Legendary actor Mithun Chakraborty turned 73 yesterday. He has acted in over 350 movies in a career spanning close to 50 years. Known the most for films like Disco Dancer and Agneepath, he continues to be active in films. He was a pivotal part in last year’s blockbuster The Kashmir Files. Just before Mithun Chakraborty’s special day, we spoke to his son Mahaakshay aka Mimoh Chakraborty on how it has been growing up with an evergreen star.

How are you planning to celebrate Mithunda’s birthday? Dad… you know how low-profile he is. He doesn’t celebrate his birthday at all. He strictly tells us not to wish him, no celebration, etc. But we don’t listen to him. We call him at midnight and sing “Happy Birthday”. But when he is in Mumbai, we insist that he cook for us. That is something we look forward to on his birthday.

As a child, what were your first impressions of your father? As a child my first impression of my dad was that he was always super-busy. Would you believe, he used to do as many as six shifts per day? Six projects on the floor on the same day! To each he would give two hours. So he was always on the move, whether in Mumbai or out of the city. So my brother and I would hardly ever see him. But when we did see him, we used to be very scared of him. He had this intimidating personality. Dad was Dad! Like mom was always mom, cuddly and affectionate. Today, touchwood, dad and I the best of friends. We’ve adult conversations. Back then we were very scared of him.

When did you become aware that he was a major star. Did you have first-hand experiences of your father being mobbed? See, we always knew dad was an actor, a superstar and a legend. And we’ve seen him first-hand being mobbed left, right and centre by his fans. But even today, when you ask me this, for us it’s never been like, “Oh he is a superstar!”. We know how much people love and respect him. But for us he has always been a dad. An achiever no doubt. But not Mithun Chakraborty, the superstar. Dad is dad.

When did you first watch his films and which are your favourites? I am sure you liked him best in Disco Dancer when you were a child I don’t remember at what age I started watching his films. He was already doing a whole lot of films while we were kids. Of course, I love Disco Dancer. But my favourite film of dad is Phool Aur Angaaray. I don’t know why I have a soft corner for that particular film. I remember watching the film 10-15 times at the trials before it was released. Somehow, the movie was fixated in my head. In the second-half when he has this Terminator look with jelled hair and the leather jacket out to take revenge… the coolest action hero.

Since he was doing multi- shifts when you were born, did you get to spend enough time with him as a child? We did not get to spend that much time with him. He was working his ass off for us. Even today he is doing everything for us. I remember when we were young and waiting for him to come home, dad had this habit of ringing the doorbell twice. Whenever the doorbell rang twice, we knew dad was home. Back then, we couldn’t understand why we didn’t have more time with him. Now we know.

Is Mithun da a disciplinarian? Or did he pamper you and your siblings silly? Dad was always a balanced father. Right remains right and wrong remains wrong. It doesn’t change for his children. He’s never over-protected or pampered us. He is a balanced father with me and my three siblings.

Does it become a burden sometimes to be known as Mithun Charaborty's son? I don’t think the privilege of being Mithun Chakraborty’s son would ever be a burden. Today also people tell me, “Dada ke hum fan hain. Unki filmein dekh kar bade hue.” It is such an honour. We are always reminded of his achievements. It feels like such a blessing to be one of his children. I thank my parents for this. And please understand, there is no entitlement to my career because of whose son I am. I am just thankful for having the parents that I do. If you ask me next year or ten years from now what it feels like to be my father’s son, the answer will remain the same: it is and it will always be a blessing.

Your birthday wish? My birthday wish for my dad? It’s my dream and my life’s purpose to make him proud. I want to say thank you for all the love he has given us. It is my wish to keep pushing myself to make him proud.

Prabhas starrer Adipurush released in theatres on June 16, 2023. The film also stars Kriti Sanon, Saif Ali Khan and Sunny Singh in pivotal roles. While the film has opened in cinemas all over the globe, there have been incidents over security reasons and even screening delays. Cinegoers in Telangana vandalized a theatre after the screening of the film was delayed.

A video has gone viral on the internet from Jyothi Cinema in Telangana’s Sangareddy city. Some were heard chanting “Jai Shri Ram” in the background while some throwing things at the glass window panes. The cinegoers vandalized the theatre after the screening was delayed by 40 minutes allegedly due to issue with the sound system. A case was registered and the police is currently investigating the incident.

Adipurush is directed by Om Raut and produced by T-Series, Bhushan Kumar & Krishan Kumar, Om Raut, Prasad Sutar, and Rajesh Nair of Retrophiles, Pramod, and Vamsi of UV Creations.

The film Murder (2004) is credited to have made erotica mainstream in Bollywood. But 10 months before the release of this film, Khwahish (2003) arrived in cinemas and surprised people with its content. It starred Himanshu Malik in the lead and is said to be the debut film of Mallika Sherawat. As Khwahish completed 20 years on June 6, Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to Himanshu Malik about working on this film and a lot more.

How did you bag the film? The director, Govind Menon, was an old friend. This was the time when I had just worked in Tum Bin (2001), a year before. It had done really well. The makers of Khwahish were looking to do a fresh film and they had a good script in hand. My current producer, Akbar Arabiyan, was also the producer of Khwahish. That’s how I know him.

It was a passion project. We were all very driven. Govind had just done his filmmaking course in the USA. He had some fresh, interesting ideas. Khwahish was ahead of its time in certain ways. It showed how youth engage with relationships and that’s why it created a flutter.

Khwahish was one of the first films or maybe the first film that showed a character hesitating to buy a condom. 20 years have passed but this aspect is shown in films even today. The recent release Jogira Sara Ra Ra (2023) also had a similar scene… Yes. The characters in the film discussed sex openly. This happens in every relationship but it was never shown on celluloid before. It was an era of Yash Raj and Karan Johar films. Everything then was soaked in buttery, sugary syrup. That is what stood out in Khwahish and we got noticed and remembered.

The belief that it had 17 kisses in the film must have also helped in generating awareness and hype… It was quite unprecedented. Now they show much more. But at that time, we were petrified that due to the kisses, the Censor Board might refuse certification. There was a lot of anxiety among us. At that time, if a hero and heroine would kiss, the makers would cut to birds flying or flowers dashing. A Yash Raj or Karan Johar film had not shown a kiss till then. It was very brave of the makers to go for it.

But were there as many as 17 kisses in the film? I happen to count and I feel the number of kisses was lesser… I don’t know who came up with the idea. I guess 17 kisses toh nahin the. Some journalist had mentioned it. The connotation became that it had a lot of kisses. Then all the idiotic discussions began that whether a peck on the lips is a kiss or a forehead kiss is also counted as a kiss! Nevertheless, the word spread that the film has such content.

Did the Censors cut any scene? No. We went through the process smoothly. They didn’t ask for a cut and got an ‘A’ certificate.

How was it to work with Mallika Sherawat? She wasn’t fun to work with. It was her first major film. She was extremely anxious. It was a slow process. She needed more and more rehearsals and more and more takes. As a co-actor, it became extremely exhausting. You want your best take to be there and you also want your co-actor to do the same. It’s a team effort. When I did Khwaish, I was two-films-old. I knew the process and the pressures of being on a film set. Also at that time, we used to shoot on film. Each rejected take meant money wasted.

Salman Khan is back with Bigg Boss and this time he is hosting the OTT version. The first season was hosted by Karan Johar. The launch event took place on Friday, June 16.

Salman recently spoke about his expectations from the second season of Bigg Boss OTT and said, “I always look forward to Bigg Boss. First time on Bigg Boss OTT. I hope it is not too uncensored and unfiltered, and if it is, then I will control it myself. The show should run keeping in mind our culture and that’s why I am a part of Bigg Boss OTT. Actually, Karan (Johar) and Farah (Khan) were not available, that’s why I had to do Bigg Boss OTT.”

He added, “Main OTT par bhi aise kuch hone nahi dunga joh humare khilaf aur humare culture ke khilaf ho. Main nahi hone dunga (I will not allow anything against our culture on the show).”

When asked if there's any difference between TV and OTT platforms, he said, “I don’t find any difference. The type of OTT content you are talking about, I anyways don’t do that kind of stuff and I don’t like it. I think now there are guidelines for OTT, after which OTT has improved.”

He further said, “I have a friend who did not tell me he is participating in the show. I was shocked looking at him on the stage. His name is Niketan Madhok.”

For the past few days, the Deol house is buzzing with excitement as Sunny Deol is all set to welcome his daughter-in-law. Talking about the wedding on June 18, a source was quoted by Hindustan Times saying, “All the functions will be held at Taj Lands End, but the haldi ceremony took place at their house only. That’s because they wanted some functions at home for that wedding vibe. Everyone was waiting for this day, and now that it has come they are busy making sure the arrangements are done well so that they can enjoy it.”

Adipurush is expected to be a retelling of Ramayana and is directed by Om Raut. The film also stars Kriti Sanon as Janaki, Saif Ali Khan as Lankeshwar, Devdatta Nage as Bajrang, and Sunny Singh as Laxmanan. The film is expected to release on June 16 in multiple languages including Hindi, Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil, and Telugu.

As for Prabhas, apart from Adipurush, he has some interesting projects like Project K with Amitabh Bachchan and Deepika Padukone, Salaar with Shruti Hasan and Prithviraj Sukumaran, Spirit with Director Sandeep Reddy Vanga and an untitled film with Maruti in the pipeline.

In the year 2006, the Mika Singh and Rakhi Sawant controversy kick-started with the reality show star and actress taking legal action and registering an FIR against the ‘Sawan Mein Lag Gayi Aag’ singer for forcibly kissing her at his birthday party. The musician was charged under sections 354 for molestation and section 323 of assault as per the Indian Penal Code. Followed by the same, while the case has been in limbo for years, the Bombay High Court has finally quashed the case after Rakhi submitted an affidavit of consent.

Earlier this year, Rakhi Sawant, who was in news for her divorce with Adil Khan, surprised many by posing with Mika Singh outside a coffee shop. The actress-dancer insisted that they are now on cordial terms and was seen hugging it out, after which Mika moved the court to dismiss the charges against him and quash the chargesheet filed against him by the Mumbai police. Justices A S Gadkari and S G Dige observed that Rakhi Sawant in her affidavit, had maintained that she has ‘amicably resolved’ all her ‘differences and realised the entire dispute had arisen due to misunderstanding and misconception’ on their part. Followed by the same, the court has dismissed all the charges filed against the singer.

For the unversed, Mika Singh had invited Rakhi Sawant to attend his birthday party in 2006 and had warned his friends to refrain from smearing cake on his face. Rakhi, allegedly, did not pay heed to it and continued to smear the cake on Mika’s face. As per the singer, in order to ‘teach her a lesson’ he had forcibly kissed her. Many photos and videos from the party had later made to the media. The FIR against the singer was registered on June 11, 2006.

In a dramatic turn of events, the release of Om Raut’s highly anticipated mythological epic drama Adipurush was earlier stalled in Nepal by the Nepal Censor Board after they took objection to the dialogue which says that Goddess Sita was India’s daughter. According to the board, Sita was born in Nepal. But as per a latest update, the board has allowed the film to be screened in Nepal after the makers of Adipurush decided to remove the dialogue from the film, which is releasing worldwide tomorrow on June 16.

The initial news came out when journalist Rahul Raut took to Twitter and said, “The Nepal government has objected to the scene where the film claims Goddess Sita was the daughter of India, whereas she was actually BORN IN NEPAL. The Censor Board has decided not to release it there until the makers correct the error!”

But moments later, he posted another tweet which read, “UPDATE!! #Adipurush is now releasing in Nepal... Popular TV star Avneet Kaur is making her Bollywood debut with the upcoming comedy-drama Tiku Weds Sheru. Directed by Sai Kabir Srivastav, the film is the maiden project of Kangana Ranaut's production house, Manikarnika Films, also making it their first collaboration with the streaming service Prime Video. Tiku Weds Sheru stars acclaimed actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui along with actor Avneet in the titular role. At the launch of the trailer on Wednesday, Kaur got emotional and said she has worked really hard for her debut.

Avneet Kaur shared, “This is very special to me. I was just crying while watching the trailer. Just to say that, it’s my debut, and getting to do my first film with Nawaz sir and Kangana ma’am, is extremely big for me. When I got to know about this project, and when ma’am chose me as her Tiku, that was so special for me. I just wanted to prove, that I can and I will do justice to this character, because I know, Tiku is so close to her heart. The story is so close to her heart.”

Tiku Weds Sheru follows the journey of two eccentric and starry-eyed characters - a dreamer Tiku (Avneet) and a hustler Sheru (Nawazuddin). The trailer showcases the ups and downs in the lives of this unconventional couple, a junior artist and an aspiring actor, who begin their mad-cap journey as they hustle together to achieve their ambitions in the city of dreams, Mumbai. What started as the coming together of an unusual jodi, becomes the marriage of two souls.

Gulshan Devaiah has started shooting for his upcoming film Ulajh. The movie has Janhvi Kapoor and Roshan Mathew as his co-stars. Since the movie is about Indian Foreign Services (IFS), the major portion of the shoot is expected to be done in various foreign locations.

Sharing his reaction on the commencement of the film’s shoot, Gulshan said in a statement, “It’s been a good year for me so far and Ulajh has a great cast put together and I’m really looking forward to filming this film with them. To say the least it’s a complicated part that I’m playing in this one.”

The movie, which is directed by National Award winner Sudhanshu Saria and produced by Junglee Pictures, follows the journey of a young IFS officer, played by Janhvi Kapoor, and the ups and downs that she goes through. It also has Rajesh Tailang, Meiyang Chang, Sachin Khedekar, Rajendra Gupta and Jitendra Joshi in pivotal roles.

When the movie was announced last month, director Sudhanshu Saria had said, “In their typical fashion, Junglee Pictures has picked yet another original, bold and daring film to bring to audiences and I’m so thrilled they’ve entrusted me with the task of helming it. In Janhvi Kapoor, the film has found its beating heart and it’s going to be a treat for audiences to watch her spar with thespians like Rajesh Tailang and Sachin Khedekar, maverick actors like Gulshan Devaiah, Roshan Matthews and Meiyang Chang. We have a rollercoaster of a ride planned for our audience and I can’t wait to start rolling cameras on Ulajh.”

Recreating a portion of Mahabharata with his next, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra is expected to be planning to retell the folklore of an epic saga with Karna. Going by recent reports it seems that the filmmaker is keen on Suriya playing the lead role. We hear that the actor too is keen on playing the role and is in advanced talks with the Rang De Basanti filmmaker for the same.

As per a Pinkvilla report, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra was keen on roping an experienced actor to essay this complex character. A source was quoted in these reports saying, “Karna is Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s dream project and he has been working on the subject for a while now. The filmmaker as also his producer partners believe that the film has potential to be a game changer in India as no one has attempted a film on such a complex protagonist till date. The character traits warranted a great actor who can slip from one zone to the other, and who better than Suriya to do the same.”

Needless to say, the film will be a Pan India venture that will release in multiple languages. The source also revealed that the film will be a two-part series and that Suriya too is quite keen on coming on board. “Suriya and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra have been in talks for Karna for a while now and it’s all moving in the right direction. Suriya is very excited to be a part of the two-part epic with Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. It’s a historical set in the Mahabharata times with Suriya playing one of the most complex characters of his career – Karna,” the source added.

If all goes well, this will mark Suriya and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s first collaboration. As of now, Suriya is busy with the shoot of the ambitious film Kanguva which also stars Disha Patani.

In a shocking turn of events, producer Sajid Nadiadwala along with his director Nitesh Tiwari and the actors, Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor have decided to bring their next, Bawaal, on direct to digital platform. Sources close to the production houses have confirmed that Bawaal is slated to be a direct to digital release on Amazon Prime Video.

"Bawaal is among the most ambitious films by Sajid Nadiadwala that rides on a subject that doesn't exactly have the commercial trappings of dance and music. In the present market scenario. Sajid, who has a knack of commercial cinema, feels that it's best to bring Bawaal on direct to digital, rather than risking a theatrical outing. He has got a great deal from digital players and decided to part ways with the original plans of bringing it in theatres," a source close to the development told Bollywood Hungama.

The film will now release in October on Amazon Prime Video and an official announcement shall be made soon. "Sajid got into conversation with his actors, Varun and Janhvi, and it's only after having all been on the same page did he take this call. The entire team believes that Bawaal will win over the audience's love on OTT. The film is a poetry in motion and is expected to reach out to an even wider audience base on digital medium, which might not have been possible with theatrical release. The idea is to go global with Bawaal and Amazon is the perfect partner for that reach," the source further told us.

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Bawaal is produced by Sajid Nadiadwala and is slated to see a direct to digital release on Amazon Prime. The movie stars Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor in lead, and is set against the world war 2 backdrop.

Gadar – Ek Prem Katha (2001) is not just one of the biggest hits of Indian cinema but a film that continues to be loved and consumed regularly, even after 22 years of its release. When it arrived in cinemas on June 15, 2021, it created a frenzy in cinemas. Hence, it was shocking when Sunny Deol dropped the bomb that before the release, there were apprehensions in the industry about its box office prospects. Distributors shied away from buying it while some suggested that it seems like a ‘Punjabi film’! Sunny Deol opened about up about this aspect at the re-release premiere of Gadar – Ek Prem Katha, held in Mumbai on Friday, June 9.

Sunny Deol said, "Jab Gadar – Ek Prem Katha lagi, tab humein nahin pata tha ki yeh film gadar machayegi (smiles). People used to say, 'Yeh Punjabi film hai. Isse Hindi mein dub karo'. Some distributors said, 'Main toh nahin kharidunga yeh film'. So we did face a lot of issues. Lekin janta ko film itni pasand aayi ki unhone sab ka munh bandh karwa diya! Unhone hi humein himmat di hai ki hum part 2 banayein."

Gadar – Ek Prem Katha was re-released on June 9 across the country as the sequel, Gadar 2, is all set to hit cinemas on August 11 this year. Just like the first part, Gadar 2 also stars Sunny Deol, Ameesha Patel and Utkarsh Sharma.

A discussion on Gadar – Ek Prem Katha with Sunny Deol is incomplete without the mention of the iconic hand pump scene. When Sunny was asked if he’ll once again lift the hand pump to beat the baddies, Sunny Deol joked, "Iss baar in logon ne saare hand pumps chhupa diye. Pehle se hi nikaal diye!"

Just last month on May 26 it was announced that Shahid Kapoor had been roped in to feature as the male lead in Malayalam director Rosshan Andrrews next. The film, which will be a collaboration between Roy Kapur Films and Zee Studios, is said to be an action thriller that will see Shahid sharing screen space with Pooja Hegde. Interestingly, Bollywood Hungama has learnt that for the yet-untitled venture, Shahid has decided on taking a cut in his fee. In fact, if what the grapevine says is true then Shahid who charged a whopping Rs. 40 cr. for his recent release Bloody Daddy has taken a cut of nearly Rs. 15 cr. for the Rosshan Andrrews venture.

Revealing details a well-placed industry source tells Bollywood Hungama, “Shahid Kapoor has been at the top of his game. With the success of Farzi and of course now Bloody Daddy being released, it does come as a surprise that Shahid would take a pay cut. Compared to Bloody Daddy for which Shahid charged a whopping Rs. 40 cr, for this untitled venture he has taken a cut of Rs. 15 cr. Shahid has charged just Rs. 25 cr. for the film.”

Interestingly, the source points out that with Shahid Kapoor deciding to slash his fee others in the industry will also have to follow suit. “With Shahid deciding to slash his fees, most other actors as well will have to re-evaluate their remunerations. Filmmakers and producers are going to cite Shahid as an example.”

Bollywood actor Shahid Kapoor in a recent interview made an appeal to the audience from the southern region to embrace Hindi films. He expressed his desire for the Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada audience to reciprocate the same acceptance that Hindi films receive from the Hindi-speaking audience. Kapoor emphasized the need for a mutual exchange, encouraging viewers from the south to explore and watch Hindi movies.

Talking to Bollywood Spy, Shahid said, “The Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada audience should also watch Hindi films just as how the Hindi audience has accepted your films with an open heart, you all should also accept our films. Only then the cinema will grow, the audience should be open, and there should be acceptance from every quarters.”

Citing the example of IPL, Shahid added, “I feel everybody should work with everybody because when you watch the IPL, as an example, there is a team from every state. There are also fifteen extra players sitting on the bench and waiting, and players are being prepared that way. So, when the Indian team is being made, you must have seen now how there is an India A squad and India B squad. Why do we have that? We had the power to go to the B squad also because we have so many good players. That only happens because everybody is coming together to add more value, so films should also be like that, everybody should come together to add more value so more people go to the theatres. But everybody should have the same attitude.”

He further added, “Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, our filmmakers were not able to shoot abroad for their big-scale action films, therefore such films were not released for some time… But otherwise, from Hindi cinema’s standpoint of action films, our biggest superstars, whether it is Salman Khan or Akshay Kumar, or whether it is Aamir Khan in Ghajini, I think we have made very good action films. Hrithik Roshan is very, very good in action, War was fantastic.”

Meanwhile on the film, Shahid Kapoor starrer Bloody Daddy released today on JioCinema which was helmed by Ali Abbas Zafar. He was previously seen in Raj & DK helmed web series Farzi that is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. He will be soon seen alongside Kriti Sanon in an untitled Maddock film. The poster of the film is out and is expected to release in October.

Hungama was a 2003 Bollywood comedy film directed by Priyadarshan. The movie featured an ensemble cast including Akshaye Khanna, Paresh Rawal, Aftab Shivdasani, Rimi Sen, and Rajpal Yadav. In an exclusive video interview with Bollywood Hungama, Rajpal Yadav recollected his memory of late writer-director Neeraj Vora. He said, “One day I and Paresh Rawal were missing Neeraj Vora sir a lot. We agreed that Neeraj Vora’s writing was blessed.” Recollecting the famous dialogue from the film, “Chalu mandir ka ghanta samaj ke rakha hai kya, koi bhi aake baja jaata hai’” Yadav said, “The better Neeraj ji had written it, the better Priyadarshan ji got it performed in the film.”

Further sharing his favourite scene from Partner, Yadav stated, “Because of Chota Don (his character name in the film), I was feeling so proud of myself in Fiji. I felt like even if I take 100 births in Bollywood, I can't repay its debt. Because there is one Don Amitabh Bachchan, then Don 2 Shah Rukh Khan and then one Chota Don Rajpay Yadav,” the actor laughed.

While Rajpal Yadav's talent has undoubtedly earned him a loyal fan base, there is a consensus among cinephiles that he deserves more recognition and opportunities to showcase his range as an actor. Apart from Akshay Kumar, the film also features Yami Gautam, Pankaj Tripathi, Arun Govil and Aamir Naik in pivotal roles.

Last year on December, Akshay had made his presence felt at the Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia where he shared an interesting detail about his upcoming film. He had revealed while having a conversation with moderator Kaleem Aftab that one of his forthcoming films talks about the importance of sex education. Akshay had stated, "It’s a very important subject. In a lot of places, (sex education) is not there. We have all kinds of subjects we learn in school and sex education is one topic I would like all the schools in the world to have. (This film is) going to take time to release, it’s going to be April [or] May.”

Talking about her marriage, Sonnalli had earlier told Hindustan Times, “Ashesh and I were very sure about having a very simple wedding with people who mean something to us. It’s a very private moment for us. It is what both our mothers wanted and we feel glad that we could do it for them. We really look forward to exploring this new phase of our life together.”

Under a beautiful floral canopy, Sonnalli had appeared exquisite in a pink saree as she was accompanied by her friends and family members to the wedding venue. Adding to her ensemble, she had adorned silver kaleeras and silver-diamond jewellery. Notably, she had even brought her dog along, who was stylishly dressed in pink attire.
