The Yash Raj Films’ (YRF) Spy Universe has arguably become the biggest franchise of Bollywood. It all began with Ek Tha Tiger (2012), starring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif. Its success prompted Aditya Chopra to make its sequel Tiger Zinda Hai (2017), featuring the same actors as in the first part. This was followed by War (2019), starring Hrithik Roshan, Tiger Shroff and Vaani Kapoor. Pathaan, which was released recently, also belongs to this universe. It starred Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham and was directed by War director Siddharth Anand. Interestingly, this was the first film in the universe where a crossover truly happened. Tiger, played by Salman Khan, made a rocking 15-minute appearance in the second half of Pathaan and took the madness to another level. Now, YRF is geared up to release the next film of the Spy Universe, Tiger 3. It stars Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif and Emraan Hashmi and will arrive in cinemas on Diwali 2023. This film will feature Shah Rukh Khan reprising his role of Pathaan, albeit in a special appearance. Seeing SRK and Salman together prompted fans to demand a film where both have leading roles. And soon enough, it came to light that a film titled Tiger vs Pathaan is in the offing. As per the latest development, even this biggie will be directed by Siddharth Anand. Meanwhile, a few days ago, it came to light that War 2 is also in the offing. The same day, Ayan Mukerji confirmed his association with this film as the director. The next day, news came in that South star Jr NTR, who made waves worldwide with RRR (2022), will be the second lead in the film besides Hrithik Roshan. Though Tiger vs Pathaan was announced before War 2, the latter will release first. A source told Bollywood Hungama, “All the stories are interconnected. War 2 will follow the events of Tiger 3. Tiger vs Pathaan, meanwhile, will begin from where War 2 ends.” When asked about the release plans, the source said, “War 2 is expected to go on floors this year once Siddharth Anand is done with Fighter, his Republic Day 2024 release. Hence, if all goes well, War 2 is expected to be out by 2024 end. Bollywood star Salman Khan on Wednesday was in attendance at the press conference of the 68th Filmfare Awards 2023 where he took a jibe at the young actors. The actor said that the five stars of the industry, including him, Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar and Aamir Khan, can give the young actors a run for their money. At the press conference, Salman Khan was asked who amongst the new lot of stars has impressed him. He said that all of them are hardworking, focused and talented but he and his era of contemporaries won’t be giving up so easily. He said, “We will make them run for their money. The Allu Arjun blockbuster Pushpa: The Rise – Part 1 took the box office by storm. Titled Pushpa: The Rule – Part 2, the sequel is now being written, or we shall re-written, as the screenplay for both part 1 and part 2 was completed simultaneously. But here is the update. The screenplay now being finalized by director Sukumar has been modified to include one major Bollywood A-lister, preferably one of the Khans, or Ajay Devgan, if not somebody else. The sequel would not only have far superior production values than the first film, its budget is also almost twice than what it was for the first film. There were rumours of one Bollywood actor (Arjun Kapoor) playing the villain in Pushpa 2. This was a baseless promotional idle talk. Fahadh Faasil is the archvillain in the sequel to Pushpa. But yes, one major Bollywood A-lister will join Allu Arjun in Pushpa 2. Sources say that the A-lister will be seen in an extended cameo, like Salman Khan with Chiranjeevi in the recent Telugu film Godfather. Zeenat Aman posted a beautiful message and two old photos on her Instagram account in honour of Parveen Babi's birthday. The seasoned star discussed their amazing resemblance and how, in the 1970s, they were frequently compared to one another. On Tuesday, Zeenat took to Instagram and shared two throwback pictures featuring her and Parveen Babi. Sharing the pictures, she wrote in caption, “I’d like to remember and honour Parveen today, on her birthday.” Zeenat wrote how people used to find resemblance between Parveen and her. She said, “Parveen was gorgeous, glamorous and talented. Back in the 70s, we wore our hair in a similar manner and enjoyed Western fashion. Though neither of us saw it, we were told we had an uncanny resemblance. It must have been true, because as recently as last year I was approached in Dubai as “Parveen ma’am””. Talking about their equation, she further wrote, “Naturally the media at the time spun tales of competition and rivalry between us, but in reality we were always warm towards each other. Not best friends, but contemporaries, colleagues and well-wishers. We worked together on Ashanti and Mahaan.” Zeenat also spoke about the struggle Parveen faced when she was alive. “Parveen’s struggle with mental health illness came at a time when the country was still so insensitive and ignorant on these matters. After her death, I often ruminated on how she was remembered. The tabloids focused on her romantic relationships and “episodes”, but Parveen was much more than who she dated or what she said when she was unwell. I feel she never truly got the chance to say her piece,” Zeenat added. Lauding Parveen, Zeenat wrote, “She was intelligent and hardworking and creative. The ambitious spy universe of YRF is all set to get pan India in terms of casting. As per current reports, joining the world would be none other than RRR fame Jr NTR. The star-studded cast of Citadel, an upcoming international spy drama on Amazon Video, travelled to Mumbai for the momentous Asia Pacific premiere. The action-packed series' star cast, including Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, attended the press conference of Citadel that was held at a five-star hotel in central Mumbai. The makers plan to make it into a global franchise and even have local instalments in several countries. An Indian version of the show is currently in production. It features Varun Dhawan and Samantha Ruth Prabhu and is helmed by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK, of The Family Man and Farzi fame. At the press conference of the show Citadel, Priyanka Chopra Jonas was asked whether she had any advice for her two fellow Indian spies (Varun Dhawan and Samantha Ruth Prabhu) who are a part of Citadel universe and are shooting the series currently. Priyanka responded to it saying, “I don't think I can give them any advice. They are both such accomplished actors in their own ways. There is nothing I can say.” Opening up on her interaction with Varun Dhawan, Priyanka asserted, “I met Varun recently at the NMACC event and he was telling me how the shoot is going and how exciting it is. Brahmastra – Part One: Shiva starring Ranbir Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, and Alia Bhatt released in the theatres on September 9, 2022. While the visual spectacle collected Rs. 257.44 cr in India, the film is the first installment in the Ayan Mukerji-directed trilogy. Mukerji has now announced that the film will be shot simultaneously and will release in 2026 and 2027. Like Sanjeev Kumar and Jaya Bhaduri (Bachchan) in the bygone era, nothing stops another pair of real-life friends, Ajay Devgn and Tabu, from being cast with, but not necessarily opposite, each other. The two older actors were also very fond of each other. Sanjeev and Jaya started out playing father and daughter in Parichay and went on to do hits or successes like Koshish, Anamika and Naya Din Nayi Raat as a lead pair. They then went on to be father-in-law and widowed bahu in Sholay. And after a romantic outing in Nauker, they again came together to play the traumatized spouses to a straying wife and husband respectively in Silsila. A similar unusual ethos is seen in the Ajay and Tabu trajectory. Speaking to a popular magazine recently, Ajay said, “I have known Tabu since we were 13-14 years old. Our equation is friendly to the extent that we use gaali-galoch on each other. There is a certain comfort zone. I think that equation has never changed over the years.” As Ajay is almost 54, their friendship is now about four decades old, and their mutual comfort zone shows clearly on screen. Incidentally, though Tabu had signed Prem first as the leading lady, her first film with Ajay, Vijaypath, really made her a star and the ‘Ruk Ruk Ruk’ girl. And that film went on floors 30 years ago! As the time spent together increased, their friendship got a further boost. Haqeeqat and Thakshak, which came in the next few years, however, nosedived commercially, and while Tabu went on to experiment with mid-stream, arty and even regional and international cinema, Ajay stayed the course as a mainstream hero and was paired with all the other major heroines. And so it took all of 16 years before they came together again, and began breaking new ground. The first such film was Drishyam (2015), with Tabu as a ruthless and also bereaved cop, investigating the case of her missing son, with Ajay Devgn as the family man who is suspected of murdering him. While there were several sequences of confrontation between them, the scene that stood out was the climax, wherein Ajay as good as informs the mother that her son is no more and Tabu breaks down. At that time, Tabu had told me, “I have always known him as Vishal (Ajay’s real name) and I wish I was friends with him on-screen, but this time I am not! Yet, Ajay has not changed one bit. He is the same good friend and fun-loving person, except that he has become a father! But working with him was such a relaxing experience. See, he has seen so much, is in such a strong position today, comes from a film family and has directed films—so he is never too serious, and shooting becomes like a picnic or a party. In fact, I would sometimes wonder if I was working or was on a holiday.” The 2022 super-hit sequel, Drishyam 2, however, saw the fiery cop back in action to prove Ajay’s guilt, with the latter even more determined to protect his family and himself. In-between these two movies came Fitoor (2016), in which both made cameos. Ajay played hero Aditya Roy Kapur’s godfather, and Tabu was Aditya’s ladylove Katrina Kaif’s mother in this messed-up adaptation of the classic British novel, Great Expectations. After this came Golmaal Again (2017), a bumper hit that saw Ajay in his now cult character as Gopal, one of the Golmaal gang, who was in love with a young girl, while Tabu essayed a psychic librarian! Romance again, but with a twist, marked their 2019 hit, De De Pyaar De. Ajay now played a middle-aged man who falls for a young girl and Tabu was his wife and homemaker, who finally lets him marry the girl. About this film, Tabu had told me, “For us, it was like taking off from the Vijaypath days! Both of us felt we are still in that era. He has not changed, neither have I, and he even looks the same, and I am told so do I!” Recently, Ajay quipped that Tabu was in so many films of his simply because her dates were available, but their roles too did deserve their powerhouse talents. The just-released Bholaa marks Tabu’s first experience with Ajay as producer and director. Tabu plays a feisty cop again, but Ajay essays a man just released from jail and wanting to meet his daughter, of whose existence he never knew, but is living in an orphanage. The cop emotionally blackmails him, however, into completing her own mission against a drug mafia before meeting his kid. The actress calls him an amazing director, who looked at everything from an actor’s perspective as he was himself one. “He is very clear, but also very serious and barely talks! But he is not the same man I know as an actor at all!” Their crackling chemistry will continue with their just-signed new film, billed by director Neeraj Pandey as a romantic musical thriller, Auron Mein Kahaan Dum Tha. Unwilling to reveal details about their pairing, Neeraj, however, lets on that it will be “very different”. And we expect nothing less from this peerless pair. This past weekend, it was a grand affair with celebrities from across the world under one roof for the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre’s grand launch. The two-day event saw many popular faces including Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra, Nick Jonas, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Karisma Kapoor, Kajol, Spider-Man co-stars Tom Holland and Zendaya, Penelope Cruz, Karlie Kloss, Kat Graham, Gigi Hadid among others who made it to the two-day event. On NMACC’s gala day, which was held on April 1, celebrities showed their stunning looks on the red carpet to showcase India in fashion moment. Karisma Kapoor, who wore a Rahul Mishra ensemble, took to her official Instagram account to share a slew of photos featuring Zendaya, Tom Holland and Nita Ambani. The two-day event saw the presence of international stars like Tom Holland, Zendaya, Nick Jonas, Penelope Cruz, Karlie Kloss, Gigi Hadid, and Kat Graham among others. At the NMACC’s gala event on Saturday, several celebrities including Shah Rukh Khan, Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Varun Dhawan, and Rashmika Mandanna among others performed. Interestingly, during Varun’s performance, supermodel Gigi Hadid was brought on stage. On NMACC’s gala day, which was held on April 1, celebrities showed their stunning looks on the red carpet to showcase India in fashion moment. Gigi Hadid looked resplendent in Abu Jani & Sandeep Khosla couture. The supermodel wore a saree and wowed everyone. Zayed Khan recently completed 20 years in the film industry. His thriller, Chura Liyaa Hai Tumne was released on March 21, 2003, and on this special occasion, the actor put up a dashing picture on his Instagram handle and promised his followers that his next release is around the corner. A few days after this post, which got loads of appreciation, Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to Zayed Khan. The actor looked quite dashing and seemed excited as he opened up about his comeback film, TFTNW, where, in his own words, the butt of jokes is him. The film’s idea and concept came from actor Aseem Merchant, who also produced the film. Aseem, Zayed and Mohit Srivastava and Kavin Dave have penned the script while Mohit has also directed this mockumentary film. As per reports, the film stars 15-20 prominent Bollywood personalities in cameos like Riteish Deshmukh, Farah Khan, Suzanne Khan, Jackie Shroff etc. Zayed Khan remained tightlipped about this aspect, the meaning of the title and on which digital platform it’ll premiere. However, Zayed was more than happy to share how he became a part of the film. Zayed Khan began by saying, “For the first 10 years, I gave it my all. I lived out of the suitcase as I went for shoots, events, performances, shows etc. I also had children at a really early age. I read the biography of a very famous gentleman who stated how he missed out on the growing years of his children. It just struck me that my kids are growing up and I want to spend time with them. I consciously decided to step back. That’s the worst thing to do! On one level, it was really nice as I got to experience a lot of things I wanted, as a father. I took them on holidays. I am a sportsman myself and introduced them to sports like diving. But when you completely disappear from the radar, people forget easily.” Zayed Khan continued, “When I wanted to come back into the industry, I realized that it was very hard. Of course, you have friends and people who can help you out. They are, however, not the ones who take the call. The audience is the one who makes the call. The studios represent what the audience demands. Also, things had changed a lot. People don’t have the time and patience to watch a 2 ½ hour-long film. Many will of course ask, ‘Who the hell is Zayed Khan?’.” He added, “Also, my kids had never really seen me in action, on a film set. Everytime I go out with family and friends, there’ll be people taking pictures with me. They didn’t really get why this frenzy was there around me.” It’s Zayed Khan’s children, Zidaan and Aariz Khan, who gave him the much needed push, “One day, my kids came up to me and said, ‘Why don’t you resume acting?’. I replied, ‘If that happens, I won’t get time to see you guys’. They were fine with it and insisted that they would want to see me work in movies. They helped germinate the idea.” Zayed stated, “Then, I met a lot of people and tried to produce. But the warmth that was given to me when I was a star was very different. It dawned on me that this is a star-based system. One can believe that writing is now paramount and things are streamlined. But at the end of the day, everyone wants to know who’s starring in your film or show. You can write a work as great as that of Shakespeare but nobody will give a damn if a star is not mouthing your lines.” Things, however, changed for the better for Zayed. He narrated, “One day, I was a little low. A friend, Aseem Merchant, walked in. He looked at me and asked, ‘You are such a lovely, good-looking guy. Why the hell are you not doing anything?’. It’s an easy question to ask but very difficult for me to answer! How do I tell him that I tried, went to a lot of places and irrespective of where I come from, it didn’t work out? I didn’t say that. I replied, ‘I don’t know, man. Let’s see what happens’. This is when he said that he has an idea and wants to cast me. I looked at him with dodgy eyes and asked, ‘Why do you want to do a film with me?’! Aseem simply said, ‘The best is yet to come from you’! It was nice to see somebody having some faith in me.” Zayed further said, “Aseem then narrated the idea of TFTNW. On the face of it, it sounded promising. But I was apprehensive. I mean I was already down and then I do a film where the butt of the jokes is on me. What if things get messed up at the execution level? However, I have been brought up with the attitude that ‘No risk, no reward’. I also asked, ‘What do I have to lose?’” Zayed described the writing process and said, “When I read the first script, I could see that the writers (Aseem Merchant, Mohit Srivastava and Kavin Dave) had a lot of reservations about not trying to hurt me too much! I told them to push the envelope. I was ready to be the butt of all jokes. I told them, ‘If you feel some jokes are going to hurt my sentiments, make it f*****g funny while you do so’! That’s when they cleared their feathers out and came back with another draft. From here on, the writing went to another crazy level.” Zayed is all praises for Aseem Merchant, “I’d like to make a special mention of Aseem and his daughter Sasha. They both are an incredible team. They made a blind bet by signing me. I want to also specially mention Mohit Srivastava, the director. He is very sound technically and never bogged down under pressure. The whole unit was like one big happy family. So overall, it was a great journey. I discovered so much about myself all over again.” Zayed then explains why he’s so confident about TFTNW, “We had a focus group screening. It had 100 people from the ages of 10 to 90 years old and different walks of life. My kids also attended the screening. Their response blew us! My kids watched it 7 times. They have never seen any of my films 7 times besides probably Main Hoon Na (2004)! Every time we’ll have a focus screening, they’ll ask me, ‘Papa, can we watch it again?’. I asked, ‘Do you really want to watch it or are you saying it to make me feel good?’. But they assured me that they loved the film.” Zayed Khan signed off by saying, “It was so heartening to see not just children but even teenagers, the elderly, and middle-aged people - all loving TFTNW. It’s very hard to achieve this feat. The mega star Ajay Devgn, also called ‘Mass Maharaja’ by his fans, turns 54 today. It’ll be a special birthday for him today as his much-awaited biggie, Bholaa, was released just a few days ago. Thankfully, it is doing quite well and has given him a reason for a double celebration. Interestingly, if Bholaa sustains well, it’ll be his second consecutive success after the mega-blockbuster, Drishyam 2 (2022). This will be a rare instance for an actor in the post-pandemic era, where even the biggest of films are falling like nine pins. Also, it was said that remakes won’t work in Bollywood. Ajay Devgn proved this notion wrong not once but twice as both Drishyam 2 and Bholaa have been adapted from South films. Ajay Devgn’s box office achievements are known and a lot has been written about it. This article, however, will focus on the lesser-known aspect of how he has always given back to the industry, like no other actor. Not many know that Ajay Devgn is also an exhibitor and runs a chain of cinemas called NY Cinemas. In a thoughtful gesture, this cinema chain has acquired theatres that were shut down and have refurbished them. The ticket rates in these theatres are reasonable and some of them are located in towns which had no cinema hall. It has been said time and again that India is heavily under-screened and if there are more theatres, the business can expand. In this regard, Ajay has done a great service to the industry. In a Bollywood Hungama exclusive interview after the release of Golmaal Again (2017), Ajay Devgn said, “I have started taking theatres that have been shut down in Uttar Pradesh. Till now, I already have 4 theatres running. I intend to take the number to 150 or 200. 80 theatres in UP have shut down and these are in cities which have a population of around 10 lakhs. If you add the total population of such towns, imagine the number of people who are not getting to see a film due to the lack of theatres in their towns. The locals have to travel 80 km to catch a film. They’ll do it for a film like Golmaal but why would they (take so much effort) for a film that they are not excited about or doesn’t have the cinematic experience?” Then, in 2015, Ajay Devgn established NY VFXWaala and has constantly attempted to provide top-class CGI in films. This studio has worked on films like Dilwale (2015), Bajirao Mastani (2015), Dangal (2016), Shivaay (2016), Baahubali 2 (2017), Jagga Jasoos (2017), Golmaal Again (2017), Padmaavat (2018), Simmba (2018), Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior (2020) etc. It has won a National Award for Shivaay. It has been majorly instrumental in having a setup where films can be shot in controlled environments against green screens and not in challenging outdoor locations. Saif Ali Khan, in an interview in 2020, drew an interesting parallel between acting in Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior and Laal Kaptaan (2019), “Everything you see on screen (in Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior) is Filmistan Studios. From setting up Covid wards to helping more than 300 stunt artists to donating oxygen cylinders to organizing free Covid-19 vaccination camps, Ajay Devgn proved that he has a heart of gold and truly cares for the situation. Even his non-Covid related social work like paying fees of students belonging to economically weak sections to donating rickshaws and sewing machines to the unemployed to regularly donating food to the poor in rural areas are praiseworthy efforts. The beauty of Ajay Devgn is that he silently works on these fronts and will never shout from the rooftops about it. If a mediaperson asks him about these initiatives, he’ll prefer not to answer. Hence, it’s not surprising that many readers are not aware of this side of Ajay Devgn. Actress Nimrat Kaur is all set to kickstart her 2023 on a great note as she is excited about the projects that lined-up to release this year. But there are many things to look forward to this year for me, She further added, “Now, let’s see what 2023 brings for me. At the moment, I am looking at some very interesting materials. I am sure it is going to be really fun.” Talking about how current time is the best In film industry, she said, “Last year, all the parts that I was offered were very different from each other like chalk and cheese. Director Siddharth Anand has delivered two monstrous hits back to back with War and now Pathaan, which has also become the all-time highest-grossing Hindi film worldwide in the history of cinema. He feels a ‘huge sense of vindication’ with Pathaan proving that people want to come to theatres to see films that give audiences a larger-than-life experience! Siddharth and the visionary S.S. Siddharth says, “There is a huge sense of vindication with Pathaan doing well at the box office. What I believe that films weren’t doing well in the middle because those films were made pre-pandemic. So, there was a period where cinemas were shut and we couldn’t release our films, people weren’t coming back – so there was a prolonged break for our films.” He adds, “And those films were made pre-pandemic, there is a mindset that has changed post-pandemic. There is a viewing pattern that has changed. And those films were unfortunately victims of that change. Even when I was making War, there was a sense of parallel cinema is the new commercial cinema in 2018-2019. You had small independent films and big ideas doing much better than tentpole films till War happened. That time also I felt that – Oh my God, has the viewing pattern changed but War again proved if you make a good cinematic experience film for our masses people will come to theatres.” Siddharth has delivered the biggest hits of superstars Shah Rukh Khan & Hrithik Roshan in these high octane spy films. He says, “I’d like to believe is that I don’t differentiate between the class and the mass audience. I try and cater to both subconsciously – it’s not an effort. An official was quoted in ANI reports, opening up about the complaint registered against the actress saying, “We received a complaint from Eklavya Gaur (son of BJP MLA Malini Gaur) against actor Taapsee Pannu for hurting religious sentiments and image of ‘Sanatan Dharma’ by wearing a locket having ‘Goddess Laxmi’ with revealing dress during ramp walk at Lakme Fashion Week held on March 12 in Mumbai.” The officials have asserted that investigation of the matter in currently in process.
