Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham

The 2001 release, directed by Karan Johar, is about a brother going beyond the limits to get his elder brother back home. Seeing Hrithik Roshan and Shah Rukh Khan as on-screen brothers was indeed a delight for many. The film is an example that years and distance cannot make a difference in your bond with your brother/sister.

Hum Saath Saath Hain

When it comes to family drama, especially focusing on siblings' relationships, you can’t miss looking at Sooraj Barjatya’s filmography. This 1999 release is loosely based on Ramayan. Mohnish Bahl, Salman Khan and Saif Ali Khan are in the lead while Neelam Kothari plays their on-screen sister.

Dil Dhadakne Do

The star-studded ensemble cast of Dil Dhadakne Do lead by Zoya Akhtar embarks on a 10-day cruise to celebrate an anniversary. While the film touches on a handful of aspects of a typical upper-class Indian family, Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh give major sibling goals.

Iqbal

Nagesh Kukunoor's 2005 film Iqbal stars Shreyas Talpade as the title character, a deaf and mute youngster who relies on his sister, Shweta Prasad, for communication. She encouraged him to pursue his desire to play cricket and earn a spot on the Indian national team.

Raksha Bandhan

The Anand L Rai directorial is one of the latest editions from Bollywood to this niche genre. The film revolves around Lala Kedarnath, the eldest and only brother of 4 sisters, and his relentless efforts of getting his sisters married. The film had received a decent response from the audience.

Another Diwali box-office clash is awaited at the box office. Starring Akshay Kumar in the lead role, Ram Setu will face off Ajay Devgn’s Thank God. This marks his second clash this year after Raksha Bandhan clashed at the box office with Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha in August. Akshay Kumar addresses Ram Setu’s box-office clash with Ajay Devgn’s Thank God: ‘Fans will choose to watch the one that appeals to them the most’

In an interview with Hindustan Times, the actor said, “There is no clash. Let’s not refer to it as that. They are two films, with different appeals, releasing on the same day. It’s happened in the past and it will happen in the future. Fans will choose to watch the one that appeals to them the most or better still, watch both. The main objective is for our fans to enjoy the festival at the movies with friends and family.”

The story of Ram Setu revolves around an atheist archaeologist turned believer, Dr. Aryan Kulshrestha (Akshay Kumar), who must race against time to prove the true existence of the legendary Ram Setu before evil forces destroy the pillar of India’s heritage. The actor said that the film is rooted in Indian culture. “Ram Setu is very proudly rooted in Indian history and culture. On the factual side, the team has relied on deep research to represent what is true and bring out several unknown facts. On the spiritual, sentimental side, we have not only remained emotionally respectful, but I can assure you that the values and beliefs associated with Shri Ram and Ram Setu are being uniquely upheld,” he added.

With Akshay Kumar in the lead, the film also stars Satyadev Kancharana, Nushrratt Bharuccha, Jacqueline Fernandez and M. Nasser in primary roles.

Hollywood star Quintessa Swindell is currently seen as Cyclone in the movie Black Adam which opened in theatres this Friday. The actress, who is a non-binary transgender actor, plays the superhero who has the power to manipulate wind. The film marks one of the first times a transgender actor has been roped in for one of the pivotal roles in the DC Universe. In a loft in Downtown Los Angeles, Quintessa Swindell hopped on a zoom call around 8 in the morning donning a comfy jumper and bandana for a conversation with Bollywood Hungama.

EXCLUSIVE: Black Adam star Quintessa Swindell on working with Dwayne Johnson – “He just feels like my brother”

The actress revealed that she previously knew Dwayne Johnson, who plays the titular role in Black Adam, through his sister as they studied in the same school. She said. “With DJ (Dwayne Johnson), whenever he was on set, it was the feeling like let's f***ing nail it and do an incredible job. He just feels like my brother and I went to school with his sister. So the fact that I'm now on set working with him, and I'm also seeing his sister visit on set, and I was like ‘Bri, look at me! I am working with your brother!’ It was truly so insane and so inspiring. And the conversations I've had with are just like life changing – on set, off set, post production – very inspiring.”

Swindell, who studied theater at Marymount Manhattan before dropping out to pursue acting in Los Angeles, says that DC has it on lock when it comes to making these tentpole projects. “Our director is such a visionary, and the way that he's crafted a superhero film and made it ask big questions, especially questions that pertain to like freedom, especially in today's world, and who has the right to freedom and to liberate themselves and I think those are things that are coming quite frequently now and have always been, and I haven't seen, like a superhero film, really put that in front of you and like, really question it – ‘Are the superheroes actually in the right?’”

Quintessa mentioned that Dwayne Johnson was quite good at balancing out the duality in Black Adam. “Dwayne is incredible at balancing that duality and being that figure to really pose that question. And all of us being there to support it, too, and we're all asking those questions ourselves as like our characters. So yeah, the main takeaway is like we got it. Don't worry, literally do not worry.”

Black Adam’s screenplay is written by Adam Sztykiel and Rory Haines & Sohrab Noshirvani, based on characters from DC, based on characters created by Bill Parker and C.C. Beck. The film’s producers are Beau Flynn, Dwayne Johnson, Hiram Garcia and Dany Garcia, with Walter Hamada, Adam Schlagman, Richard Brener, Dave Neustadter, Chris Pan, Eric McLeod, Geoff Johns and Scott Sheldon executive producing.

Black Adam is directed by Jaume Collett-Serra. The film released in theatres on October 21 in English, Hindi, Tamil & Telugu.

The advance booking of Ram Setu and Thank God has begun since a few days. But several single-screen cinemas have not yet got the go-ahead to open the bookings. According to the sources in the exhibition sector, the show sharing issues have cropped up. This has become a common occurrence when two big films clash at the box office. What has added to the woes this time is that the festival of Diwali will be celebrated tomorrow while Ram Setu and Thank God will arrive a day after, on Tuesday, October 25. The exhibitors were hoping to sell tickets by now and thereby enjoy the Diwali festival. But with advance booking kept on hold in these cinemas, the exhibitors are angered lot.

EXPLOSIVE Manoj Desai THUNDERS as he’s not allowed to open bookings for Ram Setu and Thank God in Maratha Mandir “Inki wajah se Diwali pe hum toh barbaad ho hi rahe hai. Main chahta hoon ki yeh log bhi barbaad ho jaaye”

Manoj Desai, executive director, G7 multiplex and Maratha Mandir Cinema, has often raised his voice against this practice. When Bollywood Hungama spoke to him to ask why he hasn’t begun bookings in Maratha Mandir, he didn’t mince words as he talked about his situation.

He said, “The issue is not just in Maratha Mandir. It has happened in many single screen cinemas across the country. We have been told not to open bookings kyunki pehle woh multiplex ko sambhalna chahte hai. Inki wajah se Diwali pe hum toh barbaad ho hi rahe hai. Main chahta hoon ki yeh log bhi barbaad ho jaaye. The films are releasing on Tuesday. It’s Sunday evening and we are still not allowed to open bookings. Nothing can be more unfortunate and shameful.”

When asked about the problem, he replied, “Ram Setu’s distributors are asking for more shows. Even Thank God’s distributors are making the same demand. Dono andar hi andar jhagad rahe hai. Aur isme hum phans gaye.”

When can we expect the advance bookings to begin in Maratha Mandir? Manoj Desai sighed, “I asked the same question just the same time back to Vinay Choksey of Aum Enterprise, who is the booker of our theatre. He told me, ‘Let the multiplex show sharing issue resolve. Kal sochte hai kya karna hai’. Can you imagine?”

He continued, “I had planned to give 2 shows to Ram Setu and 2 shows to Thank God in Maratha Mandir. But Ram Setu’s distributors are not satisfied. They are asking for 3 shows and that we should give just 1 show to Thank God. Those who make such demands, their films never work. Satyanaash ho in logon ka!”

Meanwhile, he has been allowed to start bookings of both the films in Gaiety-Galaxy aka G7 multiplex. There were murmurs that even Black Adam’s distributors might ask for certain shows since its performance has been decent over the weekend. But Manoj Desai clarified, “There’s no problem with regards to Black Adam. It’s only due to Ram Setu and Thank God’s distributors that we are suffering”

Manoj Desai has often given thunderous statements but this time, one can sense that his anger levels have gone considerably up. He rued, “Yeh log single screen theatre ko latka dete hai. So many single screens are shutting down. With great difficulty, I am running this theatre.”

He signed off by saying, “This is not the first time. It has happened in the case of so many films. We are fed up.”

Actress Kriti Sanon marked her debut along with Tiger Shroff with their 2014 release Heropanti. It is worth mentioning that before trying her luck in Bollywood, the actress made a name for herself in Telugu film industry. And now, there is no going back for her, given that she has delivered a bunch of noteworthy films. Though her acting career is only eight-year-old, the actress has donned numerous characters. However, do you know she once struggled to remember the name of an established actor, who played her on-screen father?

When Bhediya star Kriti Sanon could not remember the name of her own on-screen father

During her interview with Bollywood Hungama back in 2015, Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon had played a fun quiz round. For the same, we had asked the Dilwae duo to take the compatibility test. We asked them questions about each other. However, the first round tied between them as both of them gave 4 answers right out of 5.

Later, in the bonus question, we asked Varun to tell the name of the actor who played the character of Kriti’s dad in her first music video, ‘Chal Wahan Jaate Hain’. Though both of them were able to recall the works of the mentioned actor, they struggled to state his name. Well, it was Rajesh Khatter, actor Ishaan Khatter’s dad.

Talking about her professional front, Kriti is gearing up for the release of Bhediya. The creature comedy will also feature Varun Dhawan. Directed by Amar Kaushik, it is slated to hit the theatres on November 25.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali: "The film industry lost its brightest light this year. With Latabai gone just a few months ago, Diwali doesn't seem festive this year."

Diwali 2022: From Saif Ali Khan to Janhvi Kapoor here’s what Bollywood stars have planned for the festival

Saif Ali Khan: “A small puja with the family at home, and there is a dinner on 23 October with the Kapoors and Khans, my wife Kareena’s family and my family.”

Janhvi Kapoor: “It’s a working Diwali for me. I am prepping in cricket training, promoting my film Mili, and shooting.”

Taapsee Pannu: “I am spending Diwali with my family here in Mumbai this time. So it’s time for rangolis, deeyas, prayers and a full-on feast at home.”

Hema Malini: “Diwali is always with the family for me. I wish everyone would do the same. Be home with the family and keep the country safe from crime at least for one day devoted to light and happiness.”

Neil Nitin Mukesh: “I am in Kanpur with the whole family to celebrate Diwali with my sister Neha. It is my daughter Nurvi’s first Diwali in Kanpur, so extra-special.”

Urmila Matondkar: “I absolutely love the Festival of Lights. Love it more for lights, diyaas and sweets not as much for the noisy crackers. Hopefully people will consider their surroundings, environment, etc. and use crackers sensibly.”

Swara Bhaskar: “Since there has been a death in the family, there will be no celebration at home. I may attend my friend Sonam Kapoor Ahuja’s Diwali party.”

Shatrughan Sinha: “The last two years have not been kind to any of us. Celebration toh dur ki baad, logon ko khana khane ke liye paise nahin (forget celebration, people didn’t even money for meals). Now things are relatively normal, so this is the first normal Diwali in three years. So be happy and enjoy. For us Diwali is family time. Puja at home with my twin sons and the two Laxmi Devis in my life, my daughter and my wife.”

Asha Parekh: "Diwali used to be a time for get-togethers and festivity. Now especially after Covid, it’s all gone. For me it is very quiet Diwali this year with maybe just a dinner with close friends. Let's be kind towards pets and no burst crackers."

Pooja Bhatt: “I have cats and dogs at home that shiver and cower and hide under the bed as the firecrackers start during Diwali. It is heart-breaking to see them that way. I feel helpless. I can’t do anything to ease their agony except wait for the noise to end.”

The discussion on nepotism in Bollywood kicked off years ago and still is talked about at various points. From star kids being called privileged to them being accused of paying producers, there have many claims made about them. Amongst them is Janhvi Kapoor who has received flak in the past for the high-profile films she has been signed for. The actress, who will next be seen in the survival drama Mili, spoke about how her being the daughter of the late Sridevi and producer Boney Kapoor, may have landed her a big debut but the fact that she is still working in films is because of some talent.

Janhvi Kapoor says that she and her father are not rich enough to pay the producers to cast her

In a recent interview with Siddharth Kanan, Janhvi Kapoor opened up about how her initial films may have been a result of her filmy background but the films she has been receiving currently are all because the filmmakers show some faith in her talent. She said, “I’ve analyzed this on the basis of the kind of opportunities that I’m getting. My first film, yes, perhaps there was a curiosity about me being Sridevi and Boney Kapoor’s daughter. And maybe that curiosity extended to my second film. But what about the ones after that? They’ve seen me now. What curiosity could there possibly be anymore?”

She went on to add, “Now if I am getting any work, it must be on the merit of what they think I can offer. It’s not like I am paying people to take me in their films. I’m not that rich nor is my dad. They must’ve appreciated something about me. Nobody is so large-hearted that they’d launch a star kid and take a monetary loss.”

On the work front, Janhvi Kapoor, who was last seen in the Disney+ Hotstar thriller Good Luck Jerry, will next be seen in the survival thriller Mili, which is a remake of the Malayalam film Helen. The actress will also be featuring alongside Rajkummar Rao in Mr. and Mrs. Mahi as well as Bawaal with Varun Dhawan.

Bollywood actor Ayushmann Khurrana has managed to thrive as he makes his choices on picking versatile scripts. Looking at his line-up, he is sure to continue to mould into one of the most experimental actors. While fans have to wait for his forthcoming film, the actor has recently delivered Doctor G on the silver screen. Before the release of the film, in a fun conversation with Bollywood Hungama, Ayushmann talked about it extensively.

Ayushmann Khurrana wants to get treated by an on-screen doctor played by THIS actress; reveals he has a ‘huge crush’ on her

Interestingly, we asked Ayushmann if he were to get treated by one doctor from the movies, who it would be. In the options, we gave him Kareena Kapoor from 3 Idiots, Sonali Bendre from Kal Ho Naa Ho, or Preity Zinta from Salaam Namaste. In his quick response to the rapid-fire question, he said, “Salaam Namaste is a very nice film. I really liked it,” while flashing a smile on his face.

While picking Preity Zinta over the other actresses given in the option, Khurrana elaborated that he had a “huge crush” on Zinta when he was in school.

Coming to the Anubhuto Kashyap directorial, Doctor G released in theatres on October 14, 2022. Along with Khurrana, the comedy-drama also stars Rakul Preet Singh and Shefali Shah in the lead. It revolves around a medical student, who gets admission to the gynaecology department. The film subtly touches on the stereotypes and struggles of a male gynaecologist.

On the other hand, Khurrana has a bunch of projects in his kitty, including the sequel of Dream Girl. Interestingly, Ananya Panday will be headlining the sequel. For the unversed, Nushrratt Bharuccha had played the leading lady in the first instalment.

I believe there’s more parity and less of show-off because in Punjabi culture, a lot of show-off in involved which is not there here in Mumbai. If a person is talented, he is respected here regardless of his background. That’s the best thing.”

Talking about the one thing of Chandigarh he wants to add in Mumbai, Ayushmann said, “Cleanliness of course.” Speaking of Doctor G, the film is a medical drama in which he will be seen essaying the role of a gynecologist. The ensemble star cast of the film also includes Rakul Preet Singh and Shefali Shah.

The Friday gone by saw the release of more than 10 Hindi films. Except for Doctor G, the rest of the films struggled to find audience even in single digits despite several screenings. A lot of viewers skipped watching these films, even if they were mildly interested, citing that these flicks were fit for OTT viewing. And indeed, a few of these films would have gotten decent viewership had they been released directly on streaming platforms. Then why are the producers of these movies taking the risk of releasing this film on the big screen and thereby adding to their costs needlessly? This is because releasing all kinds of films online directly is so 2020. In 2022, the rules have changed, and the producers are feeling the heat.

From ‘Say No to direct digital’ to ‘OTT release, hell yeah’
The trend of releasing a film directly online was unheard of before the pandemic. The Sushant Singh Rajput-Jacqueline Fernandez starrer, Drive, was the first big Hindi film to release directly on the OTT platform Netflix, on November 1, 2019. The film got a poor response from the audiences and critics alike and even a layman knew beforehand could guess that it was being directly released on digital as it must be a weak product. Bollywood Hungama, in fact, had reported 10 days after Drive’s release that actors and even directors wanted to add a ‘no direct digital release’ clause in their contracts to avoid a repeat of the Drive fiasco.

But six months later, all changed. Due to the imposition of the lockdown, producers were compelled to release their films directly on OTT. This time, the actors didn’t protest.

Gulabo Sitabo, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Amitabh Bachchan, was the first major film to take the plunge. It premiered on Amazon Prime on June 12, 2020. Soon, several films jumped on the bandwagon like Dil Bechara, Shakuntala Devi, Lootcase, Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, Khuda Haafiz, Sadak 2, Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare, Ginny Weds Sunny, Laxmii, Ludo, Chhalaang, Durgamati, Torbaaz, Coolie No 1 etc.

The trend continued in 2021 when theatres were shut for most parts of the year. Hence, films like The Girl On The Train, Pagglait, The Big Bull, Hello Charlie, Sardar Ka Grandson, Sherni, Haseen Dillruba, Toofaan, 14 Phere, Hungama 2, Mimi, Shershaah, Bhuj: The Pride Of India, Bhoot Police, Shiddat, Rashmi Rocket, Sardar Udham, Sanak, Hum Do Hamare Do, Bob Biswas, Atrangi Re, etc also skipped theatrical release. Films like Salman Khan’s Radhe and Khaali Peeli had a hybrid release.

2020-2021 digital era vs 2022 digital era
In the initial phase of 2022, Looop Lapeta, Gehraiyaan, A Thursday, Love Hostel, Jalsa, Sharmaji Namkeen and Dasvi were the only films that had a direct digital release. Dasvi was released on April 7, 2022 and the next significant Hindi film to get an OTT release was Forensic, on June 24, that is, more than two-and-a-half months later. After this film, Janhvi Kapoor-starrer Good Luck Jerry and Akshay Kumar-starrer Cuttputlli were the only movies that were able to directly stream online.

So, what exactly happened? A source told Bollywood, “The party is over, simply put. In 2020 and 2021, a lot of films took advantage of the fact that streaming platforms were buying films and paying huge amounts. The makers were relieved that they not only recovered their costs but also made a profit, without going the theatrical route. Later, once the cinema halls opened, many producers still wanted to continue releasing their films online. They had tasted blood, after all.”

The source continued, “But soon, the money dried up or rather, the platforms realized that paying them such a huge amount for their films is not helping them much. And the biggest problem with this arrangement was that the onus of promoting the film and making the viewers aware of the existence of the product fell on the digital platforms. Hence, they felt that these films should rather release first in cinemas. That’ll compel the producers to promote it. Then, the giants can premiere these films on the platforms. Since these films have already been promoted, audiences already know about it and this makes the job of digital giants easy.”

Experts speak up
Producer Anand Pandit told Bollywood Hungama, “India has a population of around 130 crore people. Out of these, 2 crore or a maximum of 3 crore people watch a film in theatres. The word of mouth generated by such a huge number of viewers gives the platforms the much-needed promotion, for free!”

He continued, “For example, everyone knew that Akshay Kumar-starrer Raksha Bandhan was released, regardless of whether they have seen it or not. This is because the producers promoted it extensively. Meanwhile, Akshay Kumar’s Cuttputlli was directly released online. Woh kab aayi aur kab gayi, kisi ko pata bhi nahin chala. So, this is a business call the platforms have taken. There’s nothing wrong in that.”

Anand Pandit further said, “You will not see Amazon or Disney+ Hotstar doing much publicity for films which has already released in theatres. They don’t need to as the producers have already done the needful. If they buy say 24 such films, they’ll probably buy half the number of movies for direct digital releases. It was just that during the pandemic, even they were looking for content. They saw it as a golden chance to make people used to OTT viewing. That’s why they took films for direct OTT release. Now, they have gone to their original policy.”

But isn’t this original policy hurting the producers? Anand Pandit stated, “Baarish mein aap umbrella leke nikle, toh samaj sakte hai. Lekin bearish ki season khatam hone ke baad bhi aap umbrella khol ke jaana chahta ho, toh fir yeh un producers ki problem hai!” He signed off by saying, “You have to work on your strength rather than somebody’s weakness”

On this, trade expert Komal Nahta, stated, “The digital channels have realized that they have spent too much on promotions if the film does not release theatrically. If it releases theatrically, it is believed and assumed that the producer would have done some basic spending on promotions and marketing. So, to that extent, the (OTT giants’) expenditure and their job reduce. This is the main reason why they insist on theatrical release after which they pick up films.”

He added, “Secondly if they premiere their film on their platforms, it means that they must pay a higher price. They have suffered such huge losses in recent times that they don’t mind paying lesser for late releases. At least, their risk reduces.”

When asked if the producers are suffering, he replied, “Yes they are. At the box office, there’s a compulsion of getting a respectable first day and first weekend numbers. So a premiere on OTT came as a boon for them as they were not bothered. The platforms also realized that they are not giving us good content. So, they felt that let them release their films theatrically and they can buy them at a lower price.”

Komal Nahta also said that “A lot of producers planned that ‘Hamari film OTT pe aa jaayegi aur paise mil jaayenge. But it’s not easy to make money.”

Token release in cinemas for many films
The source confessed, “Some films are getting a token release, that is, they are released with very minimal promotion. Sirf naam ka release hai. But the OTT platforms are okay as somewhere, the word spreads once a film is out in cinemas and their job gets easier. For instance, Toolsidas Junior had a very limited release and its collections were negligible in cinemas. But on Netflix, it got a huge viewership and was one of the top 10 films in as many as 14 countries. After winning the National Award, it further found an audience.”

A staffer from a multiplex in Mumbai said, “The streaming giants keep an eye as to whether the film they have acquired is completing at least one week run in cinemas. After all, what if some producers put up a film for just a day or two in cinemas and then discontinue? I remember the producers of Ganesh Acharya’s Dehati Disco had requested the top management to play the film for one full week. That week, Top Gun: Maverick and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 were doing very well. But we had no choice but to keep one show of Dehati Disco though it was getting no audience.”

The source then said, “There were films like Hurdang, Nikamma, Operation Romeo, Jahaan Chaar Yaar etc which also had to release in cinemas first though their producers hoped for a direct OTT release. Then there were mid-sized films which were well promoted such as Dobaara, Khuda Haafiz: Chapter 2 – Agni Pariksha etc. When the direct-to-OTT deal couldn’t happen, the makers went all out and promoted it well hoping it’ll find an audience in cinemas Sadly, that didn’t happen.”

The cost factor
All is not lost though. The OTT platforms are ready to buy films that want to skip theatrical release, but the prices are not insane anymore. In August 2022, Bollywood Hungama reported that the digital and satellite rights of Karan Johar’s upcoming production, Govinda Naam Mera, starring Vicky Kaushal, Kiara Advani and Bhumi Pednekar, has been sold to Star Network for Rs. 62 crores, which is also the budget of the film. Meanwhile, last year, the rights of a slightly smaller film, Bhoot Police, starring Saif Ali Khan, Arjun Kapoor, Yami Gautam Dhar and Jacqueline Fernandez, was sold for Rs. 60 crores. The film’s budget was Rs. 40 crores, and the producers, Tips, made a neat profit of Rs. 20 crores.

The source said, “It won’t be wrong to say that last year, Govinda Naam Mera would have fetched Rs. 75-80 crores. And had Bhoot Police released this year, it might have not got Rs. 60 crores and probably would have settled for a no-profit-no-less deal, just like Govinda Naam Mera.”

An industry expert also claimed that Kartik Aaryan-starrer Freddy is expected to directly premiere on Disney+ Hotstar and it hasn’t got the price that the producers had hoped for.

The streaming originals
Then there are films which are bankrolled by the streaming giants themselves. Examples include Alia Bhatt-starrer Darlings, Riteish Deshmukh-Tamannaah Bhatia starrer Plan A Plan B Kartik Aaryan-starrer Dhamaka and Diljit Dosanjh-starrer Jogi (Netflix), Madhuri Dixit-starrer Maja Ma (Amazon Prime Video), Tamannaah Bhatia-starrer Babli Bouncer (Disney+ Hotstar) etc.

The source explained, “Netflix has several original films in their pipeline like Zoya Akhtar’s The Archies, Vishal Bhardwaj’s Khufiya, Rajkummar Rao’s Monica O My Darling, Sanya Malhotra’s Kathal etc and had announced them at an event a few months back. These projects are greenlit after keeping into consideration the budget, the target audience etc and mostly making sure that it’ll turn out to be a profitable venture for them. With films that were meant for theatrical release and for whom going on OTT is an afterthought, the platforms have no say in the script, commercials etc due to which they prefer not to buy their rights.”

To conclude, the trend is here to stay
Most of the films will have to release in cinemas first. The source signed off by remarking, “In the early days of the pandemic, certain celebs and filmmakers were predicting how OTT is the future. This year, they are suddenly talking about the magic of the big screen! This is simply because OTTs have turned their backs on them. They feel helpless as many of them have made mediocre content and don’t know how to make a profit out of it. The solution is simple – make films that’ll blow away viewers. Then these films will have a chance not just in cinemas but also on streaming giants.”
