One of the greatest singers of all time, Lata Mangeshkar, passed away a year ago, on February 6, 2022, at the age of 92. She shared a deep bond with several industry personalities, one of whom was Madhur Bhandarkar. Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to the acclaimed director after the release of his film India Lockdown in December 2022. At that point, he opened up about the legendary singer. We are living in the era of song remixes but Madhur Bhandarkar has never gone for recreations even though music companies definitely must have suggested him to do so. In reply, Madhur Bhandarkar said, “Yes, I have got the suggestion but I never felt the need to do so. But I am not against the recreation of songs. My favourite song is ‘Do Ghoont Mujhe Bhi Pila De Sharabi’ (Jheel Ke Us Paar; 1973) by Lata Mangeshkar. I’d definitely work on a song sung by her or Asha Bhosle if I feel the need. I am a big fan of R D Burman. The songs I play in my car and at home are from films from the 70s and 80s.” Madhur Bhandarkar continued, “My proximity to Lata didi also plays a part. I miss her. There was a time when I would call her every 15 days. Her blessings are always there for me. On January 1, 2022, I called her and asked for her blessings. I told her that I am making a film named India Lockdown. She got very happy and asked me, ‘Madhur, how do you get these titles?’ I was there at her funeral till the very end.” He sighed, “I miss her as interacting with her every now and then was a part of my life for 15-16 years. No matter in which part of the world I am, I would call her. Sometimes, I would play songs from her old films. She would ask me ‘Kaunsi film ka gaana tha yeh’? When I would tell her, she’d be like ‘Oh yes’ and smile. I miss these interactions. There has been a void in my life since her passing. There will not be another Lata didi ever. I still listen to her songs and I keep remembering her. She was genuinely happy about my success.” Madhur Bhandarkar then revealed, “The last song that she sang is with me. I had recorded it for Corporate (2006) but we did not use it in the film. It’s unreleased and the rights are with me. I will definitely use it in some film depending on the situation. This is her third song in my film after ‘Kitne Ajeeb Rishte’ in Page 3 (2005) and ‘Daata Sunn Le’ in Jail (2009).” ‘Kitne Ajeeb Rishte’ is a memorable song, though it was released 17 years ago, and is often remembered when friends turn foes or vice versa. Madhur smiled as he stated, “‘Kitne Ajeeb Rishte’ is a relationship anthem. When warring parties come together in politics or when someone goes through a breakup, this song is played or remembered.” Also Read: India Lockdown EXCLUSIVE: “I don’t know what it is with me and Censor Board”, says Madhur Bhandarkar; reveals Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji was given ‘A’ certificate because of the word ‘virginity’

When Shah Rukh Khan turned 50, the Tamilian maverick actor Kamal Haasan paid the actor who played a Pathan free of fee for Kamal in Hey Ram, lavish compliments for his qualities of humility practicality and apolitical astuteness. Said Kamal Haasan, “Probably Shah Rukh knew where he was headed. Probably he did not know where he'd end up on the ladder but was willing to climb till he could no more. With that mind-set humility is something you had to train on right from the word go. Shah Rukh first practiced on a quality that most successful people try to practice when it is too late. Early trainers like him require least humility lessons at the top late trainers learn the hard way. Humility is taught through humiliating lessons.” Kamal was all praise for Shah Rukh’s powers of apolitical articulation. “Shah Rukh spoke the best part of his mind for all to hear and the worst part he digested like food and the world never saw it. No, that does not make him a politician.” Kamal Haasan is extremely fond of Shah Rukh. They go back a long way to the time 12 years ago, when Shah Rukh agreed to do an extended cameo in Kamal Haasan's Hey Ram. Kamal Haasan who played the role of the cop on the lookout for a serial killer in the Tamil hit Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu, expressed a keen interest in Shah Rukh playing the role in the film's Hindi version. When Gautham Menon, who understandably respects Kamalji opinion, asked the thespian who should play his role in the Hindi remake, Kamal promptly gave Shah Rukh's name. Kamal Haasan and Shah Rukh share a mutual admiration society from the time they worked together in Hey Ram in 2000. Shah Rukh had refused to charge any money for the film claiming that the honour of working with the great Kamal Haasan was reward enough. Says Kamal Haasan appreciatively, "Shah Rukh is a true Pathan. A man of his words. I owe him a big favour." For a party in Chennai to celebrate Kamal Haasan’s career in 2013 Shah Rukh not only flew down he danced drenched in sweat from head to toe. Recalled Kamal Haasan, "He danced wonderfully on stage and it looked like he had come out of the bath and forgotten to dry." The air conditioning at the posh luxury hotel had conked off leaving SRK swathed in sweat. Says Kamal, "It was every celebrity-bash's worst nightmare come true. The air conditioning at the hotel broke down. We were all left seething and simmering in the heat, helpless, angry and bitter. Shah Rukh was fully and formally dressed in a suit for the occasion. His condition in the heat was indescribable. But look at this entertainer! He pulled off his coat, jumped on to the stage and danced, although he dripped sweat like he had just had a bath." Shah Rukh, we are told, was pretty much completely drained out and on the verge of dehydration after his sweat-soaked performance. "But he didn't care. At that moment, he forgot all his discomfort. It was just Shah Rukh Saab (that's how Kamal Haasan addresses his junior colleague) and the stage. He is a natural-born entertainer," says Kamal Haasan. Says Kamal emotionally, “Shah Rukh is an artiste at heart and I wish my younger brother stays that way. I wish that success like the one it always has will sit very lightly on his shoulder. Wishing more success to him will induce only emotional sniffles but then that might be only from his detractors .Old friends like me never tire of his success. More to you, Brother, more of all that you love in life” Also Read: Pathaan: Shah Rukh Khan kept Tiger’s scarf as memento; talks about epic cameo of Salman Khan: ‘Matlab fans ka sawaal hai, choti script pe nahi chodh sakte’

Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar created the ‘angry young man’ trope in the 80s in Hindi cinema with Zanjeer which changed the trajectory of the writer duo Salim-Javed and Amitabh Bachchan. As Big B became one of the biggest stars of that era, so did the writers who went on to pen several big films. Salim Khan recently recalled how many actors had said no to the film. In an interview on Bollywood Bubble, Salim Khan told Arbaaz Khan that actors like Dharmendra, Dev Anand and Dilip Kumar had passed on the script of Zanjeer when it finally landed with Amitabh Bachchan. No leading lady was attached to the project and many didn’t want to star due to the small role. So, Amitabh Bachchan reached out to Jaya Bachchan and asked her to star in it. Khan revealed, “I suggested ki Jaya Bachchan ko le lo. She will do it and she will do it for him. Kahani bhi sunayi Jaya ko toh unhone kaha ki mera toh kuch hai nahi ismein zyada. Maine kaha ki haan ismein kuch hai nahi aapka zyada magar Amitabh Bachchan ke liye yeh ek aisi kahani hai ki yeh phod ke rakh degi (I suggested let’s take Jaya Bachchan. She will do it and she will do it for him. When I narrated the story to her, she said that she doesn’t have much to do in the film. I said yes, you don’t have much to do here but it can change Amitabh’s career).” Salim Khan said that Amitabh Bachchan was known for his professionalism and Salim-Javed ensure to bring up his name during every project. However, following the split of Salim and Javed, Amitabh didn’t keep in touch with Salim as he was reserved in nature. He said, “Yeh joh thi relation rakhne ki responsibility, unpe thi. Aap jab bahut bade star ho jaate ho, aapki responsibility hoti hai ki usse milna julna joh bhi ho, relationship rakhna yeh aapka farz banta hai. Joh ki unhone shayad kisi wajah se nahi kiya (The responsibility of maintaining relationships was his. When you become a big star, it is on you to maintain relationships, which, for some reason, he did not do).” Meanwhile, Amitabh Bachchan was last seen in Brahmastra and Unnchai. Ever since the 16th season of Bigg Boss premiered on TV, Dalljiet Kaur has often been trending on social media. For the unversed, Dalljiet’s former husband and actor Shalin Bhanot has participated in the Salman Khan-hosted show. The duo had parted ways on an ugly note. However, this time, the actress is making headlines for a good reason as after eight years of her divorce from Shalin Bhanot, she has finally decided to give love a second chance. Yes! You read it right. The Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon actress is all set to tie the knot with UK-based Nikhil Patel, who works with a finance company, in March this year. Post her wedding with Nikhil, she will move with her nine-year-old son, Jaydon, to London. While speaking about the same, Dalljiet told the Times Of India, “The wedding is in March, and I am still figuring out a lot of things. I will move to Nairobi (Africa) for a couple of years, as Nikhil is placed there for work right now. We will eventually move back to London, where he was born and raised.” The 40-year-old TV actress further added, “I met Nick at a friend’s party in Dubai last year. I only spoke about my son, and he was talking about his two daughters, 13-year-old Aariyana and eight-year-old Aanika. He wore blue nail polish on his toes, and when I asked him about it, he replied, ‘I am a proud dad of two girls.’ The romance wasn’t in the air back then; it was just two single parents chatting. Love happened with time. It was our love for our children that connected us. While Anika lives with her mother in the US, Aariyana will live with us.” As the conversation progressed further, Dalljiet also spoke about her plans to facilitate Shalin and Jaydon’s meeting. She said, “Jaydon needs to have the most normal life and he can only have that if he has his people, including Shalin, around him. Shalin is more than welcome to meet Jaydon and I will bring him to India to meet him. He should know that his father loves him. Hamein iss bachhe ka sochna chahiye jiska koi lena dena nahi hai jo bhi jhagde hue ya nahi hue. Both of us need to step up as his parents and this is our chance. If Shalin gets married, I will be the one to introduce that girl to Jaydon.” Talking about giving love a second chance, Dallijiet explained, “My biggest fear was that I shouldn’t make a wrong decision. However, as I was picking up the broken pieces of my life, along with realising how much Jaydon missed having a dad, it was also about me missing a companion, which I didn’t feel earlier. I am in love with Nikhil and can feel butterflies in my stomach every time he calls me. I never thought this would happen. I always thought that I would marry first and then fall in love.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by DALLJIET KAUR ੴ (@kaurdalljiet) As she will be relocating to the UK, the actress also shed some light on continuing her acting career. She asserted, “I have signed a couple of projects and am ready to come back to Mumbai. Nick says that he will take care of the kids when I am travelling as I will do the same when he is travelling for work. Bahut fears hain, but because Nick is holding my hand through this, I think everything will be great.” Also Read: Bigg Boss 16: After Shalin Bhanot breaks down, ex-wife Dalljiet Kaur expresses her support for him on social media

After the pandemic, the theatrical collections got hit initially. This prompted the filmmakers to reduce the window between theatrical release and OTT premiere from 8 weeks to 4 weeks. Once the cinema business gradually came back on track, the industry went back to following the old rule from August 1, 2022. Ever since, all the films which have been released in cinemas have arrived on streaming giants only after completion of 8 weeks. However, two major films of last year – Vikram Vedha and Bhediya – have still not arrived on any OTT platform, despite the former releasing in theatres 19 weeks ago and the latter 11 weeks ago. A lot of moviegoers are wondering about the reason behind it and can be seen discussing it on social media. Bollywood Hungama has found out the reason behind the delayed digital premieres of these two movies. A source told Bollywood Hungama, “Both Vikram Vedha and Bhediya will be premiered on the new super-app of Jio. This super-app is going to be launched soon and is sure to become a talking point. Along with the premieres of Vikram Vedha and Bhediya, it’s the app where IPL (Indian Premier League) 2023 will also be aired.” Another source said, “The idea is to premiere not just Vikram Vedha and Bhediya but also several other films. As per the plan, every week, there’ll be a film premiere. While some of these are theatrical releases, a few of them will get a direct OTT release. The list of all these films will be hopefully unveiled at the time of the launch of the super-app.” Meanwhile, there has been a discussion on social media that this new app will be called JioVoot but there has been no confirmation on the same from our sources. Vikram Vedha, which was released on September 30, 2022, starred Hrithik Roshan, Saif Ali Khan and Radhika Apte. It is directed by Pushkar-Gayatri, who also directed the 2017 original Tamil film of the same name, co-starring R Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi. Bhediya, on the other hand, starred Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon. Directed by Amar Kaushik of Stree (2018) and Bala (2019) fame, it was released in cinemas on November 25, 2022. On January 24, 1992, Rajiv Rai released his magnum opus, Vishwatma, in cinemas. The film had an ensemble star cast, featuring Sunny Deol, Naseeruddin Shah, Chunky Panday, Divya Bharti, Sonam, Amrish Puri, Jyotsna Singh and Gulshan Grover. The film is remembered today for its action and massy scenes and of course the cult song ‘Saat Samandar Paar’. On Vishwatma’s 31st anniversary, Rajiv Rai exclusively spoke to Bollywood Hungama about the film, his experience of shooting it in Kenya and a lot more. In Vishwatma (1992), Mohra (1994) and Gupt (1997), the image of the Ambe Ma idol from Shree Mangal Mandir, Nairobi, Kenya is shown in the beginning. Vishwatma was also shot in Kenya. Could you tell us about this connection? That’s a good question! My co-producer Ajay Shah was associated with that temple in some way. I used to visit it regularly. In fact, I even got married in the same temple! Though my marriage broke up, I must say that the temple is very auspicious and it made me feel like I was in India. It didn’t give you a feeling that it was located in some foreign country. Hence, I showed its glimpse in the beginning out of respect for Ambe Ma and my co-producer. There was no real calculation behind it. It was just one of those things that came from my heart and I did it in those films that Ajay Shah co-produced with me. How did you decide to shoot Vishwatma in Kenya? This was probably the first Bollywood film which was shot in the African country… I went to Kenya for Sharad Patel’s daughter’s wedding; he’s a profound filmmaker - he made Rise And Fall Of Idi Amin (1981) - and a very dear family friend. Their son Raju Patel was also a very close friend of mine who made several Hollywood movies including Bachelor Party (1984) starring Tom Hanks. Unfortunately, Raju Patel passed away at a young age due to cancer complications. The wedding was my first visit to Kenya and when I returned to Mumbai, I decided to shoot there. Fortunately, I also had other family friends who owned hotels and we shot in their properties. The group is called Sarova Group of Hotels and it still exists in Kenya and the United Kingdom. That’s when I also met my co-producer, Ajay Shah, who was also politically connected in the country and a very nice gentleman. Sharad Patel, meanwhile, helped me with the technical equipment etc. I hired his lights, generators and cameras. Due to these connections, I was motivated to shoot in Kenya. Back in those days, it was very difficult to shoot in foreign lands because the government would not provide foreign exchange money. So, we had to really plan this film very well and ensure our paperwork was legally in order so that we were able to import the film back to India without complications. Of course, this took a lot of time and energy but it was all worth it in the end. Despite these issues, it was convenient to shoot in Kenya. I loved the locations and the people of the country. Somebody may have shot a film before me in Kenya. I am not sure. But definitely, nobody has gone and shot a whole film there. As mentioned before, I had many connections and I am indebted to all of them. They were very helpful. It was heartening to see how Indians outside the country help fellow Indians. Vishwatma set a big example of it. My mesmerizing experience opened doors for other Indians to shoot abroad. Later, filmmakers began shooting anywhere and everywhere where they could get hold of subsidies. The United Kingdom today is a very apt example. But the poor and third-world African countries could not afford to give subsidies. So, you needed to go there, find your connections and get your discounts! Was Bubbles Disco, where the iconic ‘Saat Samandar Paar’ was shot, also found through connections? Yes. Every location that you see in the film was made accessible thanks to my co-producers and friends there. Ketan Somaia owned Bubbles Discotheque and the casino there. So that was made available to us. Back in those days, it was difficult to make a grand Bollywood film abroad if you didn’t have personal connections. ‘Saat Samandar Paar’ was also used in Sajid Nadiadwala’s Kick (2014) as a tribute to Divya Bharti… Yes. Unfortunately, and laughingly, nobody took permission from me. But it’s okay as they are all friends of mine and I didn’t mind. But today, I am trying to make it clear that you cannot use a song of mine in another film without my permission. As per the trivia on IMDb, Madhuri Dixit and Ayesha Jhulka were offered Divya Bharti’s role. Is that true? These are rumours. If they were offered, why wouldn’t they do it? IMDb should call me, read out every trivia written about me and my film, and I’ll correct the misinformation! I have hardly been rejected by anyone in my career. So, if anyone writes that somebody rejected my film, it’s all bullshit. Maybe two or three times, it had happened where actors didn’t have dates. 90% of the time, however, people wanted to work with me. So, why would one say ‘No’ to me? Today, it’s very different. I am not in the limelight and not very well-known anymore. So the big stars might refuse me and the younger generation of actors might not remember me! In fact, a lot of young generation actors don’t know who I am. They ask me, ‘Who are you?’. I mean, it’s okay for me. I don’t have an ego and I don’t care. People don’t want to work with older filmmakers or directors. And that’s why most of the films which are coming out are pretty sad and bad as we are not working with experienced people in Bollywood. The younger directors don’t have the training ground in making good films. At times, the directors go haywire and become self-indulgent. That doesn’t help and hence, many of them take the support of the OTT platforms to release their films. We didn’t have OTT platforms in our days. We had to make the films work and make the audiences sit in their seats! Yes, and you did. In fact, while seeing the film again, I realized that Sunny Deol actually was hanging from the moving aeroplane in the climax… Yes. There were no special effects or cables in Vishwatma. The films in the 80s and 90s were real. Even in my upcoming film, Zora, everything is real. There are no special effects except for the gunshots where we had to put some effects and that’s about it. When you show fake action, people can guess it’s not real and it’s really not working out that well. You gave commercial roles to Naseeruddin Shah. Was it difficult to make him dance in songs? There’s nothing difficult when it comes to Naseeruddin Shah. You just need to do things very quickly with him. You cannot test a good actor’s patience. Good actors like him don’t require retakes because their first takes are the very best. I had to keep that in mind while I was working with Naseeruddin Shah and doing his fight or dance sequences. But I didn’t have any problems. He adapted to everything that was required to be done in all my films. He’s a very focused and hardworking actor and I would say one of the best actors in India, then and now. Rarely does he essay such roles and with you, he did it thrice… I had seen all of his films. I am an ardent art film watcher. Back in those days, I used to look up to the movies made by Shyam Benegal, Satyajit Ray etc. There was a fabulous parallel cinema movement at that time from where I learnt a lot. I admired it more than the commercial cinema (laughs)! Technically, they were progressive. They were so good with sound and photography. They never left the sync sound at that time. They took a lot of effort into the all technical aspects of the film. Even though the films were a little slow-paced, the casting would be fabulous and the storytelling had a different texture to it. So, the art cinema was a training ground for me. I realize I am saying this for the first time in an interview! So, I had seen all the works of Naseeruddin Shah and I thought it’ll be a good change to take this actor and put him in a different avatar, thereby getting a different audience to watch him. The commercial audience was not watching art and parallel cinema back in those days. I am glad I did so and it paid off really well. And then everybody started taking actors from art cinema. Did you visit cinema halls to check audience reaction? I rarely went to the theatres to hear the hooting or the claps to pat myself on the back. Also, I would have seen my film a hundred times and it would be boring for me to see it again. Whether they were burning the cinema down or screaming with joy, whatever the reactions may have been to my various films, I didn’t check. Those days, there used to be adverse reactions, like seatein tod di or audiences throwing money on the screen. Once I get the commercial results and know what has happened with the film, I move on. However, I did see every other Hindi film with the audiences and got their reactions. I do that even today. If you want to see me, you can do so at a multiplex, where I’ll be watching the first day first show of the latest release! After years of speculations around their relationship and the couple maintaining that they are more than close friends, actors Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani are set to tie the knot in February 2023. The Shershaah pair is reportedly getting married at Suryagarh Palace in Jaisalmer and the prep is on in full swing. Reports reveal that the massive property has suites and havelis which cost up to a whopping Rs. 1, 10,500 per night. The rates of the least expensive room start out at Rs. 20,000 per night. With Rs. 667 crores collections globally, Pathaan is soaring high beating box office records for a Hindi film. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham, the film is only its 9th running day in theatres and has smashed the collections. As Siddharth Anand is rejoicing in the success of his second blockbuster, the director is also answering questions on varied topics. The film is also called a 'pale imitation of Hollywood'. Speaking to Gulf News, Siddharth Anand reasoned, "That’s inevitable when you make a film that’s beyond the conventions of Bollywood films. You’re instantly compared to Hollywood, which obviously has better infrastructure, better technology, and huger budgets. It will always seem like we’re trying to imitate that, but our limitations are much more. We also have ambitions, our directors have the ability to mount films, but we’re limited by reach because our films are made in one language, which is Hindi. Our revenues are directly proportional to the budgets we can afford.” "I have to admit, I haven’t watched more than two MCU films. I’m not a fan of that genre. I’ve seen a couple of them. My son is a huge fan, and he’s an encyclopedia. He briefs me and keeps me up to date. I have to run my scripts and my sequences past him, and he’ll say, ‘No, dad, this is in that film. No, you can’t do this, this has already been done.’ I’m like, ‘What the hell do I do?’ So, I take ideas from him on how to manoeuvre things around. I think I should get on the bandwagon and start watching those films, so that there’s no overlap," the director admitted on not watching even Marvel movies. Meanwhile, on the work front, Siddharth Anand will next helm Fighter starring Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone. It will mark in his second project with the stars after War and Pathaan, respectively. The film is set for Republic Day 2024 release. Speaking about Katrina, he claimed he 'loves' his wife, and added that a person in love is always the best version of themselves. Vicky also stated that he tries to be the greatest spouse he can be. When questioned about his ideal man image, Vicky told Lifestyle Asia India, “I’m not perfect in any way. Not as a husband, a son, a friend or an actor. I think that’s the ongoing quest and the process of reaching that is, I think, where I’ve always wanted to be. Being perfect is like a mirage, you know? You always feel you’re reaching there but you’re never quite there. So, I don’t think I’m a perfect husband. In a statement released by Advocate Rizwan Siddiquee, it said, "Mr. Nawazuddin Siddiqui and his family members did everything possible to remove my client Mrs. Aaliya Siddiqui from the house. They filed an untenable criminal complaint of trespass against her. Thereafter, through the police they threatened to arrest her and were calling her each day to the Police Station, after sunset.” Further it spoke about the way the police treated her continuing, “Whilst, I do not want to directly attribute the actions and the failures of the police department to them, yet the fact remains that no police officer ever came to protect my clients rights, even when her modesty was insulted before the police officers. Not only her relationship with Mr. Nawazuddin Siddiqui was questioned before the Police Officer, but even the legitimacy of the minor son was questioned. Yet the police officer did not act on the written complaint given by my client under Section 509 of IPC.” The lawyer also posted a video of him giving this statement on social media. No police officer came forward to protect my clients' rights. Instead, security guards of @Nawazuddin_S had the audacity to try to restrain my client from signing Court papers for Domestic Violence & for quashing of FIR This "jungle raj" will stop. I HAVE FULL FAITH IN COURTS https://t.co/SvAb8SanT0 pic.twitter.com/VUpngdNzkG — Advocate Rizwan Siddiquee (@RizwanSiddiquee) January 29, 2023 “Mr. Nawazuddin Siddiqui and his family members have, in the last seven days ensured that no food, no bed, and no bathroom to take bath is given to my client. They have even posted innumerable male bodyguards all around my client and further installed CCTV cameras in the hall, where my client is currently staying with her minor children,” added the statement. It concluded stating, “To add to all of this, they even ensured that I do not obtain any signatures of my client to file appropriate court cases against Mr. Nawazuddin Siddiqui and his family members. Aditya Rawal, son of the veteran actor Paresh Rawal, is playing the role of the terrorist Nibras in Hansal Mehta’s Faraaz. The film is a hostage drama about a terrorist taking a number of people hostage at an eatery. Aditya agreed that playing a character who belongs to another religion, in the case Islam, can be risky and one should ensure that the research is in place. In a chat with Mid-Day, the young actor said, “There is a risk in depicting a religion that you don’t belong to. So, Hansal sir roped in the film’s associate writer, Ekhlaq Ahmed Khan, for workshops. [He taught us] how to recite suras, understand some facets of the religion, and how the same point can be interpreted in two ways, which is also what the film is about.” Aditya credits Hansal Mehta for his mature handling of such a sensitive subject. “From our first meeting, Hansal sir and I sensed the direction we wanted to take for Nibras,” he said. “A lot of radicalised youngsters are vulnerable, lonely and get [influenced by] the wrong kind of people. They are intelligent, driven boys who could have become world leaders. Instead, they were taken down this dark path.” Faraaz is based on the terror attack that took place in Dhaka’s Holey Artisan Bakery in 2016. The film also stars Shashi Kapoor’s grandson Zahan Kapoor along with Juhi Babbar, Aamir Ali and Pallak Lalwani. The movie is all set to release in theatres on February 3. Siddharth Anand’s movies rework old lyrics with fresh tunes While traditional or old popular compositions are frequently reworked in movies, director Siddharth Anand has shown a predilection to repeat or rework such lyrics rather than tunes. The very popular ‘Besharam Rang’ from Pathaan begins with the lines ‘Hamein To Loot Liya Milke Ishqwalon Ne’ which is a throwback to the 1958 film Al Hilal’s endemically popular qawwali, ‘Hamein To Loot Liya Milke Husnwalon Ne / Kaale Kaale Baalo Ne Gore Gore Gaalon Ne’. The director’s earlier film, War not only had a dance number with the mukhda ‘Jai Jai Shiv Shankar’ (the Aap Ki Kasam evergreen) but also used the much-celebrated ‘Ghunghroo Toot Gaye’ with versions heard at least twice before in films (in Naushad’s Dharam Kanta and Bappi Lahiri’s Param Dharam in the 1980s) as well as from Runa Laila and Pankaj Udhas, all with minor tweaks in lyrics. When Anand Bakshi likened himself to a shopkeeper And lyrics remind us of the peerless Anand Bakshi, who was humble enough to accept that he had a “shop” from which producers could choose “what they wanted”. In 1997, when he replaced Majrooh Sultanpuri in Yugpurush as the latter refused to write what he termed “cheap” lyrics for a situation, he famously said, “As a shopkeeper, I cannot tell a customer, ‘Here, I like this, so buy it and pay me too for it!’ The customer should buy what he likes, and pay me for that!” When help was needed from the Almighty Anand Bakshi’s favourite associate, (Laxmikant-)Pyarelal, was highly amused when he told me this story. “We had got Bakshi-ji to sing two songs, both hits in Mom Ki Gudia (1972). But the film bombed badly and the new hero’s career was over. Bakshi-ji was distraught, and when we offered him the introductory prelude of ‘Aaja Teri Yaad Aayi’ sung by Rafi-saab and Lata-bai in Charas, he became superstitious and requested us to show religious symbols like churches throughout his background vocals segment. Watch the song and you will know what I mean!” Late for duty but note-perfect And this is a story that connects Pyarelal’s partner Laxmikant with O.P. Nayyar, a stickler for punctuality and discipline. When he was a musician, Laxmikant was playing the violin for a Nayyar song and the recording was at Famous Studios. Nayyar would throw out even singers who came late, and musicians were also shown the door and payment refused. For the final take, Laxmikant was late and he surreptitiously entered the recording studio from the back door and took his place. But after the recording, Nayyar summoned him. A helpless Laxmikant admitted that he had been late. Nayyar told him, “I do not pay musicians who come in late. So you will not get that money (Laxmikant would then be paid Rs. 75!). But you played so well just by reading the notations! Good work!” And he took out more than that sum from his pocket and paid the delighted youngster! Vocal, not instrumental music for us Indians! In my only meeting with lyricist-composer Ravindra Jain, the veteran had told me, “In our country, instrumental music never works, except with the elite who go in for classical raags played on instruments, like Ustad Bismillah Khan’s shehnai. We need words to connect with our emotions, and that is why songs do so well.” At an event to commemorate Jain’s Silver Jubilee (25 years) in films, Rajkumar Barjatya (father to whizkid Sooraj R. Barjatya) of Rajshri Productions, with which the composer did as astounding 17 films, openly told the audience that “He is an even better lyricist than a composer.” Kishore for Ranbir, Rafi for Pulkit—what marks a true-blue playback singer! Kishore Kumar’s voice was used with the aid of technology by Vishal-Shekhar for Ranbir Kapoor in the film Bachna Ae Haseeno for the re-created title-song. The song originally featured in the 1977 Hum Kisise Kum Naheen, and viewers noticed a perfect fit though Kishore had also sung for his father Rishi Kapoor (and once even for Raj Kapoor!). The same was true when a part of Mohammed Rafi’s ‘O Meri Mehbooba’ (Dharam-Veer) was sampled in the re-creation for Fukrey Returns and filmed on Pulkit Samrat. True-blue playback singers always fit any generation of actor—another proof being Asha Bhosle singing for Vidya Balan in Begum Jaan, because Vidya was born when Asha was 46 years old! When Javed Akhtar highlighted uniqueness of Hindi cinema Lyricist Javed Akhtar once emphasized during a conversational interview with me that Hindi films only had a total of 8 to 10 principal song situations. “Around these, we lyricists and composers have composed thousands of songs!” he preened with due pride. Now, this fact is indeed remarkable when one thinks of it. And as of now, the score must probably be plus or minus 40,000 songs! Sonu Nigam on pitch-correction software Sonu Nigam is not too pleased with the overuse of pitch-correction software like Auto-Tune. “Such things are meant as a technical help when needed, not as a remedy for off-key voices,” he told me once. “Today, anyone can become a singer with this software. In the morning, such crooners should worship this software like a God.” Adnan Sami on relative values in music Did you know that the harmonium, now omnipresent in Indian music, is actually a foreign instrument that originated in France? Recalled Adnan Sami, who uses it to compose music, “I remember reading about how the harmonium had been banned at one time by All-India Radio because it was considered a foreign instrument since it was derived from the accordion.” The violin was also not accepted initially as an Indian instrument as it came from Italy. But today, both instruments are considered key (pun intended) tools in Indian music. Says Adnan, “I hink that it’s all a matter of Time. What is standard today was experimental when it began and yesterday’s pop star is today’s classical musician!” Shreya Ghoshal reveals a secret about ‘Chikni Chameli’ Shreya Ghoshal too has a problem with singing songs that have double entendre and more. Having sung well-worded and classy seductive beauties like ‘Jadoo Hai Nasha Hai’ and ‘Chalo Tumko Lekar Chale’ for Jism, she has a problem when the lyrics are objectionable. “I made sure certain parts of ‘Chikni Chameli’ (Agneepath) were modified. It’s very simple – we are not like the West – yet! There is a social responsibility that all artistes should have. Indians still have a comfort level in being covered. If that means not going with the times, then so be it! Indians worldwide are being increasingly respected and honoured for their cerebral qualities and that’s the way it should be! I am not insecure, so why should I sing such attention-grabbing lyrics?” Also Read: Pathaan: Siddharth Anand says Shah Rukh Khan ‘never went away’ when asked about his comeback: ‘Some of the films he was doing before were not justifying his stardom’

Last year turned out to be tremendous for Alia Bhatt, not just professionally but also at a personal level. After giving quality performances in a number of films, she also got married to fellow actor Ranbir Kapoor and gave birth to their daughter Raha later in the year. During the launch of this year’s Zee Cine Awards, Alia opened up about her priorities in life, now that she is a mother. When asked about her life currently, the actress said, “I am a take-each-day kind of a person. I will take it one day at a time and will definitely give it my best. But definitely, priorities have changed. My number one priority in my life is my daughter, who I love deeply. My next love, or next to next or actually my first love is movies and cinema and working. I will try my best and maybe it will be quality over quantity, jo buri baat nahin hai (which is not a bad thing).” Last year, Alia struck gold with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi, Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva and her cameo in SS Rajamouli’s global hit RRR. The actress revealed in the same conversation that during this year’s Zee Cine Awards, she would be performing on songs from these three films – ‘Dholida,’ ‘Kesariya’ and ‘Nacho Nacho’ respectively. “It’s been one of my most special years and these songs are the biggest hits of my career. I cannot reveal much but it will be an act that I have not done before,” added Alia. Along with acting in the aforementioned films, Alia also debuted as a producer with the Netflix movie Darlings las year. She co-produced the film along with Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment. The film and Alia’s performance received appreciation. Riding high on the success of Pathaan, filmmaker Siddharth Anand has now given two back-to-back blockbusters. After War and Pathaan, he has become the undisputed number-one director of his genre in India. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone & John Abraham, the film has already collected Rs. 591 crores gross worldwide! But, the film did face its fair share of controversies especially when boycott calls were made after ‘Besharam Rang’ was released. Several outfits had raised objections to Deepika Padukone wearing a saffron bikini. Speaking to Deadline, when asked if he was worried about the negativity around Pathaan ahead of its release, he said, “All I know is they tried to boycott Pathaan and audiences came out in large numbers and supported it. I think if you’re going to boycott something or raise your voice against it, there has to be some merit in that. It has to be substantiated with some facts and some reality. What they were trying to do with Pathaan was just ridiculous and the audience has given its verdict. There’s also been a huge amount of support for Shah Rukh who has been a soft target in recent years. That’s why the film has done such big numbers. There’s been such an outpouring of love – they came in wanting to like the film and not to judge it.” Talking about the recent surge of South movies doing really well in the North market and how Pathaan has broken several records, he added, “We’ve captured all four quadrants, families are going in large numbers, men, women, youth audience, across both multiplexes and single screens. It’s also firing in all territories. Earlier it was a little slow in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh because people were afraid of protests. That was on the first day. But by evening, the numbers started increasing. The South is also coming in with big numbers, not just the Tamil and Telugu dubbed versions, but they’re also coming for the original Hindi version because they want to hear Shah Rukh speaking in his original voice.” On the work front, Siddharth Anand is next directing Fighter headlined by Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone. The film is set for Republic Day 2024 release. ALSO READ: Siddharth Anand proved to be 'pandemic proof'; delivers all-time blockbuster Pathaan

We can’t wait for audiences to see her on-screen in a brand new avatar, along with Varun and the incredibly talented ensemble cast we have on board for this series,” said Aparna Purohit, head of India Originals, Prime Video. “The canvas for the Indian installment of Citadel is larger than life but the treatment and texture is retro, rooted, and quirky. Siddharth Anand, with War and now Pathaan, has become the undisputed number one director of his genre in India. While War with Hrithik Roshan, Tiger Shroff & Vaani Kapoor collected Rs. 477 crore gross worldwide, with Pathaan starring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone & John Abraham, Siddharth has outdone himself as the film in just 6 days has already collected Rs. 591 crore gross worldwide! Speaking of the massive success of the film, the filmmaker said that the inaccessibility of Shah Rukh Khan created curiosity. Khan made his return to big screen after a gap of four years though he had cameos in Laal Singh Chaddha and Brahmastra last year. Speaking to Variety, Siddharth said, “There was a lot of curiosity to see Shah Rukh Khan back after his hiatus – he took a break from media, from appearances, he just became inaccessible to the world, there suddenly was a thirst that he created for him – today, audiences are used to stars being out there in social media and events and everywhere.” “He created that enigmatic quality, that mystery around him, which a star should have and then did a film that is in a very popular genre. That coupled with the fact that the teaser landed so well, the songs became such huge hits, and to top it all the trailer gave the impact that it should. Everything just fell into place for the film. That’s what created this mass hysteria,” Anand added. Siddharth Anand is himself stumped by the level of success Pathaan has witnessed. “These numbers are surreal. When we hit the first day numbers for ‘War’, we were ecstatic, elated, and we thought it’s so tough to do and won’t happen again. It’s once in a lifetime we get these kind of numbers going, but to have hit it again in my next film, and then hit it for four days and after that on the weekend, it’s a feeling I can’t even describe. It’s unreal, I just feel sometimes I am dreaming,” the director said. Speaking of how boycott calls were made due to saffron swimsuit work by Deepika Padukone in 'Besharam Rang' song, he said, “The film has spoken and the film’s intentions have spoken. And the fact that it had nothing offensive, it’s such a patriotic film that it does inspire you. That’s reached the audience – the audience is too smart to get fooled by fake boycott calls.” Siddharth Anand is the only Hindi film director to have delivered five Rs. 50+ crore nett box office days and also five Rs. 100+ crore worldwide gross box office days with War and Pathaan, with the SRK starrer delivering 4 out of 5!
