In a legal blow to Tanushree Dutta, a Mumbai court has rejected her plea against the relief granted to veteran actor Nana Patekar in the #MeToo case she had filed. Despite the setback, Tanushree remains undeterred and has vowed to continue her fight with even greater determination.

Taking to social media, Tanushree Dutta insisted that she has some ‘good news’ to share with her fans, wherein she said, “The court has cancelled the B-summary report filed by the Mumbai Police on the Horn Ok Pleassss sexual harassment complaint against Nana Patekar and others. The police had tried to close the case in 2019 by citing a false and malicious B-summary report without even talking to any of my witnesses, meanwhile my witnesses all were getting threats by Nana's goons and underworld liasons. Recently one of our prime witness directly deposited her testimony against Patekar in court and corroborated my whole complaint and also the fact that she was pressured into silence by unknown men threatening her over fone. The court took cognizance of this witness testimony via a filed affidavit and came to the conclusion that the B summary report by the police cannot be accepted by court. So we have won this case and now the Mumbai Police will have to file a chargesheet on the matter”.

“Me and my legal team have won the case, and any media house that is printing a false totally opposite story will have to answer the court and will by default become a party to the harassment case. The court has dismissed/ cancelled/refused to take cognizance of the B-summary report filed by police on the 2008 harassment incident on the Horn ok please movie set. Nana Patekar tried to close the case on himself by filing a B summary but court has rejected it. So the case is still open and the police will have to file a chargesheet on the case against Nana. Stop spreading fake news because this is my season of victory. Chargesheet will be filed soon on Nana Patekar and others as police have no other option now”, she wrote in yet another post among the many she shared on the platform.

Speaking about the case, on Friday, the Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Andheri officially disposed of two sexual harassment cases filed by Tanushree against Nana Patekar, choreographer Ganesh Acharya, director Rakesh Sarang, and producer Abdul Sami Abdul Gani Siddiqui. The complaints, registered at the Oshiwara police station in October 2018, were related to alleged incidents that took place in March 2008 and October 2010 on the sets of the film Horn Ok Pleassss. Metropolitan Magistrate NV Bansal ruled that the first case would be closed, as the police had submitted the closure reports beyond the permissible time frame.

This legal decision follows a previous ruling where another Mumbai court had dismissed the case against Nana Patekar and the three co-accused. While the verdict marks a significant legal hurdle for Tanushree Dutta, she has reiterated her commitment to seeking justice, emphasizing that this outcome has only strengthened her resolve.

In a remarkable turn of events in Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh, villagers embarked on a treasure hunt after watching the Bollywood film Chhaava, starring Vicky Kaushal. The film, which portrays historical events, led to widespread rumours that Mughal-era gold coins were buried near Asirgarh Fort. Motivated by these tales, locals began excavating fields with flashlights and metal detectors, hoping to unearth hidden treasures.

The digging commenced around 7 PM and continued until 3 AM, with villagers working tirelessly through the night. This fervour was fueled by longstanding legends associating Asirgarh Fort with hidden riches. However, despite extensive efforts, no substantial evidence or treasures were discovered.

Authorities intervened after videos of the excavation activities went viral on social media. The police issued warnings against unauthorized digging, emphasizing the potential dangers and legal implications of such actions. They urged the public not to be swayed by unfounded rumours and to refrain from engaging in illegal activities.

This incident underscores the profound impact of media on public perception and behaviour. While Chhaava is a work of fiction, its portrayal of Burhanpur’s historical significance seems to have blurred the lines between reality and imagination for some viewers. Experts caution against taking cinematic depictions as historical facts, especially when they lead to actions that defy legal and safety norms.

Asirgarh Fort holds historical importance and is frequently associated with Mughal Emperor Akbar, as well as tales of hidden treasures from the Mughal plunder during their campaigns against the Marathas.

The recent film Chhaava seems to have revived these ancient stories, leading locals to attempt finding the hidden treasure.

Chhaava is an Indian historical action film directed by Laxman Utekar, depicting the life of Sambhaji Maharaj, the second ruler of the Maratha Empire, with Vicky Kaushal playing the lead role.

The movie features scenes implying that Mughal forces plundered treasures from the Marathas and hid them in Asirgarh Fort.

Actress Neetu Chandra recently submitted a petition regarding the use of vulgar and explicit songs in Bollywood. The case is now set to be heard on March 28, 2025. On Friday, a hearing took place before a bench led by Acting Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, Ashutosh Kumar. The court requested the central government to clarify its position on the issue. It was noted that the case seemed to be a public interest litigation, which also highlighted concerns about the use of derogatory language and abusive remarks towards women in Bhojpuri songs.

In the Public Interest Litigation (PIL), the petitioner claims that the song "Maniac" by Yo Yo Honey Singh, is filled with vulgar content. The song is said to depict women in an inappropriate manner, commercializing them by presenting them as objects for consumption. It further argues that women are portrayed as mere sex symbols in the song.

The use of double entendre in the lyrics of the songs amplifies their vulgarity. This negatively impacts children, women, and society as a whole. Additionally, the inclusion of Bhojpuri language terms paints women in a very poor and degrading light.

At present, there are no regulations restricting vulgar songs. The actress filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Patna High Court, alleging that Honey Singh's song "Maniac" promotes vulgarity and sexualizes women. The PIL also names other collaborators involved in the song, including lyricist Leo Grewal and Bhojpuri singers Ragini Vishwakarma and Arjun Ajanabi.

The plea stated that the fundamental right to freedom of speech and expression is guaranteed by the Constitution of India, but it also has its limitations. It calls for legal action against those who violate these limits and suggests that they should face appropriate consequences, with strict enforcement of rules.

Star Cast: Gajraj Rao, Sparsh Shrivastava, Shivani Raghuvanshi, Bhuvan Arora, Renuka Shahane

Director: Sonam Nair

Synopsis: DUPAHIYA is the story of a village, a motorcycle and a marriage. Banwari Jha (Gajraj Rao) resides in Bihar’s Dhadakpur, which is India's only crime-free village since 24 years. His daughter, Roshni's (Shivani Raghuvanshi) marriage is fixed with Durlabh Tripathi (Godaan Kumar). Durlabh, his father Keshav Prasad (Aaloak Prasad) and younger brother Kuber (Avinash Dwivedi) visit Banwari's residence. Kuber happens to mention that he works in the Income Tax department and is settled in Mumbai. Roshni has always dreamt of leaving the village life and hence, she expresses her desire to marry Kuber instead of Durlabh! As luck would have it, the boy's side agrees but on one condition - they'll want a motorcycle for dowry worth Rs. 3 lakhs along with fuel worth Rs. 2 lakhs. Banwari somehow manages to collect the amount and buys a swanky motorcycle. To keep away the prying eyes of the villagers, he locks the vehicle in the school, where he's the principal. Banwari's son Bhugol (Sparsh Shrivastava) is a 'Reeler', that is, he loves to make Reels. He didn't get a chance to make a video of him on the bike when he was getting it from the showroom. Hence, he sneaks out of the house at night with his friend Teepu (Samarth Mahor) and goes to the farm. While shooting the video, a thief lands all of a sudden and takes away the motorcycle. The next day, Banwari Jha is devastated. He wants to find out who robbed his prized possession but is apprehensive about going to the police station as it'll break Dhadakpur's record of being crime-free. The village chief, Pushpalata (Renuka Shahane), wants the bike to be recovered as soon as possible as Dhadakpur's crime-free status can help her be the next Sarpanch. But the police officer, Mithilesh Kushwaha (Yashpal Sharma), who dislikes the residents of Dhadakpur, is determined to file a complaint in this matter. There's also Amavas (Bhuvan Arora), Roshni's ex-boyfriend who gets sucked into this madness. He's a kleptomaniac and the Banwari fears that he might have robbed the bike to stop Roshni's wedding. What happens next forms the rest of the series.

Dupahiya Story Review: Chirag Garg and Avinash Dwivedi's story has a lot of potential. Chirag Garg and Avinash Dwivedi's screenplay does full justice and they add ample conflicts and funny situations to keep the interest going. Chirag Garg and Avinash Dwivedi's dialogues are the true winners of the show. The humourous moments become laugh riots thanks to the one-liners.

Sonam Nair's direction is splendid. The setting might remind one of PANCHAYAT but it goes ahead with its slapstick humour and one-liners. DUPAHIYA, in short, is PANCHAYAT meets Priyadarshan brand of cinema. A few scenes are absolutely absurd and one doesn’t mind as it raises laughs. For instance, the show begins on an insane note when the girl chooses to marry the brother instead of the prospective groom and even his family agrees. In another scene, a character rings up the electricity board to complain why the electricity hasn’t been cut off! The electricity board staff ‘assures’ the caller that they’ll soon do the needful! The show is full of such crazy scenes and it keeps the interest going. Moreover, the characters have creative names like Durlabh, Amavas, Bhugol, Ghuttan etc and it matches with their personality. The affair between two people named Amavas and Roshni is also an interesting idea. The twist in the tale might be easy to predict but still, it plays out well.

On the flipside, there are too many cinematic liberties and hence, a section of the audience might not completely get involved with the narrative. It’s also bewildering that Banwari didn’t show much urgency after knowing about the bike theft and took his time in taking the next step. The track of Nirmal (Komal Kushwaha) is individually quite interesting but turns out to be the weakest part of the show.

Dupahiya Performances: Gajraj Rao is a pro when it comes to playing such roles and impresses yet again. Sparsh Shrivastava is the surprise of the show and his comic timing is seen to be believed. Here’s an actor who deserves to be seen more, that too in author-backed roles. Shivani Raghuvanshi gets a bit dominated by the rest but maintains her position, nevertheless. Bhuvan Arora is adorable as the die-hard romantic and puts up an impressive act. Renuka Shahane, Yashpal Sharma, Avinash Dwivedi, Mac Lara (Kamlesh; panchayat member and Pushpalata's rival) are very entertaining. Yogendra Tikku (Sarpanch) and Komal Kushwaha lend support. Anjuman Saxena (Malti; Banwari's wife) doesn’t get much scope. Samarth Mahor and Godaan Kumar leave a mark in small roles. Aaloak Prasad, Manoj Singh Tiger (Ghuttan), Smriti Mishra (Amavas's bhabhi), Shriram Jog Dada (Kadak Singh Yadav), Chandan Kumar (Madan Kumar; journalist), Brijendra Kala (Gyanchand), Pranjal Pateriya (Pintu) and Vinod Jewant (Parmaanu Bhai) are decent.

Dupahiya music and other technical aspects: Somesh Saha's title song is catchy. The other two songs that work are 'Saiyaan Ka Chumma' and 'Meri Le Le Photo Va'. Somesh Saha's background score is quirky, just like the show.

Piyush Puty's cinematography is satisfactory. Veera Kapur Ee's costumes and Shraddha V Vasugavade and Prashant Ray's production design are realistic. The action is minimal. Yashashwini Y P's editing is overall fine but the show drags in some scenes and this was avoidable.

Dupahiya Review Conclusion: On the whole, DUPAHIYA is a laugh-a-minute riot and deserves to be watched for its plot, hilarious one-liners, and performances, especially Sparsh Shrivastava of LAAPATAA LADIES fame.

The month of March might seem dry but PVR INOX has come up with interesting strategies to attract more footfalls. Apart from screening new releases like The Diplomat, Mickey 17, Snow White, Kingstone, The Day The Earth Blew Up, Kingston and above all, Sikandar, India’s biggest multiplex chain has also planned re-releases of exciting films. Sanjeev Kumar Bijli, Executive Director, PVR INOX Ltd, spoke exclusively with Bollywood Hungama about it and a lot more.

Sanjeev Kumar Bijli began by saying, “The Oscar film festival will continue. We are highlighting the films that managed to win the Oscars. Unfortunately, Anora didn’t get a censor certificate and hence, it’s not going to come on the big screen in India. But apart from that, The Brutalist, Wicked, Conclave, A Real Pain etc. will continue to be screened at the cinemas. This Women’s Day, we are re-releasing Queen, Fashion and Highway. In fact, there are several re-releases this month like Lootera, Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana, Lamhe, The Karate Kid (1984), Half Girlfriend, Karz and Ghatak. We also have the entire Aamir Khan Film Festival. 12 or 13 of his films will be back on the big screen!”

As per the press statement of PVR Inox, some Aamir Khan films which will be re-released on his birthday are Lagaan, Taare Zameen Par, Rang De Basanti, Dil Chahta Hai and PK. The statement further said that regional classics like Kumbalangi Nights and Sairat will also be re-released.

When asked if the Aamir Khan festival will commence next Friday, March 14, to coincide with his birthday, Sanjeev Kumar Bijli smiled and said, “Yes, that’s the idea.”

Not many are aware that Sanjeev Kumar Bijli and Ajay Bijli were the co-producers of Taare Zameen Par and Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, both of which were also produced by Aamir Khan. When asked about these films and his bond with Aamir Khan over the years, Sanjeev Kumar Bijli replied, “We were fortunate to work on those two films as producers with him. He still remains not just one of the best actors in the industry but also a thought leader. Through his movies like Dangal, 3 Idiots etc., he has pushed the envelope not just in terms of the film’s content but also in terms of promotions and marketing. Hence, it's great to know him and be associated with him. We are very excited to host and curate this film festival.”

Sanjeev Kumar Bijli further talked about how re-releases have been instrumental in getting in more footfalls, “It started more out of necessity. There were fewer films that were released. Looking at the phenomenal response, especially to films like Rockstar, Laila Majnu, Tumbbad, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and now Sanam Teri Kasam. It has given us the confidence to create a separate department in Mumbai that looks after the curation and re-releases of films. It's mostly Hindi and a few regional films which have been re-released. We have barely scratched the surface for English films. The only significant English film which re-released was Interstellar and it did excellent business. We also listen closely to our customers on our social handles. There have been a lot of requests coming in and this is how we have been able to establish a very successful line of programming.”

Meanwhile, speaking about the March Movie Mania initiative, Gautam Dutta, CEO – Revenue and Operations, PVR INOX Limited, said, “At PVR INOX, our mission has always been to create an immersive movie-going experience that goes beyond just watching a film. With March Movie Mania, we are bringing together an electrifying lineup of global blockbusters, iconic classics, and exclusive engagements that celebrate the love for cinema. As we continue to redefine the big-screen experience, we invite audiences to join us for a spectacular month of storytelling, action, and entertainment. March Movie Mania is not just about movies, it’s about the collective joy of cinema, the nostalgia of timeless classics, and the thrill of experiencing cinematic excellence in an unparalleled setting. Whether it’s breathtaking sci-fi visuals, larger-than-life action sequences, or heartwarming narratives, this initiative is our way of honouring the magic of movies. We welcome everyone to be a part of this grand celebration and make unforgettable memories at PVR INOX.”

Actress Ayesha Takia has alleged that her husband, Farhan Azmi, and their 11-year-old son were harassed and threatened in Goa. The incident reportedly took place on Monday night near Candolim Beach, where a large crowd allegedly bullied them for being from Maharashtra. The Goa Police later booked Farhan for allegedly brandishing a licensed firearm during the altercation.

Ayesha Takia’s Allegations Ayesha Takia took to Instagram to share her version of events, claiming that her husband and son faced “a night of horror.” She stated that a mob of nearly 150 people surrounded and tormented them. "My husband and son were brutally bullied and scared for their life as local Goan goons mobbed, threatened, and tormented them for hours," she wrote.

According to the actress, Farhan had called the police for help, but the officers later booked him instead. "The police, in turn, have filed a complaint against Farhan when he was the one who dialed 100 for help," she alleged. Claims of Targeted Harassment Ayesha further stated that the harassment was specifically aimed at them for being from Maharashtra. "The hatred for Maharashtra has reached unbelievable heights in Goa… as they repeatedly cursed Farhan and my son for being from Maharashtra and having a big car," she wrote.

The actress also mentioned that her family possesses video evidence and CCTV footage to support their claims. "We have video proof and evidence, including CCTV footage, which will be shared with competent authorities in due course of time," she added.

Goa Police’s Response Goa Police officials reported that they received a call around 11:15 PM on Monday regarding a fight near Candolim Beach. Upon arrival, they found Farhan Azmi allegedly brandishing his licensed firearm at the rival group. Both parties were taken to the police station but declined to file official complaints against each other.

As per protocol, the individuals involved were asked to undergo a medical examination, but Farhan and the others refused. The police confirmed that Farhan presented a valid arms license and permit to carry his gun in Goa. Farhan Azmi Yet to Respond Despite the allegations made by Ayesha Takia, Farhan Azmi has not issued an official statement regarding the incident. The police investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge in the coming days.

Actors Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR are set to commence filming a highly anticipated dance sequence for War 2 at Yash Raj Studios in Andheri, under the direction of Ayan Mukerji, as revealed by Mid-Day. The shoot, featuring the two stars alongside Kiara Advani, will focus on a climactic dance-off, and is expected to wrap up by March 10.

The idea for the dance-off originated with producer Aditya Chopra, who sought to combine the film’s stylised action with a memorable performance by the two accomplished dancers. Hrithik Roshan will reprise his role as R&AW agent Kabir Dhaliwal, confronting Jr NTR’s antagonist in a hideout, where the dance battle transitions into the climax fight. The actors have undergone 15 days of individual rehearsals to ensure a natural on-screen rivalry, with production designer Amrita Mahal Nakai crafting a grand set and Pritam composing a fast-paced track featuring over 500 dancers. Creative Vision and Set Preparation The dance sequence reflects a thoughtful creative process led by Aditya Chopra, Ayan Mukerji, and choreographer Bosco Martis to elevate War 2’s appeal. The report quoted a source saying “In the sequence, Hrithik, who reprises his role of R&AW agent Kabir Dhaliwal, makes his way to the hideout of the antagonist, portrayed by Jr NTR. What follows is an electrifying dance battle that segues into the climactic fight set-piece.”

The shoot’s scale has prompted strict security protocols to maintain secrecy. The source added, “Knowing that the track will arouse curiosity among fans and the media, Adi has beefed up the security at the location. Phones are not allowed on the set, in a bid to ensure that pictures from the shoot don’t get leaked online. Each unit member has been given a badge to avoid a security breach.”

The film is expected to hit theaters on August 14 this year.

Singer Mika Singh revealed that he didn’t have a positive experience working with actress Bipasha Basu on the crime thriller Dangerous. In a recent interview with Pinkvilla, he accused Bipasha of throwing tantrums during the project and suggested that her current lack of work is a result of her attitude.

Mika made his debut as a producer with the MX Original Dangerous, which starred Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover. The crime thriller was released in 2020.

In the interview, the singer reflected on his ‘unpleasant’ experience of working with Bipasha. Initially, Mika had envisioned the project as a small-scale film, mainly intended to showcase his music.

He mentioned, “Why do you think they’re out of work now? God is watching everything. I liked Karan a lot and wanted to produce a low-budget film—around Rs. 4 crores.”

At that time, Mika couldn’t afford to hire Vikram Bhatt as the director. Instead, he brought him on board as a writer and enlisted Bhushan Patel to direct. The situation changed when Bipasha insisted on being part of the project.

Mika added, “I was considering another actress, but she wanted to be a part of it. The shoot was set in London, and the budget increased from Rs. 4 crores to Rs. 14 crores... And the drama created by Bipasha ensured that I would always regret getting into production. It was a team she was comfortable with, and they were playing a couple, who had to feature in kissing scenes. Suddenly, she was throwing tantrums saying she won’t do this or she won’t do that, etc…”

Mika also mentioned that he never defaulted on their payments, but completing the dubbing process wasn’t easy either. He shared, “Someone always had a sore throat. If it was Bipasha who was sick at one time, it was Karan at another.”

Karan Singh Grover and Bipasha Basu met while filming Alone in 2015. They got married in 2016 and welcomed their first child, a daughter named Devi, in 2022. It has been nearly five years since Bipasha was last seen in an acting role.

Filmmaker Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana is shaping into one of the most ambitious Indian films ever made. Produced by Namit Malhotra, who also leads the Oscar-winning VFX company DNEG, the film aims to redefine Indian cinema on a global scale. In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, Malhotra expressed his vision for Ramayana to be received internationally like Oppenheimer and Forrest Gump. He spoke about the responsibility of bringing this epic story to the world with authenticity and excellence.

Aiming for a Global Impact Malhotra believes Ramayana has the potential to be India’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon moment. “I do not doubt that it does. In fact, it's down to us and how we can actually bring it to the world. And that is where there's a massive responsibility in doing that," he stated. His team is committed to ensuring the film is a landmark production that resonates beyond Indian audiences. Lessons from Past Adaptations Given the mixed reception of previous Ramayana adaptations, including Adipurush, Malhotra and his team are focused on handling the story with care. "That's why we're trying to be very careful and cautious, that we do it with the utmost care and with the utmost sensitivity. Because this opportunity does not come again and again, and it's the moment for India right now," he said. The goal is to present the narrative in a way that honors its cultural significance while making it accessible to global audiences. Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama in a Two-Part Epic Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana features Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, and Yash as Ravana. The ensemble cast also includes Ravi Dubey, Lara Dutta, Sheeba Chaddha, and Arun Govil. The film is planned as a two-part saga, with releases slated for 2026 and 2027. Bringing Indian Storytelling to the World Malhotra’s vision extends beyond domestic success—he wants Indian storytelling to be globally recognized. "I'm keen to not just make India proud but to excite the world about Indian storytelling and really celebrate global cinema together. It's not like we don't like Hollywood films. It's not like we don't see an Oppenheimer and have a great feeling, or a Forrest Gump, or any of these landmark films. Their stories are universal. I believe this is universal too," he explained.

Aadar Jain found himself in the midst of backlash from netizens as videos from his wedding with Alekha Advani went viral on social media. While the latter was already receiving flak for marrying her friend’s former boyfriend, Jain faced the wrath of many for calling his past relationships ‘timepass’. Followed by the same, now, Tara Sutaria’s mother Tina Sutaria has reacted to the statement and shared a note on ‘disrespectful boyfriends’.

Without taking any names, Tina Sutaria opened up about disrespectful behaviour of men, especially boyfriends, insisting that they should only behave the way, they would with their mother or would want other men to behave with their daughters. In the note, she said, “If your boyfriend/husband ever says anything disrespectful to you, tell him to write it down on a piece of paper, get in his car, drive and deliver it to his mother, or simply hand it to his daughter. If he can’t say it to his mother or doesn’t want another man to one day say it to his daughter, he shouldn’t be saying it to you”.

This note comes after a video of Aadar Jain’s wedding speech went viral. While professing his love to Alekha Advani after their wedding, Aadar Jain compared his past relationships wherein he said, “I have always loved her and I have always wanted to be with her. So she sent me on this long journey of 20 years through time-pass. It was worth the wait because I get to marry this beautiful, beautiful woman, who looks like a dream. I love you, and it was worth the wait. It’s a secret, I have always loved her. I have done time pass for four years of my life. But now I’m with you, baby." The statement about demeaning his past relationships hasn’t gone down well with audiences, who lashed out at the actor for being disrespectful to other women who came into his life.

For the unversed, Aadar Jain dated Bollywood actress Tara Sutaria for almost four years with the couple even making it official on social media and also attending family functions. However, they parted ways in 2023, followed by which Jain announced his engagement with Tara’s friend Alekha Advani.

The moviegoing experience at one point was cheaper and far more pleasant. The tickets used to be sold at reasonable prices and shows used to start dot on time as mentioned on the printed ticket, or 5 or at the maximum, 10 minutes late. With the advent of multiplexes, especially PVR cinemas, a new trend began – the shows began commencing 15 minutes late. Many had reservations about this idea but accepted it. Some perennial latecomers even hailed this strategy as they could now finally see a film from the beginning.

But soon, PVR began to stretch this window further. Since a few years, it has been common to see films starting 20 and even 25 minutes late. It angered every section of the viewer, including the late lateefs. Hence, the recent ruling by the Bangalore (Urban) District Consumer Commission was welcomed with open arms. A patron complained that his Sam Bahadur show at PVR, Orion Mall, Bengaluru started 25 minutes late, leading to massive inconvenience in his work life. The consumer court passed the ruling in his favour; it directed PVR Inox to deposit Rs. 1 lakh into a consumer welfare fund and pay Rs. 20,000 to the complainant, Abhishek M R, for the inconvenience and mental agony caused, along with Rs. 8,000 for his legal expenses.

As expected, all the comments over this episode reeks of ‘serves PVR right’ kind of comments. Not a single patron started the #IStandWithPVR or #WeLovePVRAds trend. The reason is simple: No one loves to see ads, that too for nearly half an hour.

Trade and viewers speak up

Girish Johar, producer and film business analyst, said, “As a consumer myself, I believe that it’s a little stretched. 10-15 minutes is also not the best scenario either but it’s still tolerable. Anything beyond that is unfair. But knowing how the economy works in cinemas, I guess they (have their reasons).”

Trade veteran Taran Adarsh remarked, “I understand that the theatres need to make money and pay the bills. But showing so many ads frustrates the viewers and takes away the charm of watching a film. After all, you have come to watch a film, not the ads. Ads are an add-on.”

Trade analyst Atul Mohan explained, “Having 25-minute ads is like testing the patience of the audience. It’s boring to sit through the ads. Also, the audience has learned that if it’s a 7:00 pm show, then it won’t start before 7:15 pm or 7:20 pm. Earlier, in the single screen era, we used to rush to cinemas as we knew that a 3:00 pm should start max by 3:05 pm.”

However, moviegoers and even exhibition sources told us that the duration of the ads depends on the film, the time of the show and whether you’re watching it on the weekends or weekdays. This writer saw Joker: Folie à Deux and Deva at PVR Lower Parel, Mumbai on the first day of their release and the ad duration was different in both instances. For Joker: Folie à Deux, the ads listed 22 minutes while for Deva, the film started 15 minutes late.

That’s not all. This writer also watched the paid preview of The Wild Robot in the same cinema hall. The show time mentioned on the ticket was 5:35 pm and it started at 5:43 pm! As expected, many turned up late and were shocked to see the film had already begun. The latecomers struggled to find their seats in the dark auditorium and it also inconvenienced those who had come early.

Shantanu Joglekar, a regular at PVR Lower Parel, said, “I have faced this problem too. How am I supposed to know beforehand how long the ads would last? Sometimes, I feel like reaching the theatre late but then I also fear – what if I miss the beginning of the film should PVR suddenly not play that many ads?”

Shashank Pandey, a Delhi-based movie buff, agreed, “If it’s a 11:00 am show, the show at PVR will never start before 11:20 am. The theatre is 10 minutes away from my place. Hence, I’d leave my home at 11:00 am and reach the multiplex at 11:10 am. But in a rare instance, when you watch a film on the weekdays and there are only a handful of viewers, then they don’t show that many ads. Once, I missed a few minutes of the film as they started the film earlier.”

The moral of the lesson is: Reach the cinemas on time. If you are lucky, then the film will start earlier. Or else, bear with the advertisements.

Are viewers moving away to other multiplex chains due to the ads?

The complainant mentioned that since the show started late, it led to losses. Shashank could relate with it, “The show starts late and then you also have an interval lasting 15 minutes. And if you add the runtime, it becomes a tiresome affair, especially when you have to go to work after the film.”

Abhinav Kumar, a lawyer in Bengaluru said, “It is common to hear irate viewers going ‘tch tch’, ‘not again, ‘start the film’ when ads keep coming continuously. It gets quite irritating for a professional who wants to watch a film but also has to rush for work. Hence, as a lawyer and an ardent movie buff, I feel extremely satisfied with the decision (of the court). I hope it sets a strong precedent for future judgment in the favour of an aggrieved moviegoer.”

Some patrons confirmed to Bollywood Hungama that they are so fed up with the ads that they now prefer to watch the film in a non-PVR Inox multiplex. Bhavna Naik said, “I live close to PVR Juhu and PVR Lido but I prefer watching films at Gold Cinemas in Santa Cruz and even Sun City in Vile Parle. At least, they start the show on time. Though it takes a while to travel to the cinema hall and back, I still save time had I seen the same film in PVR.” Shantanu Joglekar said, “Other chains don’t charge a lot, the popcorn is cheaper and you also save time.”

Multiplex chains like MovieMax, Mukta A2, Miraj etc. have a policy of starting films on time or 5 minutes late. The interval, however, usually lasts for around 12-15 minutes. A duty manager said, “That’s a standard practice. A moviegoer has to use the washroom and also buy snacks. Hence, we can’t have shorter intervals and nobody minds.”

Shantanu also raised an important point, “There are films which might be running only in PVR Inox cinemas. I have sometimes skipped watching it as the sheer thought of spending more than three hours can be tiring, more so if I have other activities lined up for the day.”

Bhavna Naik also agreed, “It happens to me sometimes. If the film is not that enticing and if it's playing only in PVR, I’d prefer to be at home and watch something on OTT.”

Girish Johar, however, made it clear that the cinema business is not dwindling due to ads, “I don’t think that is the sore point but it definitely adds to the inconvenience. The ticket price and the content of the film also play a major role. If the film turns out well, no one minds and would not even remember that they were bombarded with unnecessary ads. But if the film turns out bad, then they tend to remember all the inconveniences of the experiences. But the ads alone don’t deter people from going to cinemas.”

Taran Adarsh agreed, “Ads don’t deter people. It’s the last thing on people’s minds. People do get exasperated when they reach the auditorium and are bombarded with ads. But that’s not a factor that crosses anyone’s mind while buying the ticket.”

Shashank Pandey also revealed that despite the ads, he prefers PVR over other chains, “In Rajhans, not many ads are shown. But I feel PVR cinema is superior in terms of sound system.”

Exhibitors speak up

The exhibitors also confirmed that the 25-minute practice is harmful for the cinema-going experience. Vishek Chauhan, owner of Roopbani Cinema in Purnia, Bihar, said, “The projector in my theatre is outsourced to Qube. They decide the advertising and it usually lasts for 7-8 minutes. But we never go beyond the show timing. If the show is at 3:30 pm, we try to start the film at that time. I also insist on reducing ads in my cinema as I don’t want to burden my viewers too much since it’s not fair on them.”

Film exhibitor and distributor Akshaye Rathi explained, “This case would have never happened had there been a sensible balance being stuck around how many advertisements to show. If I schedule a show for 6:00 pm and I play ads till 6:05 pm or 6:10 pm, people won’t mind. What started bothering people is that in the case of big-ticket films, some cinemas would play almost 30-35 minutes of ads. That can get quite bothersome, especially for late-night shows. By the time people return home, it’s a ridiculously unearthly hour.”

He continued, “This is not something that should be imposed by the government or the courts, especially since it’s a private sector. Instead, we should plan sensibly as a fraternity.”

The curious case of PSAs

What irked moviegoers was PVR claiming in the Bengaluru case that PVR claimed that it delays starting a film as it plays PSAs, that is public service announcement ads. Ask any person frequenting PVR cinemas and they’ll confirm that such ads are barely shown. Shantanu Joglekar joked, “Are Manyavar Mohey, Malabar Diamonds, Goldmedal and Lyra ads PSAs?”. Abhinav Kumar and Shashank Pandey confirmed, “PSAs are rarely played.”

A duty manager said, “Some people might confuse the government ads as PSAs, that is, the one about the achievements of the state or central government. But that doesn’t come under PSA. At one point, it was common to see such ads. A filmmaker named Devendra Khandelwal was known to make ads that educated viewers about social and other issues. But now, such ads are rarely played in cinemas.”

An industry insider thundered, “PVR shows ads continuously and on top of it, it is lying through its teeth that it shows PSAs. I am glad that the court caught their bluff.” The court observed that out of 17 advertisements shown in the Sam Bahadur show, only two qualified as PSAs.

How the cinema ad economy works

A commercial in PVR nowadays shows brand managers and experts talking about how ads in cinemas are valuable. Experts also confirm this aspect. Those watching films in Mumbai for years will still be familiar with the Gangar Optician commercial. Some might even be recalling the lines mouthed in the ad: “Aap maze se duniya dekhe, aur duniya dekhe aapko”. When an ad, last heard nearly two decades ago, is still etched in people’s minds, it says a lot about this medium.

Akshaye Rathi added to this aspect, “Brands like Manyavar, Vicco Vajradanti etc. have been built out of cinema advertising successfully. Since they have been doing it consistently for years, they obviously get a discounted rate per unit or minute. They also strike annual deals. If some brand asks for ad showcasing in the first week of Pushpa 2 for instance, the cost would be much higher compared to when the deal is around the year. The latter turns out to be a much better strategy for a simple reason. Imagine a brand decides to show ads during a biggie like Laal Singh Chaddha or Dunki. Obviously, they wouldn’t have gotten the value they would have expected out of these films (as they underperformed). On the other hand, those brands that put money on unexpected surprise hits like 12th Fail or Laapataa Ladies would have benefited majorly. Hence, to get the best value out of cinema advertising, we cannot predict which film will get the desired audience. It’s recommended to get a discounted rate and advertise throughout the year.”

He continued, “It’s a medium which is very underrated. Unlike TV, where you can get up and go away or unlike OTT where you can skip, forward or mute, this is a captive medium. When you are in the cinema hall, rarely would a patron say ‘I’d go out for this particular ad and when it’s over, I’ll return to my seat’. It gives you an engaged audience as mostly, the viewer is looking at the screen during the ads, especially if the lights are off. In terms of recall value, all of us remember the Vicco Vajradanti jingle because we heard it in a captivating manner in a cinema hall.”

The way forward

Cinema ads are here to stay and most moviegoers confirm that they don’t mind it. Shantanu Joglekar explained, “Just don’t make it an unending affair.” Atul Mohan suggested, “If a show is at 7:00 pm, the multiplexes should start the ad 10-15 minutes before.”

In defence of PVR, Vishek Chauhan exulted, “To be fined Rs. 1 lakh is an extreme scenario.” However, he also added, “It gives us a lesson that we all should value the time of the people.”

The industry insider sighed, “Sadly, the way PVR lied about showing PSAs and also their plan to challenge the order shows that they are not ready to learn lessons and will continue to harass people with ads with the same intensity.”

Atul Mohan remarked that this case can set a precedent, “The public has now become aware that by complaining to consumer court, they can also get a chance to earn some moolah! It won’t be surprising if more people also file complaints.”

Prajakta Koli, who has always been open about her relationship with Vrishank Kanal, tied the knot with her longtime bae in a dreamy ceremony in Karjat on February 25. Oleander Farms provided the perfect nature backdrop to the couple who have been waiting for this moment. The influencer-turned-actress left her fans enthralled on social media as she shared her first pictures from the wedding.

The marriage ceremony was hosted as per Hindu rituals, and Prajakta Koli, who has already been impressing her social media fam with her trendy and chic outfits, once again left them excited as she opted for an unconventional golden lehenga for the ceremony. Speaking about this look, Prajakta told Vogue, “My bridal trousseau was the first thing I had ‘planned’ way before we started planning the wedding. A few years ago, I did a campaign with Anita and told her: ‘Whenever I get married, I want to wear this lehenga’. And about a month into my engagement in November 2023, I went to the Anita Dongre Rewild fundraiser at the City Palace in Jaipur and we spoke about it. Anita was most gracious she made a custom piece for me.”

It was rounded off with two dupattas and Anita Dongre jewellery”. Meanwhile, Vrishank Kanal too looked suave in his ivory attire.
