelligence is a topic of growing importance. As AI continues to advance and its applications become more widespread, it is essential to establish clear guidelines and regulations to protect the rights of individuals and prevent the misuse of their identities. The biopic Chhaava, an exploration of the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj played by Vicky Kaushal on the big screen, is a testament to the meticulous research and attention to detail that can elevate a historical drama. Director Laxman Utekar, driven by a commitment to authentic representation, embarked on a year-long journey to immerse himself and his team in the world of the 17th-century Maratha king.

As per a report in Mid-day, central to this endeavour was an extensive exploration of Maharashtra's historical towns and cities. Utekar and costume designer Sheetal Sharma ventured to Aurangabad, Ratnagiri, Pune, Nashik, Paithan, and beyond, delving into the cultural nuances and visual aesthetics of the era. Their quest for authenticity extended beyond the books and scholarly texts, as they sought firsthand insights from the very places where history unfolded. A source elaborated, “Some filmmakers love playing with whites and pastels that are far removed from the world they are depicting, but Laxman wanted to be authentic in his storytelling. When the team began their research by visiting Maratha towns, they found out that Indians are not about pastels, but about a blast of colours. Laxman and Sheetal visited several forts and museums in these cities and towns that further gave them an insight into the dressing and culture of that era. They also met historians, who studied that period.”

Rashmika Mandanna, who plays Sambhaji's wife Yesubai, wears stunning Paithani sarees that were sourced from local weavers. The team even purchased and restored old sarees with 500-year-old borders to ensure that the costumes were as authentic as possible. “For Rashmika’s look, the costume design team went to Paithan and Narayanpeth from where authentic Paithani and Narayanpeth sarees were sourced. Considering many fabrics used in that period were no longer available, they scoured museums and took pictures of the fabrics and textiles, which were then replicated by weavers. Some old sarees, including a few pieces that had 500-year-old borders, were also bought and restored. Rashmika has worn many Paithani sarees with Chandrakala designs,” the source said.

The team's dedication to detail extended to every aspect of the production. The look of the leading man, Vicky Kaushal, was carefully crafted to reflect the historical depictions of Sambhaji Maharaj. By studying statues and busts from various locations, the team was able to capture the king's distinctive features and mannerisms. The iconic throne scene in the film's teaser was inspired by a historical bust from Pune, while the accessories worn by the characters were sourced from local markets and museums. The costume design team meticulously researched and recreated the intricate jewellery and adornments of the era, ensuring that every detail was historically accurate. “The last image in Chhaava’s teaser, of Vicky sitting on the throne, has been designed based on a bust in Pune. The accessories have been sourced from Kolhapur, Sawantwadi and Ratnagiri. The jewellery as well as accessories had to have an old-world charm. So, Rashmika has worn the Lakshmi haar with a nath—a look that was replicated from images and artefacts found in museums. Sambhaji’s sword Bhavani was recreated from a museum in London, by production designers Subrata Chakraborty and Amit Ray,” the source added.

Chhaava, adapted from a Marathi novel written by Shivaji Sawant, sees Akshaye Khanna play the role of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and Divya Dutta steps into the role of Vicky Kaushal’s stepmother Soyarabai. The film is scheduled for a December 2024 release. ALSO READ: Vicky Kaushal seeks blessings at Siddhivinayak temple after the teaser release of Chhaava

On a recent Wednesday evening, the actor was spotted by paparazzi as he arrived at Mumbai’s international airport. Kangana Ranaut’s film Emergency, which was set to release this week, has encountered a significant hurdle after the Bombay High Court declined to intervene in the certification process. The court's decision comes in light of a prior directive from the Madhya Pradesh High Court, which had already instructed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to carefully examine objections raised against the film before approving it.

After Bombay High Court's order, Kangana Ranaut took to X, formerly Twitter, to react saying, “Today I have become everyone’s favourite target, this is the price you pay for awakening this sleeping nation, they don’t know what I am talking about they have no clue why I am so concerned, because they want peace, they don’t want to take sides.”

“High court has blasted censor for illegally withholding the certificate of #emergency,” the actor added.

Today I have become everyone’s favourite target, this is the price you pay for awakening this sleeping nation, they don’t know what I am talking about they have no clue why I am so concerned, because they want peace, they don’t want to take sides. They are cool, you know… — Kangana Ranaut (@KanganaTeam) September 4, 2024

As per NDTV, a bench comprising Justices BP Colabawalla and Firdosh Pooniwalla highlighted that issuing orders would conflict with the Madhya Pradesh High Court’s instructions. The bench observed, “Judicial propriety prevents us from passing any orders today, as it would contradict the standing directive from another high court.” The panel further remarked that instructing the CBFC to act otherwise would put them in breach of the existing legal framework.

The Bombay High Court, however, emphasized that the CBFC should consider the raised objections carefully and reach a decision by September 18. The court’s statement alluded to a broader context behind the delay, stating, "We are aware that there are other factors at play. However, we shall refrain from making further comments." The next hearing is slated for the day after the certification deadline, leaving the film's release uncertain.

This judicial impasse follows a petition submitted by Zee Studios involved in the production of Emergency. The production house has urged the court to facilitate the release of the film, alleging that the CBFC has been unnecessarily delaying the issuance of the certification. The petition claims that the certification was already prepared but has yet to be formally issued. Legal representatives for the producers accused the board of acting arbitrarily, suggesting that external pressures may be influencing the process.

Adding to the controversy, earlier this week, a separate legal petition was filed in the Madhya Pradesh High Court by certain religious organizations. These groups expressed concerns over specific scenes in the film, which they argue could potentially misrepresent their community or historical events, sparking unrest. The court responded to these concerns by directing the CBFC to give due consideration to these objections before any formal certification is granted.

The drama, based on a pivotal era in Indian history, was originally scheduled for a September 6th release. However, the objections raised, have pushed the release date into limbo. Several Sikh communities have accused the film of not only distorting historical facts but also presenting certain groups in a negative light, thereby inciting communal tensions.

The film's focus on a highly controversial period in Indian history, particularly the national emergency declared in the 1970s, was expected to stir debate. On August 21, the Maharashtra State Film Awards were held in Mumbai. Veteran singer Sudesh Bhosale was one of the awardees and before the event, he spoke exclusively with Bollywood Hungama about this honour, his journey and a lot more. The interview was memorable as the singer flawlessly imitated Amitabh Bachchan and even Lata Mangeshkar.

How does it feel to win the Maharashtra State Film Award? In any profession, if one gets appreciation and an award, that too from the government, it’s naturally a huge thing. For an artist, it’s a big motivation and inspires him/her to work harder. I was sitting in my studio when I got a call, informing me of the award. I was elated as soon as I heard about it. I also missed my parents; they would have been happier than me. I learned a lot from Kishore da (Kishore Kumar), Lata ji (Lata Mangeshkar), Asha ji (Asha Bhosle), Bachchan saab (Amitabh Bachchan), etc. in the 80s. Thanks to their blessings, I did innumerable music shows. I remembered them and my other gurus when I won the award. I also hope to meet the jury members who selected me. Unko haath jod ke dhanyawaad karunga!

Do you recall past instances of winning awards and how you reacted then? Firstly, I haven’t got many awards. Bahut kam awards mile hai (laughs). A recognition I remember was winning the Kishore Kumar Award in Indore. I was also awarded with the Mother Teresa Millennium Award in Kolkata. I was even given a Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Such instances, however, are few and far between.

However, I got a lot of love and blessings from Kishore da. Lata ji once said, ‘Bhosale mere saath hota hai toh mujhe kisi male singer ki zaroorat nahin padti’. This was like winning an award (smiles). Asha ji has also spoken highly of me. Once I sang Sachin da’s (S D Burman) song ‘Sun Mere Bandhu Re’. Mehmood saab was seated among the audience. He came backstage, touched my cheeks and said, ‘Beta, jab tune Sachin da ka suur lagaya, main tera chehra dekh raha tha. Tera upar waale ke saath connection ho gaya hai’. These are legends and their praises were akin to awards.

Nevertheless, whenever I have won awards, I have always felt good and humble.

You have posted a lot of images and videos of you performing, on your Instagram handle. Do you love performing live as it gives you instant audience feedback? I have been performing on stage for 45 years. I have lost count of how many shows I have done. I was counting until I did 2000-3000 shows but then I stopped. There was a time in the 80s when there was only radio, plays and cinema for entertainment. Orchestras filled the gap and provided mass entertainment to people. This is when I entered the music arena. I worked with Kishore da for his stage shows for 5 years from 1982 to 1987. I was the anchor and used to also sing Rafi saab’s songs. Later, I graduated to sing songs with Kishore da.

If you meet me personally, you’ll say I am a very boring man! But when you see me on stage, you’ll never imagine that yeh shaant, chup chaap baithne waala aadmi aisa bhi ho sakta hai. People love me in that avatar and I am also happy when I am on stage. My wife and my children scold me. They say, ‘Kitna naachoge?’! I tell them, ‘I’ll leave everything lekin mera stage shows bandh mat karo’. I also sing in different voices. In the circus, you’ll be entertained seeing the lion, cheetah, bear, etc. But when the joker enters, people say ‘Haan, ab kuch hoga’! Similarly, my show attendees also remark, ‘Sudesh Bhosale aa gaya. Ab mazaa aane waala hai’! I entertain people and I love it. And as you rightly said, you get an instant reaction.

Your bond with Amitabh Bachchan is legendary… After singing ‘Jhumma Chumma’, Amit ji used to ask me to accompany him on his shows. A lot of old videos are available. The moment the song is played, he’ll ask me to mouth the dialogue from the film. He would be singing and I’d also be singing at the same time in his voice, creating a ‘double track’ effect. I would say ‘Main aur meri tanhaayi aksar yeh baatein karte hai’ (says it in flawless Amitabh Bachchan style), the crowd of 25,000 would go berserk! Lata ji, who would be present, would say ‘Waah, kya baat hai’ (says in Lata ji’s voice).

There’s another incident when I sang 'Doli Mein Bithai Ke', a song from Amar Prem (1972). I realized that Asha ji had covered her face with her hands. When the song was over, she kept her hands down. I saw she was in tears. She told me, ‘Aisa laga ki Sachin da mere paas khade hai’.

These moments hold a special place in my heart. Whenever I am feeling low, I remember them. I listen to their songs throughout the day.

You also did shows with Amitabh Bachchan. You recently posted about it… Woh kaafi acchi yaadein hai. After Jhumma Chumma, he went on to do many world tours. Anil Kapoor saab, Sridevi ji, Anupam Kher ji, etc. were also a part of it. He also sings well and his songs are a hit. Yet, he makes me sing the songs. People die to see Amitabh Bachchan and that man knows Sudesh Bhosale. Nothing can be bigger than that! Whenever I message him, he replies to me within 24 hours. Aur kya chahiye? Yeh bhi toh award hai na (smiles)?

You haven’t sung for Amitabh Bachchan in a long time. Can we expect a collaboration in future? Yes, why not? I, in fact, dub for him for his ad films. He’ll be shooting for a brand in September. He’ll dub for it himself in Hindi. I’ll dub for him in various languages like Odia, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, etc. When he finds out that I’ll be dubbing for him, he would say ‘Sudesh kar raha hai toh theek hai’. He knows that I have never misused his voice.

Amitabh Bachchan went to court and got an order restraining anyone from using his voice without authorization… Yes, that’s because somebody dubbed in his voice while promoting an alcohol or tobacco product. And Bachchan saab was justified in doing so. Gullible people might assume that he has endorsed the product.

It was a surprise to hear your voice in a song in Shamshera (2022). Why do you sing so few songs? Earlier, actors would debut when they were in their early 30s. Now, the heroes are 15 when they debut. And my voice won’t suit them. And the thought is that if an actor is young, the singer should also be of his age. Anyway, main agar Hrithik Roshan ke liye gaau, toh bada ajeeb lagega na?

Also, there’s a difference in singing and playback singing. I could modulate as per the requirement. The way I sang ‘Jumma Chumma’, ‘Say Shava Shava’ ‘Sona ‘Sona’ or ‘Meri Makhna Meri Soniye’ were all different from each other. I can sing for characters and I continue singing. I have a studio in Goregaon. I also sang ‘Mard Maratha’ from Bajirao Mastani (2015). 2 days ago, I sang for an upcoming Rajpal Yadav film.

I also did dubbing at a time when people didn’t know about it. I dubbed for Sanjeev Kumar in 5 films after he passed away. A lot of people don’t know that I dubbed for Anil Kapoor as well in some scenes in Tezaab (1988).

On August 14, Bollywood Hungama was the first one to report that the Akshay Kumar-starrer Sky Force won’t be able to make it on October 2 in theatres, as scheduled. As expected, the news became a talking point, and many wondered what the new release date of the film would be – will it be released later this year, or would the release be pushed to next year?

Bollywood Hungama has learned that the makers have locked a release date for Sky Force. A source told us, “Sky Force would arrive in cinemas on January 24, 2025. It’ll be a Republic Day release and is the right time to be presented to the viewers as it’s a patriotic entertainer. An official announcement will happen soon.”

There were murmurs that Sky Force’s promo would be attached to the Independence Day release, Stree 2. This is because Stree 2, like Sky Force, is also a Jio Studios and Maddock Films production. But after the decision to postpone the Akshay Kumar-starrer was taken, the idea to showcase the teaser was dropped.

This also means that there won't be any more Akshay Kumar releases in 2024. He has had three releases this year – Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Sarfira and Khel Khel Mein. Khel Khel Mein incidentally clashed with Stree 2 on August 15. Akshay also had a hilarious cameo in Stree 2.

Sky Force would be Akshay Kumar’s sixth release in the Republic Day week. His first film Saugandh (1991) released on January 25. The week has been lucky for him as all his previous Republic Day releases like Elaan (1994), Khakee (2004), Baby (2015) and Airlift (2016) were successes at the box office. It now remains to be seen if Sky Force also follows suit.

Besides Akshay Kumar, Sky Force also stars Sara Ali Khan, Veer Pahariya and Nimrat Kaur. The period aerial action thriller is backed by Dinesh Vijan of Maddock Films and Jyoti Deshpande of Jio Studios and is directed by Sandeep Kewlani and Abhishek Kapur.

A highly anticipated action drama Mitti starring Sidharth Malhotra has been put on hold indefinitely. In June of this year, reports emerged that Malhotra was teaming up with producer Murad Khetani and director Balwinder Singh Janjua for a gritty action film. South Indian actress Sreeleela was also cast in the film. However, recent developments suggest that Malhotra abruptly exited the film just weeks before production was scheduled to begin.

As per a report in Peeping Moon, the reasons for his departure remain unclear, citing both creative differences with the director and concerns about the script itself. While some sources suggest Malhotra simply wasn't convinced by the project's direction, others claim his decision may have been influenced by a desire for more creative control on set. There's also speculation that the actor's recent box office struggles may have played a role, potentially making it difficult to secure funding for the film.

Earlier, director Balwinder Singh Janjua had earlier spoken to Bollywood Hungama to offer details about the project's themes. He described it as an "action drama set in Uttarakhand," a story that revolves around "guilt, living with the baggage of guilt." He further elaborated that the film would explore themes of "saving your home and your land, your heritage," emphasizing the importance of family and relationships. Rumors are rife that Malhotra might be attached to an upcoming romantic comedy produced by Dinesh Vijan and directed by Dasvi filmmaker Tushar Jalota. This project, initially slated to begin filming in late 2023, was reportedly delayed due to budgetary concerns. Now, with Malhotra potentially on board, the film appears to be back on track, with filming potentially commencing in the coming months. The yet-untitled film is expected to be a light-hearted and commercially viable project, a stark contrast to the action drama Malhotra recently departed. While the casting of the female lead hasn't been officially confirmed, reports suggest that Janhvi Kapoor is in talks for the role. Meanwhile, Sidharth Malhotra is also in talks with the makers of Race 4 to join Saif Ali Khan in the new installment. In a recent appearance on the podcast Jaane Mann, renowned filmmaker Karan Johar shared his thoughts on power and peace, attributing these qualities to iconic figures in his life. When asked to relate the words “peace” and “power” to individuals he admires, Johar highlighted megastar Amitabh Bachchan and the late spiritual leader Dada Vaswani.

Amitabh Bachchan: A Symbol of Power KJo described Amitabh Bachchan as the epitome of power, emphasizing the legendary actor's commanding presence. Johar elaborated, "Amitabh Bachchan, I think he has the power of his being when he enters a room. I feel he has that power that most people will stand up, and they don’t know why they are standing up. He exudes an aura that is beyond your understanding of what an energy or power is. That is true power. Magnetism." Dada Vaswani: The Embodiment of Peace When the conversation shifted to peace, Karan Johar spoke of the late Dada Vaswani, a revered spiritual leader. Johar recalled a profound encounter with Vaswani during an event attended by 50,000 people, where he felt an unparalleled sense of tranquility. “I’ve never felt more at peace than I was with him... I had never really been moved by people in the spiritual world. But I was very moved by his presence, and I felt at peace," Johar remarked.

In addition to discussing power and peace, Karan Johar reflected on his personal journey, both as a filmmaker and an individual. Speaking candidly about his experiences, he expressed pride in the path he has chosen, despite the challenges. "I was never like the other boys—their interests, their style, their sports—it just wasn’t me. It took me years to understand that I don’t owe anyone an apology for being different. I’ve embraced who I am, and that’s become my power,” Johar shared.

This self-acceptance has been a cornerstone of Johar's success, allowing him to live authentically and without regret. "To this day, I have never regretted the way I’ve lived or the work I’ve pursued. Everything I do is for me, unapologetically. I just want to live my truth," he concluded.

Kangana Ranaut, actor and newly elected Member of Parliament, recently addressed the mounting concerns surrounding her latest film Emergency. Ranaut, who portrays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the film, revealed that the project faces significant obstacles with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

In a video message shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, Ranaut clarified the situation, stating, “There are rumours that our film Emergency has got a censor certificate. It is not true. In fact, our film was cleared earlier but its certification has been stopped because of several threats.”

#Emergency pic.twitter.com/Klko20kkqY — Kangana Ranaut (@KanganaTeam) August 30, 2024

Ranaut further disclosed that both she and members of the CBFC have been receiving threats related to the film's content. According to the actor, pressure is being exerted on the board to censor specific parts of the film, particularly scenes depicting Indira Gandhi’s assassination, the involvement of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, and the Punjab riots. “People of the censor board are also getting a lot of threats. There is pressure on us not to show the assassination of Mrs. Gandhi, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, and the Punjab riots. I don’t know what we will show then, that there is a blackout in the film. This is an unbelievable time for me and I am very sorry for this state of things in this country,” she lamented.

The film, which was initially scheduled for release on September 6, now faces an uncertain future. Earlier, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) issued a legal notice to the CBFC, demanding a halt to the film’s release. The notice argues that the film could potentially incite communal tensions and spread misinformation, particularly concerning the portrayal of the Sikh community.

As reported by NDTV, the legal notice sent on August 27 argues that the film’s depictions are not only misleading but also harmful to the social cohesion of Punjab and the broader national community. “Such depictions are not only misleading but also deeply offensive and damaging to the social fabric of Punjab and the entire nation. It is apparent that Ranaut has chosen the subject of the Emergency not to make a genuine political or historical statement against Congress, but rather to target the Sikh community,” the notice stated. The SAD claims that the movie portrays the Sikh community in an unjust and negative light, which could have serious repercussions.

The controversy surrounding Emergency has escalated in recent days, with Ranaut also reaching out to the police for assistance. A recent development has brought Kangana Ranaut's upcoming film Emergency under scrutiny, as members of the Sikh community have expressed strong objections to its content. Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has reportedly assured community leaders that the state government will explore the possibility of prohibiting the film’s release, pending legal counsel.

Earlier this week, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the apex body responsible for the management of historical Gurdwaras, issued a legal notice to the producers of the film, including Kangana Ranaut, alleging that the movie misrepresents Sikh history and contains scenes that have deeply offended the Sikh community. The SGPC's legal notice demanded the immediate removal of objectionable scenes from Emergency and called for an apology from the filmmakers to the Sikh community. The SGPC also insisted that the film's trailer, which was released on August 14, be taken down from all public and social media platforms. The release of highly anticipated films often sparks a frenzy of promotional activities. While studios and filmmakers play a pivotal role in generating buzz, the cinema chains themselves can also contribute significantly to the hype. Roongta Cinemas recently demonstrated this with a unique and unforgettable campaign to promote the horror-comedy sequel, Stree 2.

Rather than relying on traditional billboards or social media ads, Roongta Cinemas devised a more immersive and interactive strategy. They transformed their multiplex theaters into a chilling playground for the film's titular character. A woman, dressed in the iconic red saree and veil of Shraddha Kapoor's character from Stree, would make surprise appearances during screenings of the film. The campaign's success was evident in the enthusiastic response on social media. Moviegoers shared their experiences and reactions to the surprise appearances, creating a viral buzz that extended far beyond the walls of Roongta Cinemas. The campaign effectively tapped into the film's horror-comedy genre, offering a thrilling and memorable experience for audiences.

Kangana Ranaut's upcoming film, Emergency, is poised to be a significant milestone in her career. Ranaut not only stars as the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi but also takes on the role of director, following her previous experience co-directing Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi in 2019. With Emergency, Ranaut aims to present a nuanced portrayal of one of India's most complex political figures.

The Inspiration Behind Emergency As per a report by Mid-Day, when asked about her motivation to create a film on Indira Gandhi, Ranaut explains that her decision wasn’t driven by a simple fascination with the former Prime Minister’s persona. Instead, it was a result of her deep social and political awareness. Ranaut delved into extensive research, reading works like Coomi Kapoor’s The Emergency: A Personal History and Gandhi’s autobiography. One moment that struck her was Gandhi's conversation with her guru, Jiddu Krishnamurti, where she expressed her inner turmoil during the Emergency: “I feel I’m riding a beast, which I loved riding initially, but now I can’t get off it.”

Ranaut describes Gandhi's life as a Shakespearean tragedy, filled with internal and external conflicts, which further compelled her to explore these themes on screen. “Mrs. Gandhi’s life was such a beautiful Shakespearean tragedy. There is a throne, a person destined to be the queen, her opponents, and her internal battle with her conscience,” she says. Addressing the Controversy Given Ranaut’s association with the Bharatiya Janata Party, there has been speculation that her portrayal of Gandhi might be biassed. Many critics have questioned whether the film would depict Gandhi in a negative light. Ranaut responds firmly to these doubts, stating, “This film will be a tight slap on all those faces, who think I’ve projected her in a negative way! They didn’t even give my film a chance. It’s a week away, at least watch it before forming your judgement.”

Ranaut explained that the biopic aims to show Gandhi’s many facets, including her roles as a woman, a mother, and a politician. She touches on the deep pain Gandhi experienced, particularly the loss of her son, Sanjay Gandhi, which Ranaut found challenging to portray on screen. “Her life had so much pain, trauma, and drama. I was keen to make this film because people don’t know those aspects of her,” she adds. The Challenges of Directing Emergency Directing Emergency was not an easy task for Ranaut. She admits that taking on the dual role of actor and director came with significant sacrifices, both financially and creatively. “My revenue took a hit. As an actor, I can do three films in a year, but as a writer-director, I can only do one film in three years,” she explains. Ranaut also faced difficulties in selling the film due to its unconventional content and setting. “The protagonist is in her 60s, and everybody in the movie is wearing khadi kurta pyjamas, but luckily Zee Studios stepped in.”

The film is all set to release on September 6.

Stree 2 was released almost two weeks back and yet, the excitement around the film refuses to die down. Yesterday, its lead actor Rajkummar Rao posted a picture from the sets of the film. It features him in a female avatar and clad in a purple sequin skirt, a red top and a golden shrug. The actor, in the caption, mentioned that it was one of his favourite scenes from the film but sadly, it didn’t make it to the final cut. However, he didn’t give any information about what the scene was all about.

Bollywood Hungama has found out exciting details about this scene. A source from the unit said, “It involved Rajkummar cross-dressing and turning into a woman to lure the villain, Sarkata. This is because Sarkata attacked only females and hence, Vicky (Rajkummar Rao) takes this unusual and risky step.”

The source added, “Jana (Abhishek Banerjee) is also a part of this scene. He fails to recognize Vicky and mistakes him for someone else, adding to the comic quotient of the scene.” Another source said that Vicky’s heels break and it also contributes to the madness. Some comedy also happens over his wig, as per the source.

In the Instagram post, Rajkummar Rao also asked his followers, ‘Kya aap log dekhna chahte hain ye scene film mein? Aap sab batao’. Stree 2’s lead actress Shraddha Kapoor excitedly commented that this scene should be added to the final cut. Writer Niren Bhatt also commented that he wanted the film’s extended cut to be out.

It now remains to be seen if the said scene is added to the prints of Stree 2. An exhibitor told us, “This is often done by makers once their film is a hit. They might remove some scenes or a song if they feel their film is getting lengthy. After the film is accepted, the deleted portion gets added. In recent times, a song featuring Akshay Kumar and Govinda in Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty (2014) was added after a week. A sensual song of Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif in De Dana Dan (2009) too made it days after its release.”

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma’s Sarkar remains one of the iconic films from mainstream Bollywood. It was inspired from the Hollywood classic Godfather and it starred Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Kay Kay Menon, Katrina Kaif, among others. The movie completed 19 years last month on July 1.

The film is also known for a group of baddies who gang up against Subhash Nagre aka Sarkar (Amitabh Bachchan). One of them was the character of Rashid played convincingly by Zakir Hussain, who was a newcomer back then. During an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama, the actor looked back at the shoot of the film.

“It was a struggle period for me,” said Hussain. “There was a strong desire to get a good opportunity. At that time, Ram Gopal Varma’s company was the only one that was giving opportunities to newcomers. I was hopeful that I would get in somehow. Before him, there were 1-2 banners that used to give a chance to new people.”

On how he got the role, the actor said, “I had done a film called Ek Hasina Thi (2004). I had one scene in that movie. He (RGV) saw that scene and called me and had a conversation. I was selected. He then trained me for 4-5 months in his own way. There was a lot of hard-work with regards to what level of performance he wanted for that character.”

Despite getting selected for the pivotal role, the road wasn’t smooth for Hussain. He said that the film’s producers didn’t want a newcomer to play an antagonist against someone like Amitabh Bachchan. “In a way, he (RGV) fought with the producers saying that he only wants me for the role. He said that if I won’t be in the film, someone else would be but it will always be a newcomer. Producers were like, Bachchan sahab hai toh ek naya ladka kaise hoga? In a way, it was like a blind gamble, which worked,” laughed Hussain.

Varma also became like a guide for Hussain after they shot Sarkar together. The actor recalled a funny incident with RGV before the release of the film. “I asked RGV what should I do next. He said, ‘Don’t do anything. Let this film release’. After the release, I asked him the same. He said, ‘Do some work, what else?’ (laughs) He said I should do films with good director, production and role,” he said.

Hussain revealed that he kept getting villainous roles after Sarkar. The shackles were finally broken for him by filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi. “Rajkumar Santoshi sahab also gave me a villainous role but it was also comic in Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. Then people came to know that I can do comedy as well, so I started getting comic roles,” he said.

Zakir Hussain will next be seen in the ZEE5 web series Murshid alongside Kay Kay Menon and Tanuj Virwani. The show will stream from August 30 onwards.
