Since the release of the first track ‘Besharam Rang’ from the Shah Rukh Khan – Deepika Padukone starrer Pathaan, there have been multiple protests and calls for boycott against the film. While social media is flooded with haters and supporters fighting it out, it remains a question whether the film’s business will be affected by the protests. In a recent interview with Bollywood Hungama, veteran film exhibitor and theatre owner Manoj Desai opened up about these protests. But what caught our attention was the veteran exhibitor speaking about the trend of colouring actors and films with religious subtext.

EXCLUSIVE: “Do not compare actors to religions, it is all just entertainment”, says Manoj Desai

Calling out the same, Desai opined that films and religion should be kept separate. “This is totally wrong. If you were to bring religion in between Dilip Kumar’s Mughal-E-Azam would not have run for 17 years. Actors are actors; do not see their religion - that is a humble request. It is all just entertainment”, said Desai.

Further citing one of Vidya Balan’s dialogues from the film The Dirty Picture, Desai continues, “As Vidya Balan had said in her film, film industry is entertainment, entertainment, entertainment. Never think who is a Hindu and who is a Muslim working on a film. I do not take sides in religion. Respect all religions and do not compare films with caste.”

Over the past few months, a new and unsettling trend of ‘Boycott Bollywood’ has emerged on social media, with various users calling for a boycott on either films, actors or songs. But will this so called ‘Boycott Culture’ adversely affect a film’s overall business is a question that remains unanswered. In a recent interview with Bollywood Hungama, veteran film exhibitor and theatre owner Manoj Desai opened up on this unsettling trend. Interestingly, Desai claims that this is just a political game, and that in reality there can never be a boycott on Bollywood.

EXCLUSIVE: “This Boycott culture is a political game; I do not believe in such politics”, says Manoj Desai

“This ‘Boycott culture’ is a political game. I do not believe in such politics. I earnestly request the audience - if everything is fine, go to a theatre and watch a film on 70mm, the big screen. According to me, Bollywood films will come back with flying colours and for that, five to six films like Pathaan should come and run in theatres non-stop. Today’s culture is such that films do not last till their 25th week since they go onto OTT platforms. I think they should run for 10 to 15 weeks in theatres, only then will Bollywood make a comeback. I screened an Odiya film here and that went houseful. Kantara is a film which I never thought will work. I never dreamed that it would go houseful for so long. Even this Friday, Kantara is playing”, says Desai as he continues to insist about the ‘boycott culture’ being a game.

Later, sharing his views on how Bollywood can make a comeback and why there can never be a boycott on Bollywood the exhibitor continued, “There can never be a boycott on Bollywood. How many South films will you get? Like recently, I spoke to Boney Kapoor and asked him to dub his South film in Hindi. He refused saying he would rather keep the film as it is. And that was a well-received film. In Chembur, there was a 3 am and a 6 am show and both of them was houseful. Bollywood has been running for years - since the era of silent films till date and there have been such memorable films. All of this has to come back… and where is the music? Where is the music from films of the past?”

In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, when Taran Adarsh was asked if Kartik Aaryan’s Freddy was to be released in theatres and not on OTT platform, would it have been a bad situation for the film, to which the film critic replied, “I wouldn’t say bad situation, rather I feel it would have performed decently at the opening considering Kartik Aaryan’s popularity. Freddy was apt for OTT platform and was a very good and wise decision made”.

Taran Adarsh reasons why releasing the Kartik Aaryan starrer Freddy on OTT was apt; says, “Was a very good and wise decision”

Directed by Shashanka Ghosh, the film sees Freddy’s life change drastically after he crosses paths with the beautiful Kainaaz Irani. Talking about Kartik Aaryan’s another hit film Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, Taran Adarsh stated, “For certain films, producers themself realize whether they should put a film in theatres or sell it to the OTT platforms. Bhool Bhulaiyas 2 was fantastic in terms of numbers. 14 crores of opening for Kartik Aaryan is huge. The film remained at number one position for quite a few weeks”.

Further sharing his inputs on which OTT film would have done better if it released in theatres, Taran added, “In current times, OTT platform people have also become very smart. They ask the makers of the film to put the film in theatres first and only then they will take it on their OTT platform. But I feel if films like Govinda Naam Mera were to release in theatres, then I am not saying it would have been a blockbuster, but it might have worked decently well in theatres. Even before this, Dharma had made a film, Shershaah which would have done extremely well in the theatres”.

Kartik Aaryan will next be seen in Shehzada in February. The film will see Rohit Dhawan in the director’s chair.

Since the release of the first track ‘Besharam Rang’ from the Shah Rukh Khan – Deepika Padukone starrer Pathaan, there have been a number of protests against the film. In fact, certain factions have been calling for a boycott of the film itself rather vociferously. Making no bones about the entire ‘boycott Pathaan’ trend being some kind of propaganda veteran film distributor and owner of G7 in Bandra, Manoj Desai recently engaged in a freewheeling chat about the subject.

EXCLUSIVE: “An equal number of Hindus and Muslims will watch Pathaan, and both are of the same value to me” - Manoj Desai opens up on the Boycott Pathaan trend

Speaking exclusively to Bollywood Hungama the veteran distributor says, “It is quite possible that there is some kind of propaganda behind this. I have not said anything because of my relations with Shah Rukh Khan. Whenever there has been a Shah Rukh or Salman film, they are at Gaiety Galaxy. They (the actors) always come by. As for propaganda, I do not care about it.”

Continuing about the entire religious divide created, Desai adds, “For me, there is no Hindu – Muslim. I will say it again; an equal number of Hindus and Muslims will watch Pathaan. And both have the same level of value for me because, at the end of the day, they are both my customers. I have to salute them. So that Hindu-Muslim divide does not come up for me, and I do not talk about it either.”

Every major actor and actress today has dedicated fan clubs. But SRK Universe stands out. The manner in which its members passionately celebrate Shah Rukh Khan and his movies are seen to be believed and even quite heartening. With SRK returning on the big screen after more than four years with Pathaan, the excitement among the fans is palpable. And they have some very grand plans to celebrate Pathaan’s release with fanfare.

EXCLUSIVE: SRK Universe co-founder shares EXCITING details of Pathaan’s first-day first show fan screenings: “We are going to put up 100 feet plus cut-outs of Shah Rukh Khan in theatres ACROSS the country. We want to celebrate Pathaan’s release like a FESTIVAL”

Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to Yash Paryani, the co-founder of SRK Universe about these plans. Currently, in Bengaluru, Yash started by stating how the listings of fan screenings managed to get mentioned on the popular ticketing app, Book My Show. He said, “This is the first Hindi movie ever to be listed for fan screenings on Book My Show. Even before the actual advance will commence, our shows will be full.”

Yash Paryani continued, “Right now, our shows will take place in 200+ cities. At least 500 shows have been planned. As we speak, more cities and shows are being added. In Mumbai and Delhi, we’ll have over 6 first day first show fan screenings each. Kolkata has 4 screenings. Our shows will start before the usual show timings. In short, we hope to have our show at 7:00 or 8:00 am. So before 9:00 or 10:00 am, we’ll hopefully be crossing collections worth Rs. 1 crore+ just from our shows!”

The demand for these fan shows of Pathaan has been incredible. Yash revealed, “A lot of shows are already sold out. In Mumbai, we plan to have 3 more shows given the push we have and the demand generated. In Delhi, there were 5 shows and just 2 days back, one more show was added.”

What’s lovely is that Shah Rukh Khan is aware of these efforts of SRK Universe and even interacts with them. Yash Paryani revealed, “SRK was in Delhi where he met our team. Our Delhi-NCR admin, Siddharth Gupta, was quite unwell and he couldn’t meet him as it was quite late at night when the members had gone to see him. But since he works so hard, I wanted him to meet Shah Rukh sir. And we managed to do that and got him to meet SRK at the airport. Siddharth told him about the screenings and that many shows are already sold out. SRK was very happy on hearing that. He also asked him about the feedback on Pathaan’s trailer.”

SRK Universe members are not just going to arrange for Pathaan’s shows. They are also going to celebrate the release in a grand manner. Yash Paryani opened up, “During Zero (2018), the character of Bauaa was just 4 feet long. So we made a cut-out of Bauua that was 60 feet long. It was installed at IMAX Wadala in Mumbai. This time, in theatres across the country, we are going to put up 100 feet plus cut-outs of Shah Rukh Khan. We are still figuring out which theatres will have these cut-outs but the idea is clear - We want to celebrate Pathaan’s release like a festival and the way the fans do for their idols down South. We want to bring the same style to Bollywood with this film.”

Aged 26, Yash Paryani also has a day job and juggles both works effectively. He said, “I head marketing at a gaming company. It is difficult, to be honest. It’s a lot of work managing to get shows, do payments, manage socials etc. Somehow I am managing to do both. I usually work on all this after office hours. It’s crazy and it takes a toll as well. We have a team of 5-6 people, who are quite helpful and hard-working. But during the release or his birthday, I need at least 100 hands as there are too many inquiries and calls.”

Yash Paryani also added that it’s the fans who have made contributions to these celebrations. Talking further, he said, “There’ll be T-Shirts and other merchandise as well. Also, since Pathaan is first Indian film to be shot in IMAX format and releasing in IMAX, we are planning to do shows in IMAX theatres pan-India as it’ll make for an ultimate big-screen experience.”

Yash signed off by saying, “It’s not just limited to the first-day first shows. We’ll be celebrating #PathaanDay on January 25. On January 26, #RepublicDayWithPathaan. For the long weekend, #PathaanWeekend. For our first day first show screenings, we are expecting over 50,000 people.”

Pathaan releases in cinemas on January 25, 2023. Also starring Deepika Padukone and John Abraham, it is directed by Siddharth Anand and produced by Aditya Chopra’s Yash Raj Films.

In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, well-known film critic and trade analyst, Taran Adarsh, while sharing his viewpoint on the fees charged by actor Akshay Kumar, said, “There are two points to look at. One, the producers are willing to pay that amount, so it is not his (Akshay Kumar) fault as he is not forcing anyone to pay him that amount. Akshay has not demanded anyone regarding his fees, rather he just informs the amount he charges. However, today the situation has changed. The economic strain which exists now was probably not there earlier due to which these amounts were affordable and also economically feasible, unlike now”.

EXCLUSIVE: Taran Adarsh talks about economic condition of Bollywood; says, “2022 has been the worst year for Hindi film industry”

Further talking about the condition of Hindi film industry last year, he stated, “I would say that 2022 has been the worst year for Hindi film industry. I have not seen such bad phase in 80s or 90s, even though a lot of piracy used to take place during that time. However, piracy happens even now, but the previous decades were still better than the phase we are in”.

“Films not performing well is a different issue; major problem is that people are not coming to theatres to watch films. Morning and afternoon shows are being cancelled along with only 5-6% occupancies in theatres. All these factors bring back to the point that the fees which is being charged is not feasible considering the current situation”, he added.

Continuing his viewpoint, Taran said, “When a film gets hit, actors take the credibility, but when a film gets flop, the directors or producers are blamed, release strategy and even the climate is blamed. People never take accountability for the films getting flopped”.

Shreyas told Bollywood Hungama, "Nagesh Kukunoor said Naseer sir will join us in a few days, 'But see, he's a bit temperamental, if he gets angry, and you feel that you are not able to speak with him, then you don't worry, just come and tell me, and I will handle it'. I was a little nervous. Naseer ji came and we shot through the day. In the evening Naseer ji called me and asked if I had done theatre. He then said that it is seen in my acting. He said that he wants to tell me about Nagesh's temperament, if he gets upset and angry, I can come and tell him. He will handle it. Karan Johar is one of the most prolific filmmakers in India. Karan Johar recently revealed on Masters’ Union’s Business of Bollywood podcast how a movie can make money even after it is failed to create any magic at the box office. Explaining the mathematics behind the budget of the project, Karan cited an example of how money is divided.

Karan Johar explains how a movie can make money even after it has flopped at the box office

“If I’m getting Rs 40 crore from digital and I’m getting Rs 20 crore from satellite and I’m getting Rs 15 crore from music, then I’m already at Rs 75 crore. My cost is Rs 90 crore. So I’m presuming my film will do around Rs 40 crore (in the theatres). If I do Rs 40 crore, then 55 percent of that comes home theatrically. So then, I’m like okay, I can make this movie. This is your intelligent mind, doing this calculation but if you have to take a chance, you have to take a chance,” Karan Johar said on the Masters’ Union podcast while talking about the business of Bollywood.

Citing another example, Karan Johar said that if a film requires Rs. 80 crore nett collections at the box office, it is a risky venture in current climate post-pandemic. “That’s the time you are taking a risk because in this climate you don’t know what will work and what won’t but this simple mathematics, I always do for a filmmaker,” he added.

Furthermore, he talked about how a movie can make money even if it is a flop only due to cost control. He elaborated, “Suppose I make my film in Rs. 50 crore because it’s a smaller film, but my digital and satellite rights are Rs. 60 crore, so even if it bombs I have made the money even before it hits the cinemas, and a lot of times that has been known to happen. And you could make a massive movie and it could do a massive number but you spent so much money that you haven’t been able to recover your cost.”

Meanwhile, Karan Johar is set for his next directorial Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani with Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi. The film releases in April 2023.

Further that actor shared that after being aware of his condition, he preferred to die rather than take chemotherapy, he said, "My wife was in Dubai, so Priya (sister Priya Dutt) came to me. My first reaction was that, once you hear something like this, your whole life reflects back at you. I have a history of cancer in my family. My mom died of pancreatic cancer; my wife (Richa Sharma) died of brain cancer. So, the first thing I said was that I don't want to take chemotherapy. If I'm supposed to die, I will just die but I don't want any treatment."

Maanayata had penned down a powerful note around the release of KGF 2. She wrote, “The film has been a special journey for us in more ways than one. All those who have often labelled him as irresponsible, non-committed and a bad boy must watch this film to see his determination, dedication and commitment. Sanju shot this film during the most vulnerable phase of his life... our lives. He shot uncomplainingly, all those strenuous scenes with the same passion as ever," she wrote.

Twinkle Khanna, daughter of yesteryear superstar Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia, marked her debut in 1995. However, her acting career was short-lived as she decided to quit in 2000. Later, she turned into a producer and writer. Making another addition to the same, on Friday, the former actress shared a tip.

Twinkle Khanna gives a thoughtful tip for parenting; says, “our job is not to give our children perfect childhoods”

The actress-turned-author posted a photo of herself kissing her daughter Nitara while explaining how parents are not responsible for providing a ‘perfect childhood’ to their kids. “Our job is not to give our children perfect childhoods. It is to fill their heads with ideas, to honour their strengths and make them aware, but never underline their weaknesses. It involves loving them madly and throwing a few vegetables down their throats. We need to permanently dedicate a large number of our neurons towards their mosquito bites, bad grades and hurt feelings,” she wrote.

Khanna further continued, “And we must do all of this, day after day, without losing sight of everything we are and can be, along with being their mothers.” She also asked her followers to share their views on the same.

Two legendary lyricists – Javed Akhtar and Gulzar – shared the stage together for the launch of the book Jadunama on January 9. It’s based on Akhtar and written by Arvind Mandloi. During the course of the interaction, Akhtar shared a funny incident of a man mistaking him for Gulzar and how he played along with him.

Narrating the incident, he said, “Shabana and I were at the airport when the airline staff asked us to sit and said they will get our luggage. Shabana was sitting right next to me when a gentleman approached me and said, ‘Adaab Gulzar saab!’ I responded with an adaab too. He then wondered, ‘How come Gulzar saab is at the airport? I told him that Javed Akhtar saab is coming, so I am there to receive him!”

Sharing the funnier part of the conversation, Akhtar added, “He got confused that such a big man has come to receive Javed Akhtar! He asked me, with disappointment in his voice, ‘You are here to receive Javed Akhtar?’, I replied, ‘I always come. Wherever Javed Akhtar is coming from, I always receive him at the airport’. The disappointment in his face, that he is a fan of Gulzar, and Gulzar has come to receive Javed Akhtar! He said, with a confused, disappointed tone, ‘Achcha… Chalta hu Gulzar saab,’”

Akhtar said that he was bewildered by the confusion because he and Gulzar don’t look similar at all. He said people like the man he met at the airport have “average intelligence” and their brain is like a “kabaad khana” (storeroom). “Whatever they find, they put it in kabaad khana, they don’t associate with it. If they see a poet, they put their hands inside the storeroom and whatever name they get, they say it,” said Akhtar.

A day after the launch of Jadunama, Gulzar attended the musical night Mehfil-e-Khaas organized to promote the upcoming film Kuttey. While interacting at the event, Gulzar started narrating a past event but he couldn’t remember the details. On this he said on a funny note, “I wish I had even two percent of the memory that Javed Akhtar saab has.”

A week ago, the trailer of Netflix’s upcoming show, Trial by Fire broke the internet. The Abhay Deol and Rajshri Despande starrer web series is scheduled to start streaming on the OTT platform on January 13. As the release is around the corner, the actor is busy with the promotions of it. During one such stint of his, Abhay opened up about “being a rebel” and how he is not “much of an outcast” in the industry anymore.

Abhay Deol recalls being the “rebel rule breaker”; feels he is not “much of an outcast” now

It all happened during his recent conversation with Indian Express. “I was in a good head space when the show came to me. I was hopeful that change is here, more challenging subjects will be made, and more actors of diverse backgrounds will get a chance. It is already happening, maybe that’s why I got the show, because I was in a very positive headspace that there is space for someone like me too in my industry,” said the actor.

He further explained, “There was space for me earlier, but in a more conformist manner and I could have capitalised on it a lot better, but my own head space was very defiant at the time because I really wanted change. Now that the change is here, 20 years later, you get a different reception. You also react differently.”

Adding more to make his point clear, Deol said, “There wasn’t much of a reception for me the way I am, perhaps the way they wanted me to be. There was a lot of warmth, don’t get me wrong. They were nice, they weren’t rude, they just… I was the rebel rule breaker, and that doesn’t translate very well. Now I am not so much of an outcast, even though I was born in it, ironically.”

Speaking of the content of his upcoming web show, Abhay said it resonates with him. Concluding his interaction with the portal, Abhay added, “I hoped we would evolve into other diverse characters and ideas other than just the formula. That’s something I have tried from the beginning of my career.”

For the unversed, based on the best-seller, Trial by Fire: The Tragic Tale of the Uphaar Fire Tragedy is a story of parents, who take on powerful forces for over two decades in their struggle for justice, which claimed 59 lives and left over 100 injured.
