The pandemic in 2020 saw a rise in negativity and trolling of Bollywood movies and celebs. The bigwigs were being called out for nepotism, and ganging up on outsiders and a lot of topics led to many being brutally shredded on social media. Filmmaker Karan Johar was one of the names, who was at the receiving end of it all. Now, the filmmaker says that a lot of the trolling was ‘unfair’.

EXCLUSIVE: Karan Johar says he was at the centre of ‘negativity’ during pandemic; calls out trolling ‘unfair’: ‘It was not a nice time’

In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Karan Johar said that while a lot of trolling happened, he did come out stronger. “Bollywood went through a really tough time with all the trolling and bashing that was happening. It was not a nice time. I, particularly, felt I was right at the centre of so much negativity. It was something I never envisaged, imagined. I felt there was so much being said and written that was unfair.”

He added, “Yet, one had to chin up and move on. Because eventually, I am accountable to my company, to my mum, and my family. I just felt I had to be stronger and take it all in my stride. To be resilient was very important at that point of time. It was just so unnecessary and I am glad, we could go past that and focus on work. That’s what I did. I put all my thoughts on the work zone. Maybe not everybody came out as a stronger human being, but I’d like to say there were many.”

On the professional front, Karan Johar’s next directorial is Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani. The film stars Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi. The film is slated for 2023 release. The filmmaker is also planning to direct an action entertainer with hopes to kick off the shoot in April 2023.

Filmmaker Sajid Khan's participation in Bigg Boss 16 has led to a social media backlash. From netizens to celebrities, everyone’s calling out Colors TV, and Salman Khan for white-washing Sajid Khan’s past and not even addressing it during the premiere of the show. 9 women had come forward during the MeToo movement to report sexual harassment allegations against him. Singer Sona Mohapatra recently shredded MeToo-accused Sajid Khan, called out the channel Colors RV and filmmaker Farhan Akhtar, who is Sajid's cousin. Now, she has even called out lyricist Javed Akhtar for not condemning his Bigg Boss 16 participation.

Bigg Boss 16: After Farhan Akhtar, Sona Mohapatra now calls out Javed Akhtar for 'remaining silent' and not condemning Sajid Khan's participation amid sexual harassment allegations

Sona Mohapatra reshared a tweet that mentioned “a few things this filmmaker-turned-reality contestant has been accused of,” on Sunday. Sona wrote, “This is Sajid Khan, now on a reality TV show. Then there is Anu Malik, judging a music reality show on TV, for children no less. Kailash Kher? Celebrity judge on TV. All called out by many, many women in #MeToo. Indian TV channels, executives are indeed depraved and sad lot.”

In another tweet, Sona Mohapatra said, “And of course, the series sleaze. Vikas Bahl and master of disgusting, Suhel Seth, all back on Indian TV...thought that calms me (?) that it's a dying medium and some dying will thrash around doing the worst to save themselves, even if it means dragging other humans under; women.” Vikas Bahl, who is currently gearing up for Goodbye, was given clean chit in a sexual misconduct case. It was filed by a former employee in 2019.

She even called out Javed Akhtar for not condemning Sajid Khan and said, “Dear @Javedakhtarjadu , I know you to be a veteran, feminist & thought leader of the Indian film industry? That you choose to have remained silent all these years about these men you know very very well, personally, hurts me & breaks my heart. Charity begins at home.”

Previously, she had tweeted, “Dear @FarOutAkhtar, you front an organisation called MARD. This man & the many others are known to you personally. Speak up, Stand Up only when it’s convenient or pays to virtue signal for ‘our cause’ not now? Charity begins at home.”

Sajid Khan did not address any of those topics on the premiere episode on Saturday. He said, "Last four years se main ghar par baitha hoon, not really getting much of work. Toh jab Colors ki team ne mujhe invite kiya toh I just felt ki it’s time ki main ghar mein bhi jaun, thoda apne baare mein bhi sikhu (I've sat at home for the last four years and wasn't getting much work. So when I was invited by Colors, I felt that it's time I should enter the house and learn more about myself.)”

Sajid Khan continued, “Maine zindagi main bohot utaar-chadhav dekhein hai. Pichhle chaar salon main bahut niche…(I have seen many ups and downs in life. Very low in the last four years…).” Salman Khan then interrupted the director and said, “Ek hi utaar dekha hai. Baaki chadhav hi chadhav dekhein hain (You've seen only one drop but have only see the ups)."

The Housefull director then added, “Ek bahut bada utaar dekha hain (I saw a huge drop too.)”

He continued, “Ek kahawat hai ‘Failure destroys people’, mere case main ‘Success destroyed me’. Main bahut arrogant ho gaya tha, back-to-back teen hits thi… toh I thought I had become infallible, main koi galat film bana hi nahi sakta. Arrogant statements de raha tha, upar wale ne phat karke jhapad maara Himmatwala niche… thoda sa humble hua phir se jhapad maara aur Humshakals niche. Humshakals ke baad toh maine apni shakal hi chhupa di (There is a saying 'failure destroys people', but in my case 'success destroyed me'. I had become very arrogant, had back-to-back three hits... so I thought I had become infallible, I just couldn't make a wrong film. I was giving arrogant statements, god gave one tight slap, 'Himmatwala' flopped... got a little humble, swooped again and 'Humshakals' came and I hid my face.)”

Meanwhile, Sajid Khan will direct John Abraham and Riteish Deshmukh in 100%. The said film is expected to be a comedy and will star Nora Fatehi and popular reality show contestant turned actress Shehnaaz Gill.

Music plays an important role in lives of everyone. In India, Bollywood is one of the major sources of listening to some beautiful music and touching lyrics. The composers and artists are all celebs in their own right with the kind of gems they produce. And about them, most listeners want to know what goes on behind the scenes (or the microphone). Therefore, here is some fun trivia about Bollywood music!

A.R. Rahman reminding Gulzar of Lord Krishna to composers changing their names numerologically, here are some fun facts this month about Bollywood music!

Vishal and She(y)khar still rule the listener’s hearts
The music of Vikram Vedha has music by Vishal and Sheykhar rather than Vishal-Shekhar. Yes, that is the new numerological spelling of Vishal Dadlani’s partner She(y)khar Ravjiani, who is also a singer. This brings us to a look at composers who have changed spellings, numerology-driven or otherwise. Like A.R. Rahman billed as A.R. Rehman (for example, in the posters of Rangeela, his first original Hindi film). Or Aadesh and Adesh Shrivastava being spellings that kept changing for that late composer’s name, and Khayyam going for a while as Khaiyyaam, which was actually correct phonetically! Then there was Ilayaraja, who was spelt ‘Ilaiyaraaja’ as well, at least in Hindi films.

Changing names numerologically since decades
Of course, Shankar-Jaikishan would often be spelt Shanker-Jaikishan at the whim of filmmakers, and ‘Chowdhury’ would be spelt in so many ways for the late Salil-da. But the really amusing case was of the South genius, M.M. Keeravani (the name is a popular Indian classical raag) being named M.M. Kreem for his Hindi films. Said the composer, “I wanted a fancy name!”

A.R. Rahman reminded Gulzar of a young Lord Krishna!
Lyricist Gulzar once let on a secret about A.R. Rahman’s work-ethic at the time of their first collaboration in Dil Se… (1998). He told me, “The moment his singer stands in front of the microphone, Rahman lights a candle outside. And that candle burns on for hours. So whenever I want to ask him when he is planning to start the recording, I jokingly asked him, ‘Mombatti kab jalaaoge (When are you going to light the candle)?’ The atmosphere is very pious. You have seen how Bal Krishna looks—dark and with long tresses, and Rahman reminded me in those days of some chhota bhagwan with that child-like innocence. Now of course he keeps his hair short, but the innocence remains!”

Many facets of M.M. Kreem
That said, M.M. Kreem remains the only composer from South India who always had distinctively different styles for his Hindi and South Indian films. His Telugu songs never had a Hindi flavour and his Hindi songs never went South-wards, except for the bilingual Bahubali franchise and RRR in all of which he also struck a balance. Explained the composer, “Yes, I made sure of this in my songs. I would listen since a young age to Binaca Geet Mala (India’s first countdown in Hindi film music), and I especially loved Lata Mangeshkar and Madan Mohan.”

The SLB Magic never fails for the listeners!
Sanjay Leela Bhansali loved to talk about the importance of a composer’s dedication to creating musical excellence. “Ismail Darbar made me hear the tune of ‘Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyaan’ from Hum Dil…, over the phone, and I loved it. I told him I was coming over immediately to his house to finalize the song. But by the time I reached there in half an hour, Ismail had completely changed the song to a far better one by working only on the nuances.” The hit song was sung by Kavita Krishnamurthi Subramaniam and Kumar Sanu.

A.R. Rahman reminding Gulzar of Lord Krishna to composers changing their names numerologically, here are some fun facts this month about Bollywood music!

Shammi Kapoor’s active interest in music
Shammi Kapoor, it is well-known, would take an active part in his music from early on. He would even suggest Western tunes to his composers, like ‘Sugar In The Morning’ as the title-track for Dil Deke Dekho to Usha Khanna. But, ironically, the reverse happened with his China Town hit, ‘Baar Baar Dekho’ composed by Ravi. In 1962, a West Indies band took permission and rights from the composer to use his tune for a song in their language. Though Greece and certain Scandinavian countries often adapted tunes from Hindi films regularly, this was the first official one!

Jab We Met and the two composers
Now it can be told! Imtiaz Ali wanted Pritam and Sandesh Shandilya to do three songs each for Jab We Met. But after Sandesh recorded ‘Aaoge Jab Tum Saajana’ with Ustad Rashid Khan, he became very busy with Rang Rasiya. Sandesh told the director not to wait. “In fact, Pritam called me up and I told him to go ahead,” said the composer.

Sohail Sen’s breakthrough
A little-known fact about composer Sohail Sen’s breakthrough film, What’s Your Raashee? is that the composer’s father, music director Dilip Sen(-Sameer Sen) and Ashutosh Gowariker are old friends. When he requested the filmmaker to come and listen to his son’s tunes, the director, who had never looked beyond Rahman after Lagaan, did so. He even liked the youngster’s songs and told him that he was on for the 13 songs he needed for his new film. The amusing part was that none of the ‘stock’ tunes that Ashutosh listened to made it into the film in which Priyanka Chopra (Jonas) had 9 roles!

Phir Hera Pheri director Neeraj Vora and brother Uttank were also composers
Speaking of Ashutosh Gowariker, his first film, Pehla Nasha (1993), had catchy songs (largely sung by Asha Bhosle) composed by a duo called Neeraj-Uttank that was never heard of again. They were brothers whose father was Pandit Vinayak Rai Nanalal Vora, a classical musician and a proponent of Tar-Shehnai, and had popularized it as a solo instrument in classical music. Over a decade later, Uttank Vora, alone, composed the background music for Waqt—The Race Against Time and songs for Priyadarshan’s Malamaal Weekly, though he remained busy on TV and in Gujarati cinema. And Neeraj became a hit writer-director and actor, known best for films like Phir Hera Pheri (director), Hera Pheri (co-writer) and Bol Bachchan (actor)!

Welcome movie welcomed its title song after its background score was composed
A small tidbit here about the highly popular title-song from Welcome that was composed by Sajid-Wajid. “We scored the title-track and the background score,” the late Wajid had revealed. “The title-track of Welcome was recorded after the background score was done, and background scores are composed only when a film is not just complete but also edited! Firoz Nadiadwala spent Rs 3.5 crore on the song, with big stars like Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Anil Kapoor and Nana Patekar willingly allotting 5 days at short notice and Akshay saying, ‘This song is the real music of the film!’ Today, we are happy that the film’s music is primarily remembered by our song!”

Madhubala was an iconic star and one of the highest-paid entertainers in India in the post-independence era. The late actress was widely popular for her eternal beauty, pleasant personality, and sensitive portrayals of women. In the past few years, her name has made news with regard to her much-talked-about biopic.

“There’s going to be only one Madhubala biopic”, says the Mughal-e-Azam actor’s sister; appeals with folded hands

As the reports of Madhubala's biopic are again making the rounds on the internet, the late actress’s youngest sister, Madhur Brij Bhushan, has given some important updates. While talking to Pinkvilla, Bhushan asserted, “Let me make one thing clear: there’s going to be only one Madhubala biopic that will be backed by me and my team. The idea is to not hurt anyone’s sentiments (through the said biopic) but we will showcase several unknown facets of Madhu Apa’s life which aren’t out in public.”

She further added, “The film shall also put a number of misnomers/inaccuracies about her life to rest. Makers of Apa’s biopic backed by me will have all the creative freedom to put out her life in a truthful and honest manner.” Her comment came after several reports suggest that another biopic on Madhubala is also being planned by producer Tutu Sharma.

Speaking on the matter, she elaborated, “there is no competition going on. My legal team is doing the needful, and I will not let anyone else create any kind of project based on / or inspired by Madhu Apa’s life. I am not going to bow down because as I said earlier, this is the family’s emotional and legal right. We will soon reveal all the details related to Apa’s biopic. Since my team and I are extremely passionate about it, we are going to leave no stone unturned to put out Apa’s story in the most beautiful manner.”

Concluding her conversation, Bhushan said, “Honestly, I don’t want to keep repeating myself. I can only appeal with folded hands to kindly not go ahead with it. However, if they still decide to do it, then, my team and I shall do whatever is required – legally and otherwise – to safeguard my and my family’s rights/interests. I am going to fight till my last breath, including legally, to thwart any such attempts by someone else (to make a project based on Madhubala’s life).”

Speaking about his childhood memories with the festival of Navratri, Hrithik shared, "Bachpan mein bohot khelta tha (garba, dandiya). Bahut mazza aata tha. Mujhe yaad hai ki meri daadi (Ira Roshan) joh hai woh mujhe samjhati thi, mandir main joh devi stapith hoti hai unke bagal mein meri picturon ki joh script hai woh rakhti thi, blessings ke liye. Aur mujhe samjhaati thi ki yeh jo utsav hai yeh unn devi ka utsav hai jisne burai ka sarvanash kiya tha. Uss devi mein bohot shakti hai.. Woh shakti mujhe aaj nazar aarahi hai, aap sab mein! Aur yeh saari jo shakti hai yeh main leke apne kaam mein daalne waala hoon. Apne kirdaar mein daalne waala hoon. Agar aapko mere kaam mein kabhi power dikhein, toh yeh yaad rakhna ki yeh power mujhe aapse mila hai.. Uske liye bohot bohot bohot shukriya. Agar aapka power na ho toh mera kuch nahi hosakta (As a child, I used to play a lot (Garba, Dandiya). It was a lot of fun. I remember that my grandmother (Ira Roshan) would explain it to me thatthe script of my films were kept next to the goddess in the temple, for blessings. And I was in agreement that this festival is a celebration of the goddess who destroyed the evil. There is a lot of power in that goddess. I am seeing that power today, in all of you! And I am going to take all this power and put it in my work. I am going to cast in my character. If you ever see the power in my work, then remember that I got this power from you.. Thank you very much for that. If you don't have power, nothing can happen to me.)”

Last week Alia Bhatt announced that she was being awarded with the Time100 Impact Award. On Sunday the actress was present at the National Gallery in Singapore to accept the same. At the awards function, mom-to-be Alia Bhatt wowed the audience with a short yet powerful speech that touched upon her work in films, to her brands and of course her family. If that was not enough, the Brahmastra actress also spoke about her flaws, and how they play an important role in making Alia Bhatt.

In her speech, talking about flaws Alia added, “So, tonight, I want to take a moment with you all to celebrate my flaws along with my strengths. For example, I’m terrible at spelling. Like, really bad. But I do know what to say to someone who’s vulnerable. I have no sense of geography. Zero. I do not get directions. But I have a deep sense of respect and regard for different cultures. My general knowledge is widely known to be weak. But my emotional intelligence is something that I’ve worked really hard to cultivate. I have a tendency to be hard on myself with regards to my weight and my appearance. But I never say no to a french fry because, you know, YOLO.”

Continuing further while explaining that even in her film, she has tried to bring out a character’s flaws the actress added, “Through my movies and my characters, I’ve tried to celebrate flawed people. Because at the end of the day, it’s the imperfections that make a character compelling. So what I’m trying to say is that being yourself is truly the greatest impact that you could make. In the movies and in life, you do not have to be perfect; you just have to bring everything you have—the lows, the highs and the real things we are actually afraid of speaking about. There’s no greater impact than being yourself.”

Bollywood Hungama congratulates the actress and soon to be mother, Alia Bhatt on achieving such momentous success. On the work front, Alia Bhatt was last seen on the big screen in the Ayan Mukerji directorial Brahmastra alongside Ranbir Kapoor. Later, the actress will be seen making her Hollywood debut with Tom Harper's Heart Of Stone.
