Siddharth Anand’s movies rework old lyrics with fresh tunes While traditional or old popular compositions are frequently reworked in movies, director Siddharth Anand has shown a predilection to repeat or rework such lyrics rather than tunes. The very popular ‘Besharam Rang’ from Pathaan begins with the lines ‘Hamein To Loot Liya Milke Ishqwalon Ne’ which is a throwback to the 1958 film Al Hilal’s endemically popular qawwali, ‘Hamein To Loot Liya Milke Husnwalon Ne / Kaale Kaale Baalo Ne Gore Gore Gaalon Ne’. The director’s earlier film, War not only had a dance number with the mukhda ‘Jai Jai Shiv Shankar’ (the Aap Ki Kasam evergreen) but also used the much-celebrated ‘Ghunghroo Toot Gaye’ with versions heard at least twice before in films (in Naushad’s Dharam Kanta and Bappi Lahiri’s Param Dharam in the 1980s) as well as from Runa Laila and Pankaj Udhas, all with minor tweaks in lyrics. When Anand Bakshi likened himself to a shopkeeper And lyrics remind us of the peerless Anand Bakshi, who was humble enough to accept that he had a “shop” from which producers could choose “what they wanted”. In 1997, when he replaced Majrooh Sultanpuri in Yugpurush as the latter refused to write what he termed “cheap” lyrics for a situation, he famously said, “As a shopkeeper, I cannot tell a customer, ‘Here, I like this, so buy it and pay me too for it!’ The customer should buy what he likes, and pay me for that!” When help was needed from the Almighty Anand Bakshi’s favourite associate, (Laxmikant-)Pyarelal, was highly amused when he told me this story. “We had got Bakshi-ji to sing two songs, both hits in Mom Ki Gudia (1972). But the film bombed badly and the new hero’s career was over. Bakshi-ji was distraught, and when we offered him the introductory prelude of ‘Aaja Teri Yaad Aayi’ sung by Rafi-saab and Lata-bai in Charas, he became superstitious and requested us to show religious symbols like churches throughout his background vocals segment. Watch the song and you will know what I mean!” Late for duty but note-perfect And this is a story that connects Pyarelal’s partner Laxmikant with O.P. Nayyar, a stickler for punctuality and discipline. When he was a musician, Laxmikant was playing the violin for a Nayyar song and the recording was at Famous Studios. Nayyar would throw out even singers who came late, and musicians were also shown the door and payment refused. For the final take, Laxmikant was late and he surreptitiously entered the recording studio from the back door and took his place. But after the recording, Nayyar summoned him. A helpless Laxmikant admitted that he had been late. Nayyar told him, “I do not pay musicians who come in late. So you will not get that money (Laxmikant would then be paid Rs. 75!). But you played so well just by reading the notations! Good work!” And he took out more than that sum from his pocket and paid the delighted youngster! Vocal, not instrumental music for us Indians! In my only meeting with lyricist-composer Ravindra Jain, the veteran had told me, “In our country, instrumental music never works, except with the elite who go in for classical raags played on instruments, like Ustad Bismillah Khan’s shehnai. We need words to connect with our emotions, and that is why songs do so well.” At an event to commemorate Jain’s Silver Jubilee (25 years) in films, Rajkumar Barjatya (father to whizkid Sooraj R. Barjatya) of Rajshri Productions, with which the composer did as astounding 17 films, openly told the audience that “He is an even better lyricist than a composer.” Kishore for Ranbir, Rafi for Pulkit—what marks a true-blue playback singer! Kishore Kumar’s voice was used with the aid of technology by Vishal-Shekhar for Ranbir Kapoor in the film Bachna Ae Haseeno for the re-created title-song. The song originally featured in the 1977 Hum Kisise Kum Naheen, and viewers noticed a perfect fit though Kishore had also sung for his father Rishi Kapoor (and once even for Raj Kapoor!). The same was true when a part of Mohammed Rafi’s ‘O Meri Mehbooba’ (Dharam-Veer) was sampled in the re-creation for Fukrey Returns and filmed on Pulkit Samrat. True-blue playback singers always fit any generation of actor—another proof being Asha Bhosle singing for Vidya Balan in Begum Jaan, because Vidya was born when Asha was 46 years old! When Javed Akhtar highlighted uniqueness of Hindi cinema Lyricist Javed Akhtar once emphasized during a conversational interview with me that Hindi films only had a total of 8 to 10 principal song situations. “Around these, we lyricists and composers have composed thousands of songs!” he preened with due pride. Now, this fact is indeed remarkable when one thinks of it. And as of now, the score must probably be plus or minus 40,000 songs! Sonu Nigam on pitch-correction software Sonu Nigam is not too pleased with the overuse of pitch-correction software like Auto-Tune. “Such things are meant as a technical help when needed, not as a remedy for off-key voices,” he told me once. “Today, anyone can become a singer with this software. In the morning, such crooners should worship this software like a God.” Adnan Sami on relative values in music Did you know that the harmonium, now omnipresent in Indian music, is actually a foreign instrument that originated in France? Recalled Adnan Sami, who uses it to compose music, “I remember reading about how the harmonium had been banned at one time by All-India Radio because it was considered a foreign instrument since it was derived from the accordion.” The violin was also not accepted initially as an Indian instrument as it came from Italy. But today, both instruments are considered key (pun intended) tools in Indian music. Says Adnan, “I hink that it’s all a matter of Time. What is standard today was experimental when it began and yesterday’s pop star is today’s classical musician!” Shreya Ghoshal reveals a secret about ‘Chikni Chameli’ Shreya Ghoshal too has a problem with singing songs that have double entendre and more. Having sung well-worded and classy seductive beauties like ‘Jadoo Hai Nasha Hai’ and ‘Chalo Tumko Lekar Chale’ for Jism, she has a problem when the lyrics are objectionable. “I made sure certain parts of ‘Chikni Chameli’ (Agneepath) were modified. It’s very simple – we are not like the West – yet! There is a social responsibility that all artistes should have. Indians still have a comfort level in being covered. If that means not going with the times, then so be it! Indians worldwide are being increasingly respected and honoured for their cerebral qualities and that’s the way it should be! Riding high on the success of Pathaan, filmmaker Siddharth Anand has now given two back-to-back blockbusters. After War and Pathaan, he has become the undisputed number-one director of his genre in India. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone & John Abraham, the film has already collected Rs. 591 crores gross worldwide! But, the film did face its fair share of controversies especially when boycott calls were made after ‘Besharam Rang’ was released. Speaking to Deadline, when asked if he was worried about the negativity around Pathaan ahead of its release, he said, “All I know is they tried to boycott Pathaan and audiences came out in large numbers and supported it. I think if you’re going to boycott something or raise your voice against it, there has to be some merit in that. It has to be substantiated with some facts and some reality. What they were trying to do with Pathaan was just ridiculous and the audience has given its verdict. There’s also been a huge amount of support for Shah Rukh who has been a soft target in recent years. That’s why the film has done such big numbers. There’s been such an outpouring of love – they came in wanting to like the film and not to judge it.” Talking about the recent surge of South movies doing really well in the North market and how Pathaan has broken several records, he added, “We’ve captured all four quadrants, families are going in large numbers, men, women, youth audience, across both multiplexes and single screens. It’s also firing in all territories. Earlier it was a little slow in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh because people were afraid of protests. That was on the first day. But by evening, the numbers started increasing. The South is also coming in with big numbers, not just the Tamil and Telugu dubbed versions, but they’re also coming for the original Hindi version because they want to hear Shah Rukh speaking in his original voice.” On the work front, Siddharth Anand is next directing Fighter headlined by Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone. Prime Video on Wednesday confirmed that Samantha Ruth Prabhu will be starring alongside Varun Dhawan in the Indian installment of the Citadel universe, the global-event series from Prime Video and the Russo Brothers’ AGBO. The untitled Citadel series based out of India is being helmed by renowned creator duo Raj & DK (Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK), who are the showrunners and directors. The local installment is written by Sita R. Menon, along with Raj & DK. The streaming service also confirmed that the production is currently underway in Mumbai. After this, the unit will head to North India and then onwards to international locales like Serbia and South Africa. As previously announced, Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas will star in the first-to-launch series within the Citadel universe, which comes from the Russo Brothers’ AGBO along with David Weil and is set to premiere in 2023. Alongside Madden and Chopra Jonas, the first-to-launch Citadel series will also feature Stanley Tucci. Additional local-language Citadel productions are also in the works, including an Italian Original series starring Matilda De Angelis. “We are absolutely thrilled to be working with Samantha once again. It’s been seven days since Pathaan released in theatres and continues to shatter box office records. The team of the film is processing the massive success of the film which released on January 25, 2023 worldwide. Veteran actor Annu Kapoor was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi on January 26 after he complained chest pain. The artist was kept under treatment for four days. Thankfully, for his fans and well-wishers, his condition improved over the days and he was discharged from the hospital last night, as reported by Indian Express through the Press Trust of India. As per the agency, the news was shared by Dr Ajay Swaroop, Chairman, Board of Management, Sri Ganga Ram Hospital. As per the publication, Kapoor was treated by a team of cardiologists comprising, Dr J P S Sawhney, Dr Rajneesh Jain, Dr Rajiv Passey, Dr BS Vivek and Dr Sushant Wattal. The publication also quoted Dr Rajneesh, co-director of cath lab and head of unit, saying, “Kapoor was discharged today in a stable condition.” Kapoor has been one of the most accomplished actors from Bollywood over the decades. After making his debut in the parallel cinema of the early 1980s, he has gone onto act in over 100 movies, along with television serials. Since recent years, he has also ventured into the latest fad of web shows. His last released work in the web space was the Amazon Prime Video show Crash Course. Kapoor is also currently hosting the musical show Golden Era with Annu Kapoor since several years. Back in March 2022, Netflix announced that Kareena Kapoor Khan, Jaideep Ahlawat, and Vijay Varma were coming together to star in Sujoy Ghosh's untitled film. The film marks the digital debut of Kareena. It is a screen adaptation of one of Keigo Higashino’s most acclaimed novel, “The Devotion of Suspect X”. Now, Kareena has wrapped the project. Speaking to Variety, Kareena Kapoor described the Sujoy Ghosh project as “dramatically different”. “For me, it’s very different because obviously you’re used to seeing me in all the mainstream movies, which has the song, the dance, the gloss, the glamour. Both these films (Sujoy Ghosh & Hansal Mehta’s next projects) are shockingly different,” Kareena said. The film follows the story of a “single mother and her daughter who commit a crime and a neighbor who helps them cover it up amidst a police investigation.” The film is produced by 12th Street Entertainment, Northern Lights Films in association with Boundscript and Kross Pictures and marks Kareena Kapoor Khan’s streaming debut. Sujoy Ghosh will be producing the film along with Jay Shewakramani, Akshai Puri, and Thomas Kim. On another note, the actress has also wrapped the Hansal Mehta directorial, which is reportedly titled The Buckingham Murders. The film marks her debut as a producer along with Ekta Kapoor. “I love ‘Mare of Easttown’ and when Hansal came to me, I said this is something that I’ve really been dying to do. So we’ve molded a little bit on those lines, she plays a detective cop in that,” Kareena told Variety. “It’s the first time that I’ve dabbled in that.” The actress also said that the film is 80 percent shot in English and 20 percent in Hindi. It was extensively filmed in the UK. “I speak fluently in Hindi and I think also in Hindi because that’s been what I’ve been doing all my life,” she added. “When you’re thinking in Hindi, but speaking in English, it was actually a difficult task to do because it was the reverse situation for the first time.” “I never really thought that I would be a producer. But when I heard this subject, and the fact that it’s very different to a regular Hindi movie… it’s a very different, take to things. So I thought that will be really nice and different,” Kapoor Khan said. “And when Ektaa and Hansal told me that, ‘since you love the script so much, why don’t you come on board as a creative producer as well, and take some calls as to what you think also and give your name to it’ – after much thought, I thought that if I love something so much, and this is a character that I wanted to play, I think it’s fun to do it. It’s the first time. I don’t know if I’ll repeatedly do it. But let’s see.” With this film, Kareena Kapoor Khan turns producer. After much speculation surrounding the role on whom the film’s title is based, Anurag Kashyap reveals Vicky Kaushal as DJ Mohabbat in his directorial Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat, co-starring Alaya F and Karan Mehta. Anurag Kashyap recently made headlines where he expressed guilt over his public statement about his Dev.D actor Abhay Deol and privately about the late Sushant Singh Rajput. In an interview, Anurag accused Abhay of being difficult to work with, claiming that the actor insisted on staying in a five-star hotel separate from the rest of the cast and crew. Abhay had denied this. Anurag had revealed shortly after Sushant's death that he had refused to speak with him about a project because he was resentful of being ghosted by the actor in the past. The filmmaker discussed his differences with Abhay and Sushant in a new interview with Showsha. He said, “It’s taken me a year-and-a-half of sickness to realise a lot of things. I was so reactive; I would say things. I would say things out of anger, out of reaction, to things I felt perturbed by. It took me time to realise that I’m shouting, I’m shouting in a room full of people shouting. Nobody’s listening to each other, not just to me. That’s what social media has become. And I stepped back. I said, ‘Why am I reacting to this? What is bothering me?'” He further added, “A lot has changed, but I know I have no filter. But it’s also made me realise I don’t need to say everything… For example, that whole spat between me and Abhay. Somebody was doing an article about why a very good actor like Abhay is no longer in the movies, and I spoke about my experiences, something that happened 13 years ago. I didn’t need to say it publicly. And the day the unfortunate incident happened of SSR, I felt so bad. Three weeks prior to that somebody was trying to reach out because he wanted to talk, and I was like, ‘No, he ghosted me, I don’t want to talk’. You get pangs of guilt. So, I tried to reach out to Abhay and I apologised to him, because somebody had told me that he was upset about me speaking publicly about him.” Anurag stated that he told Abhay that it was fine to yell at him and then apologised repeatedly for what he said. However, Abhay appeared to be upset about what Anurag had said about him as recently as last month. Abhay called the filmmaker a "liar" and a "toxic" person in an interview with mid-day. Anurag acknowledged that they had both changed and expressed regret for what he had said. Anurag had stated in a 2020 interview with NDTV that he was disappointed that Sushant had backed out of projects with him in favour of more high-profile jobs. He stated, “YRF called him and said, ‘We’ll give you a deal. You do Shuddh Desi Romance.’ Sushant, who used to sit in my office with Mukesh and all of us used to sit together, signed up with YRF and dropped Hasee Toh Phasee, a film of an outsider because usko validation YRF ka chahiye tha (he wanted validation from YRF). Jacqueline Fernandez, who is currently being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate owing to her alleged involvement in the Sukesh Chandrashekhar Rs. 200 crore extortion case, has been granted the permission to travel abroad for professional commitments, albeit with certain conditions. The actress had earlier approached the Delhi Patiala High Court seeking the permit for travelling abroad to attend her scheduled performance for PepsiCo India conference where she was to perform at the Annual Bottlers Conference in Dubai. On Friday, the Delhi Patiala High Court granted permission to Jacqueline Fernandez to travel to Dubai after her counsel argued that the actress may face lawsuit from the brand for non-participation if she doesn’t make it to the conference. Considering the same, the court has granted her permission to travel but along with that it has also observed that it will come along with some conditions. Owing to the fact that the ED is still investigating the Sukesh Chandrashekhar case, for which, she has been named as a witnessed, the court has laid certain guidelines for the actress including a FDR of Rs. 1 crore, in case she doesn’t return. As per the court order, the actress is also expected to give a full disclosure of her stay details in Dubai including itinerary, arrival, and departure. In the past too, Jacqueline Fernandez had filed a plea seeking permission to travel but had withdrawn the same. While the counsel argued that the actress decided to cooperate in the investigation and decided against traveling for personal reasons, the current reason for her to insist on leaving for Dubai is because of the professional repercussions she may face if she doesn’t attend the event. On the other hand, the ED opposed it not only stating that the case is still under investigation but also pointing out that Jacqueline is a foreign national which increases the threat of her fleeing. After listening to both arguments, the court upheld its decision of allowing Fernandez to travel for the conference but keeping in mind the ongoing investigation of the Sukesh Chandrashekhar Rs. 200 crore extortion case, the court has asked the actress to strictly adhere to the guidelines that have been laid down. For the unversed, Jacqueline Fernandez is being investigated for her alleged relationship with Sukesh Chandrashekhar. While the actress claims to be a victim of the conman, the Enforcement Directorate is investigating and has filed multiple chargesheets regarding the same. The SCO Council of Heads of States and the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) had collaborated to organise the film festival. On the opening day of the festival, Bollywood celebrities Akshay Kumar, Tiger Shroff, Hema Malini, and others received awards. In Mumbai for the festival's opening, Union Minister Thakur noted that the distinctions between regional and worldwide film have become more hazy and emphasised the importance of creating high-quality content that will be recognised on a global scale. He told reporters, "Somebody asked me about regional or how come it is an international thing here, nothing is regional today if the content has the power, it will go places, from regional to national to international. Keep making good content; there are no boundaries for good content. This (Appatha) is going to make great news at the box office and will be seen across the world." India is hosting the G20 Summit in 2023, and it also holds the SCO Presidency, according to the minister, making it a significant year for the country. He asserted that India and the SCO have close ties, and for many years, residents of the SCO's member countries have praised and adored Indian movies. "In one-year (these) big events are happening in India. And we have a lot of showcases, especially our rich cultural heritage, (and) we should only be proud of it. The world of cinema is incomplete without India and India is the largest filmmaking country and of late we are making right news, right noise at the international level," he added. The festival's mission, according to the minister, is to foster young filmmaker potential, foster relationships in the film industry, and function as a bridge between the cultures of this distinctive region. It also offers exchange programmes. When Thakur inquired about Akshay Kumar's readiness to appear in foreign movies, the 55-year-old actor responded, “I believe in being aatmanirbhar (self-reliant) and will do Hindustani films." On the other hand, Shroff asserted that he is open to acting in foreign films and that he thinks that cinema transcends all languages. He said, "Films transcends boundaries, it is a visual medium and creativity has no language. I am very happy to be here and be part of this event and celebrate Indian cinema and its growth, and of course world cinema and all the countries that have participated and showed their talent." Hema Malini asserted that a major factor in an actor's increasing notoriety outside of India is participation in film festivals. "Through the festival a lot can happen. Like, (for) SCO film festival, there is participation from Russia, China, Uzbekistan and other (countries), it is a good thing and the result will be good. 2023's first mega blockbuster, Pathaan, is creating a rampage at the box office. The film is being loved not just for its tight script, music, scale, action, patriotism and of course the performances of Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham, but also because it has some very exciting and unexpected Easter eggs. These are related to scenes and dialogues of past films, some of which belong to the YRF (Yash Raj Films) spy universe, just like Pathaan. Bollywood Hungama, in this special feature, lists out these Easter Eggs 1. One of the most hilarious scenes in the film is when Pathaan infiltrates the bedroom of a lady named Karen, who possesses the key to the safe where 'rakht beej' is stored, in Moscow's Woskwich Tower. Karen was supposed to be fast asleep after unknowingly consuming sleeping pills. But when Pathaan is taking her fingerprints, she unexpectedly wakes up. At this moment, Pathaan sings the iconic song of Darr (1993), 'Tu Hai Meri Kiran'. But he replaces Kiran with Karen not just while singing the song but also when mouthing the iconic dialogue, ‘K-K-K-K-Kiran’. As expected, viewers went crazy at this point. 2. Pathaan and Rubina (Deepika Padukone) discussing how to steal 'rakht beej' leads to Pathaan uttering '7 din Rakht beej in'. It was an inspiration to the '6 din ladki in' sequence from Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), starring Shah Rukh, Preity Zinta and Saif Ali Khan. 3. The famous number of War (2019), 'Ghungroo Toot Gaye', is mentioned by Pathaan in his entry scene. Interestingly, War, starring Hrithik Roshan, Tiger Shroff and Vaani Kapoor, was also a part of YRF Spy Universe. 4. Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan coming together and fighting the baddies made for enough entertainment. Yet, the makers enhanced the scene by infusing humour. Tiger (Salman Khan) exclaiming "Bhaag Pathaan Bhaag" was a direct homage to the "Bhaag Arjun Bhaag" scene from Karan Arjun (1995), which featured both of them in leading roles. 5. Certain observant moviegoers have noticed that the background score used in Pathaan and Tiger's scene is the same that was used in War. 6. Finally, the mid-credit scene of Pathaan and Tiger is highly entertaining. It shows both the spies thinking of retiring after 30 years of service. But they are unable to think of a replacement and hence, decide to continue working. The latest poster and release date reveal of Fukrey 3 earlier this week became a reason for happiness for the fans of the comedy franchise. The poster had the usual Fukrey stars like Richa Chaddha, Pulkit Samrat, Varun Sharma and Pankaj Tripathi. However, a major player from the franchise in the form of Ali Fazal was missing from the poster as well as the official press release. Ali has now broken the silence on his absence from the new announcement of the third film in the comedy franchise. The actor is unable to be a part of Fukrey 3 because his dates are clashing with the shoot of Mirzapur 3, the next season of Amazon Prime Video’s gangster show. Co-incidentally, both Fukrey and Mirzapur franchises are produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani under their banner Excel Entertainment. Speaking about the absence of his character Zafar from the Fukrey 3 announcement, Ali said in a statement, “So Zafar aayega ya nahi? Sab yahi puch rahe hain baar baar. Sorry saathiyon, iss baari nahi! Zafar bhai ko kabhi kabhi Guddu bhaiya bhi banna padhta hai. Aur do universes overlap ho jaate hain kabhi kabhi (Everyone is asking if Zafar will return but sorry friends, not this time. Making an OTT release, Yami Gautam starrer Lost is all set to exclusively premiere on ZEE5 from 16th February. Presented by Zee Studios and Namah Pictures, Lost is an investigative thriller, inspired by true events. ZEE5, India’s largest homegrown OTT platform, announced the release date of its next direct-to-digital original film, Lost. Produced by Zee Studios and Namah Pictures, the film is an investigative thriller starring Yami Gautam Dhar, Pankaj Kapur, Rahul Khanna, Neil Bhoopalam, Pia Bajpiee and Tushar Pandey in key roles. Headlined by national award-winning director Aniruddha Roy Choudhury who has also directed Amitabh Bachchan starrer Pink, Lost earned a standing ovation at Chicago South Asian Film Festival 2022, Atlanta Indian Film Festival 2022 and 53rd International Film Festival of India. And after doing the rounds at these prestigious film festivals, Lost is now set to premiere on ZEE5 on 16th February. Written by Shyamal Sengupta with dialogues by Ritesh Shah, Lost is based in Kolkata and is inspired by true events. Actress Athiya Shetty and cricketer KL Rahul tied the knot this January 23 at Suniel Shetty's farmhouse in Khandala. The couple has been in a relationship for a long time and opted for an intimate wedding ceremony in presence of family and close friends. While not many celebrities were in attendance, it was reported that the couple received tremendous gifts which were in lakhs and crores. Several reports stated that Athiya Shetty and KL Rahul were gifted luxurious cars, bikes, watches and a flat. Pathaan is roaring in theatres and the response is unprecedented. With the release of the Shah Rukh Khan – Deepika Padukone – John Abraham starrer, the opening day collections have been Rs. 57 crore in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu languages in India.
