Brown, Karisma Kapoor's latest show, has already garnered a following at the Berlin Film Festival before it ever airs. It is a dark and gritty investigative thriller. In a recent interview, the actress spoke about her character in Brown. She suffers from alcoholism and has been severely beaten by life. Curiously, because the story is set in Kolkata, Karisma had to learn Bengali for her part. Not only that, but the actress also had to learn how to roll a joint because her character is a chain smoker. In an interview, when Karisma revealed what compelled her to sign up for Brown. She told ETimes, “When I heard the script for Brown I was wowed. The character of Rita Brown is so different, she's so raw and human. The story touches upon certain topics which are not normally danced with or put forth. I remember my first reaction was, 'Should I do this?' After the narration and experiencing the insistence of Abhinay Deo (director) and the entire team of producers at Zee Studios, I decided to take up the challenge of being Rita Brown. It was a wonderful experience.” Karisma’s character in Brown was that of a chain smoker and an alcoholic. Hence, the actress had to learn to roll a joint. When asked whether it was similar to having a culture shock after getting acquainted with her character in the show, she said, “I wouldn't call it a culture shock, but these are definitely not things that I normally do. I was not in my comfort zone in that sense. But then that is what the challenge of being an actor is, right? And you always want to push yourself. I always want to take myself to the next creative level. Being Rita Brown was an extremely interesting experience and I think a creatively satisfying one at that.” She further added that every show demanded a lot of hard work. “Hard work here was to the point of very nuanced hard work, whether it was on the character, locations, on the script level, on every level of making the show,” she said. Brown had got selected for the Berlinale Series Market Select. Karisma Said, “The honour is that Brown is the only Indian show in Series Market Select at Berlin. It feels very humbling and exciting at the same time. The real victory is that all the hard work that we put into the show is getting noticed. And not just here in India, but on an international platform. It's also encouraging to know that our show has brought an all-new perspective to Indian content on a global stage. The kind of themes and topics that the show highlights are different. And the story tells you its fine to deal with all that stuff.” Brown is a dark and gritty investigative thriller. When the actress was asked what makes it so different, she said, “It is not just a regular crime drama. It is also a human drama. It's a show about human emotions. It's about certain topics that we don't bring to light or put forth too often. I think it's an inspirational story. I would call Rita Brown an inspiration to women around the world. You can be beat up, you can go through certain things, but there is always a way out.” Karisma’s character in the series is an Anglo-Indian character who is a cop. When asked how did she react to the character that was offered to her and how was her experience while playing the role, she said, “Yeah, that was very interesting. We did a lot of work to get that side of the character right. I saw a lot of footage, I had to read about it. We had a lot of workshops with Helen aunty and Soni (Razdan) aunty. It was a lot of fun playing an Anglo-Indian character.” Further when she was asked if the show was designed in a way that it would appeal not just Indian audience but to international viewers too, she said, “I don't know. I never thought about that, actually. I never looked at it that way. I don't think it was intentional. I think maybe Abhinay just tweaked the tone of his show in such a way that it has reached an international audience. The idea was always to make something different, a bit out of the ordinary. I don't think we set out to make something that must reach an international audience. It was set out to just be something out of the ordinary.” In the show, Karisma’s character Rita looked jaded. However, she was put in a corner and she had to push through. Comparing Karisma’s character reel life character to her real life, the actress was asked how did she relate to this and whether she could recall a similar situation in her real life where she had to fight back. She said, “That was the most interesting part for me. You don't really see these things with your average Indian female protagonist. Sometimes our characters are made to be superhuman. On the contrary, with Rita we get to see someone who is so beat up and so down and out. I just feel that going through a life journey, you see people, you see things happen in your life and other people's lives. And these are real human emotions that you experience. I think that's what touched me about Rita Brown, that she was so real and raw. Her thought process and her body language is not that of a typical heroine or a typical Indian character. She has not been portrayed as a typical woman. She is totally different.” Brown also stars Helen, KK Raina and Jishu Sen alongside Karisma, Surya Sharma and Soni Razdan and shall be one of the first series to follow a police procedural in an emotionally twistful manner. The powerhouse of talent, Rani Mukerji, is gearing up for the release of her upcoming film, Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway. The posters have intrigued viewers, especially the tagline in the latest poster that reads ‘What would you do if your children were taken from you in another country?’. The trailer of the film will be out tomorrow, that is, February 23, and Bollywood Hungama has come across some interesting information about the film. A source told Bollywood Hungama, “Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway is a special film for Rani Mukerji as this is the first time she has turned singer. A soulful composition in the film has been sung by her and it will be one of the film’s highlights. The song has a mix of Hindi and Bengali lyrics.” This is the first time that Rani Mukerji will be credited as a playback singer in a film. The source further said, “Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway is very close to Rani Mukerji’s heart as it tells an incredible and inspiring story. Hence, when the opportunity came in front of her to lend her voice to a song, she decided to go for it as she wants to give more than 100% to this film.” Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway releases in cinemas on March 17, 2023. Directed by Ashima Chibber of Mere Dad Ki Maruti (2013) fame, it is inspired by the real-life story of a mother, whose children were forced into child services in Norway, a country that is extremely strict with its child protection system. It is produced by Zee Studios and Emmay Entertainment and stars Anirban Bhattacharya, Neena Gupta and Jim Sarbh. Interestingly, though Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway is mainly set in Norway, it was shot in the European country of Estonia. As per reports, due to Covid-related challenges, the team of the film didn’t get visas to shoot in Norway. Hence, the film was then shot in Estonia in a bio-bubble arrangement, in the second half of 2021. Pakistani actress Sajal Ali is currently busy promoting her first international project, Shekhar Kapur’s cross-cultural British romantic comedy What’s Love Got to Do with It? Starring alongside Emma Thompson, Asim Chaudhry, Shabana Azmi, Jeff Mirza, Alice Orr-Ewing, and Oliver Chris, the film releases in the UK in February followed by March 3rd release in India. Amid the promotions, the actress spoke about working with the late actress Sridevi, who passed away in 2018. Speaking to BBC Asian Network during the UK promotions, Sajal Ali recalled how young she was during the shoot of Mom alongside Sridevi. She said that she had developed a good friendship with Janhvi Kapoor who was yet to debut in movies and that Sridevi was guiding her throughout the process of filming the movie. Interestingly, it was also the first movie she worked on. “It was kind of unbelievable for me, sitting in front of her, acting, giving dialogues and stuff like that. You can simply forget everything after simply looking at her. I think an indication of a good actor is that it is important for them to be a good human too. Sometimes you get intimidated seeing actors and they understand that the other person is kind of scared and intimidated. But, if you know, the first thing a good person, a good actor will do is make the other person comfortable. She was that kind of actor. She had a lot of empathy and kindness towards me.” Recalling the scene where she wears a red dress in Mom, she continued, “I got ready and she said ‘Oh, get some curls done to your hair’. She was acting like a mother to me although she was simply a co-star and if she didn’t say anything, it wouldn’t have made much difference. But, just the fact that she actually cared about how I looked and how I can look better, won my heart completely.” Furthermore, when asked about her equation with Janhvi Kapoor, who accompanied Sridevi to the sets of Mom during the shoots, Sajal Ali said that they had become close. The actors had met each other after several years at Filmfare Middle East 2022 award show and the video of the two of them hugging each other had gone viral. She said, “We met after six years after my mother and her mother passed away. Probably because of our mothers as well, we sort of became quite close. I connect with her and she does the same. We used to keep in touch but obviously, she started her career as well and got busy.” Sajal Ali is busy promoting What’s Love Got To Do With It? The story is set between London and Lahore, love and friendship, tradition and iconoclasm. What’s Love Got To Do With It? is a cross-cultural British romantic comedy that follows a documentary-maker and dating app addict Zoe (Lily James), for whom, swiping right has only delivered an endless stream of Mr Wrongs, to her eccentric mother Cath’s (Emma Thompson) dismay. For Zoe’s childhood friend and neighbour Kaz (Shazad Latif), the answer is to follow his parents’ example and opt for an arranged (or “assisted”) marriage to a bright and beautiful bride from Pakistan. As Zoe films his hopeful journey from London to Lahore to marry a stranger, chosen by his parents, she begins to wonder if she might have something to learn from a profoundly different approach to finding love. A while back, there were reports claiming that Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi would feature yesteryears diva Rekha. However, the rumours were quickly shot down, with confirmed reports that Rekha would not be featuring in the series. Now, Bollywood Hungama has learnt that though the actress was not too keen on featuring in the series, the filmmaker is continuing his pursuit to feature the actress. Revealing details about the same a well-placed industry source informed Bollywood Hungama, “Sanjay Leela Bhansali wanted Rekha to play a prominent role in Heeramandi. However, the actress was reluctant to feature in the series and talks between the two soon fell apart. However, SLB has not given up the idea of having Rekha feature in Heeramandi. As it stands right now, Bhansali is still in talks with Rekha but this time for a much smaller part.” Ask for details of what Bhansali has planned for the actress and the source continues, “Currently, Bhansali is in talk with Rekha to feature in a special song sequence at least. He is adamant on having Rekha feature in Heeramandi even if it for a small part.” While talks between the two continue, the show itself, will explore the cultural reality of Heeramandi, a dazzling district, through the stories of courtesans and their patrons set against the tumultuous backdrop of the Indian freedom struggle of the 1940s. Bollywood is known for its love stories. But we have also had a lot of films based on love between friends, right from Sholay to Dil Chahta Hai to 3 Idiots. In 2013, a film on the same relation arrived in the form of Abhishek Kapoor’s Kai Po Che. Apart from being successful, it also managed to stand apart from other mainstream films on friendship purely because of its rooted storyline and much more realistic approach. Based on author Chetan Bhagat’s book ‘The 3 Mistakes Of My Life’, Kai Po Che saw Sushant Singh Rajput, Rajkummar Rao and Amit Sadh play three friends growing up in Ahmedabad during the early 2000s and their coming of age through some serious events that took place back then. Amrita Puri led the female cast of the film as she played Sushant’s sister and Rajkummar’s love interest. As Kai Po Che completes 10 years today, the actress looked back at the making of the film in an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama. Amrita said that she is proud to be a part of a film that is iconic, still talked about and loved. The actress was relatively new 10 years ago. Her casting happened unplanned as she met Abhishek Kapoor at a party and got talking. “He asked ‘What do you do?’ He didn’t know that I am an actor. Then I told him that I am an actor. So, he thought of me for the role of Vidya Bhatt and asked me to audition,” she said. She auditioned with Mukesh Chhabra and a month or two later she was told that she has bagged the role. Although Kai Po Che has quite a few dramatic twists, it stayed away from melodrama. This was also seen in the subtle performances of the cast. Amrita told us that they achieved this through workshops with Mukesh Chhabra. “We did character development and script reading with Gattu (Kapoor) and the rest of the cast,” she said. “He said that he wanted my character to be cute and sweet but at the same time flirtatious. He said those scenes need to be like kachcha kairi (raw mango). All this really helps you get into your character.” One of the biggest challenges for Amrita was her diction since her character was from Ahmedabad. “I had to work a lot on my diction with a diction coach because I am from Bombay; I am urban and so is my accent. There was some Gujarati (in the dialogues). The pol in Ahmedabad is very old school. It should look like I am from there,” she said. The other challenge was the scorching heat of the summer. In fact, she revealed that Sushant once got a heat stroke and later on, almost everyone faced issues related to the heat. As Amrita played Rajkummar’s love interest, the two had to shoot together on quite a few occasions. “At that time, he (Rajkummar) wasn’t a known name as he was relatively new,” she said. “He was very honest, sincere and hardworking. But he also wants his co-star to shine as an actor. We would work on the scene and dialogues.” She also had a good time shooting with Sushant and Amit. “All of us were quite new back then and very excited. When you are new, you are also naïve and fresh and there is that idealism as well; you haven’t seen the world yet. We got along very well. Each of us wanted to prove ourselves,” she said. Kai Po Che was the Bollywood debut for Sushant Singh Rajput. But he was already popular because of his hit TV show Pavitra Rishta. Apart from playing Amrita’s brother on screen, SSR also played his scooty coach off screen. “I didn’t know how to ride a scooty; I still don’t know much,” said Amrita. “But I had to ride it because girls in Gujarat and Ahmedabad do that. So, Sushant became my scooty coach. We used to ride around Aaram Nagar (in Mumbai). Everyone used to recognize him and run after the scooty. At times, I couldn’t ride properly as they used to surround us to see him. So, we had a lot of fun memories like that.” Looking back at Kai Po Che after a decade Amrita feels emotional. “It’s very nostalgic,” she said. “At that time, we didn’t even know that it will be such a big hit. You don’t realize when you are shooting and that that time won’t come back. Now Sushant is no more, so it’s very sentimental and nostalgic. I always get emotional when I am talking about it. When I think of Kai Po Che, I feel a lot of love for everybody who was involved. All the actors and crew. A couple of days ago, the actor was surrounded by a bunch of fans when a woman tried to forcefully kiss him. Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt took to her Instagram on Tuesday to blast paparazzi for invading her privacy at her home. The actress was quite furious when photographers clicked her photos inside her house. The actress took to her Instagram story to call out the publication for sharing her pictures and even tagged Mumbai Police. Alia wrote, “Are you kidding me? I was at my house, having a perfectly normal afternoon, sitting in my living room when I felt something watching over me. I looked up and saw two men on the terrace of the neighbouring building with a camera right at me. In what world is this okay and is this allowed? This is a gross invasion of someone’s privacy. There’s a line that you must not cross, and it is safe to say that all lines were crossed today.” Rallying behind her and calling out the invasion of privacy, Karan Johar, Anushka Sharma, Arjun Kapoor and Janhvi Kapoor also shared their grievances. Anushka Sharma, who had faced a similar incident, shared Alia’s story and wrote, “This is not the first time they are doing this. About two years ago we called them out for the same reason! You’d think it would have made them respectful of people's space and privacy. Absolutely shameful! They were also the only guys posting the photos of our daughter despite repeated requests.” Karan Johar, who is close to Alia, also posted, “There is no justification to this absolutely disgusting invasion of privacy. The song starts with a grand family celebration at an ancestral house amid a lush green farm. Kubbra Sait was recently seen in Amazon Prime Video’s acclaimed web series Farzi. Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan is an all-time blockbuster and now, he has already moved on to completing his other two films, Jawan and Dunki. Jawan will be his next release and there’s already considerable hype for it, especially after its massy first look teaser was released last year. Moreover, it’s directed by South director Atlee, who knows the pulse of the audience. And with Pathaan becoming a Rs. 500 crores grosser, the excitement for Jawan has gone many notches higher. Interestingly, there’s no clarity yet on who’ll be distributing and releasing Jawan. While Bollywood Hungama was enquiring about it, we stumbled upon an interesting piece of information. A source told Bollywood Hungama, “Almost six months ago, Zee Studios was in talks with Shah Rukh Khan’s production house Red Chillies Entertainment, also the producers of Jawan, to come on board as the studio partner. But Zee had to decline as the acquisition cost went above Rs. 300 crores, to around Rs. 350 crores.” The source continued, “These talks took place nearly six months ago. This was a time when films were flopping left, right and centre. Also, Pathaan had not released yet and had wowed the industry and trade with its achievement of collecting Rs. 70 crores in a day and a lot more. Hence, Zee probably decided to back out as they felt that it might be financially unviable.” The source, however, has no update about the present-day scenario and whether Zee Studios has once again shown interest or some other studio has commenced discussions with Jawan’s makers. Besides Shah Rukh Khan, Jawan also stars Priya Mani and Sanya Malhotra. Vijay Sethupathi, who recently debuted in the Hindi-speaking markets with the acclaimed web series Farzi, is reportedly playing the antagonist. Post the success of Pathaan, Kartik's Shehzada, which was supposed to be out on February 10 instead released on February 17 in theatres. Helmed by Rohit Dhawan, Shehzada also featured Ronit Roy, Paresh Rawal, Manisha Koirala, and Kriti Sanon. It is a Hindi remake of Telugu movie Ala Vaikunthapurramloo, which starred Allu Arjun. In an interview with RJ Siddharth Kannan, Kartik revealed why the release of Shehzada was delayed. He said, “The decision was mostly of the producers and directors. Main fan hoon Shah Rukh sir ka waese bhi toh mujhe toh accha hi laga ki jab yeh shift karne ka decision horaha tha. Because woh ek tareeke se jab film aarahi hoti hai, not that I'm saying ki koi chota koi bada, I'm saying ki already woh run karrahi hai woh film. Woh bohut acche se chali hai film. Uske saath wahape aana woh correct nahi lagraha tha producers ko, so they took a call to just delay it by a week jisme kuch aesa dikkat nahi lagraha tha. We went ahead with it.” Sharing his views on Pathaan, Kartik said, “Maine dekhi, I also reacted to it. Mujhe toh bohut acchi lagi. Kaafi acchi lagi mujhe. Mujhe infact Shah Rukh-Salman sir saath mein dekhne ka mauka mila bohut time baad woh mereko bohut zada acha laga.” Earlier, the producers had shared a press note informing the delay of the film. Deewar was first offered to Shatrughan Sinha, and the veteran actor himself revealed this. It all happened during his conversation with Aaj Tak when he recalled returning the script of Deewar. He asserted, “I must have done about 250 films… There are certain films that I regret not being able to do. Like Deewar. It was written for me. They had approached me. The script was with me for about six months. There was a clash of thoughts between some people and I returned the script.” He further added, “Similarly, with Sholay. I was supposed to do it; the role which my friend Amitabh Bachchan eventually did. Some people wanted me to play the role of Gabbar Singh. But that time I had passed the phase of playing a villain. I was a new, popular star doing several films. My friend and great filmmaker Ramesh Sippy was not able to tell me the exact dates he wanted from me. He would say, ‘Just come to Bangalore, we will work’. But I had so many films at that point of time.” Signing off on a good note, the 76-year-old actor said, “The way I couldn’t do Sholay or Deewaar, there is a regret. You can call it human error. But there is also happiness, that these films gave national icon and national star Amitabh Bachchan such a solid platform. Bollywood actor Jaideep Ahlawat, who has worked on projects like Raazi, Paatal Lok, and Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar among others, was most recently seen in An Action Hero starring alongside Ayushmann Khurrana. However, the film didn't work at the box office back in December 2022 but found a new life on Netflix. Ahlawat has said that he felt angry about this and thought that it was wrong that it didn't fare well at the box office. When asked if the film didn't get its due credit, Jaideep Ahlawat told Indian Express, “Yes, I definitely feel that. I feel a little bad for Anirudh (Iyer) also, he is a first-time director and he is an amazing filmmaker and an amazing human being. So I felt a little bad for him, the film also and for me, I felt yeh galat hai.” He said, “And then when the film came on OTT, everybody watched and loved it. I felt a little angry also. People (after watching it on OTT) wrote how they wished they had watched the film in theatres. Everybody who watched it in theatres or on OTT loved the film. I haven’t come across anyone who said yeh kya bakwaas film hai (what nonsense this is). It feels weird, I was like yeh samajh nahi aaya aise kyun hua (I don’t know what went wrong). It was a Bollywood masala film with so many things in it. There were so many factors in it, so many little social issues were addressed in the film. We told the story in a good way, but it showed yeh sab aapke aas paas ho raha hai (this is all happening in your immediate surrounding).” Meanwhile, Jaideep Ahlawat has Sujoy Ghosh's adaptation of the Japanese novel Devotion Of Suspect X with Kareena Kapoor Khan and Vijay Varma. The release date of the highly anticipated Project K has been announced. Starring Prabhas, Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan in the lead roles, the upcoming Nag Ashwin directorial will hit the theatres on January 12, 2024. The announcement was made on the occasion of Mahashivratri on January 18. The first poster was unveiled on Saturday along with the announcement of the release date. Ted Sarandos, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Netflix, will conduct a question and answer session with Sanjay Leela Bhansali today, Saturday February 18. Bhansali will be quizzed on the fast-evolving relationship between cinema and the OTT platform. Although it is a web-series, Heeramandi, which he is making for Netflix, is Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s most ambitious work to date. “In terms of vision and labour, Heeramandi is the toughest project of my career so far. Yash Raj Films’ latest offering Pathaan has turned out to be a winner at the box office, not just in India but also world over. Apart from Shah Rukh Khan’s powerful act, this was also because of the international standard of stunts and action sequences the Siddharth Anand directed film offered. This was made possible because the makers roped in the Hollywood action director Casey O’Neill for the film. He has worked in some of the internationally acclaimed and successful Hollywood flicks, including Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Jack Reacher and Top Gun: Maverick. Casey planned and executed some of the exciting action sequences in Pathaan. O’Neill said that he found some similarities between Cruise and Khan after working with both of them. “They are both true professionals in their craft and so talented. Tom Cruise is a fearless actor who lives and breathes his craft and wants to push the envelope when it comes to his body and his cinema to only entertain audiences. SRK is just the same,” he said in a statement. He added, “Shah Rukh Khan has pushed his body, he has unlearnt and learnt action to deliver Pathaan as an entertainer like no other. Both are driven and committed lovers of cinema who will do whatever it takes to make the audience happy. I have worked with Tom on many and exciting films. We all have enjoyed working with each other through the years. It was a pleasure working with another global movie star like Shah Rukh Khan and seeing him transform into an action star that no one has ever seen before.” Heaping praises on Khan, O’Neill added, “SRK is an exceptional athlete and performer. He can adapt into many different action sequences and excel in the process of movie magic for the big screen. He is a true gentleman and an amazing actor and I was honoured to be a part in the making of Pathaan with him and the entire crew.” O’Neill planned the Dubai action scene and the ice lake bike chase in Pathaan, two of the most liked moments from the film. Talking about the latter, he said, “In collaboration with director Siddharth Anand, we came up with an exciting chase on the snow and ice, taking into consideration the vast beauty Siberia has to offer. This showed up in such dramatic fashion and really made the action of that scene look like no other. They have previously worked in Vijaypath, Haqeeqat, Thakshak, Fitoor, Drishyam, Golmaal Again, De De Pyaar De and Drishyam 2. Bholaa is the Hindi remake of the Tamil blockbuster Kaithi. The film, released in 2019, was an action thriller directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. The film was headlined by Karthi alongside Narain and Dheena. It was produced by S. R. Prakashbabu and S. R. Prabhu under the banner Dream Warrior Pictures and co-produced by Tiruppur Vivek under the banner Vivekananda Pictures. Meanwhile, Ajay Devgn returns to the big screen after the success of Drishyam 2 with Bholaa which is a story of a father who will fight anyone who comes in the way of his quest to reach his young daughter. Shah Rukh Khan is on a high thanks to Pathaan. Its blockbuster success has raised hopes for his forthcoming film, Jawan. The film created a frenzy just on the basis of its first look teaser, which was launched way back in June last year. Moreover, it is directed by Atlee, who is known for making blockbuster, massy films down South. As a result, the expectations are immense from Jawan not just for the audiences but also trade and industry. Recently, it came to light that Jawan’s shooting will be over in a month’s time. According to a report in Dainik Bhaskar, 130 days of filming have already been done and around 30 days of work are left. As per this article, Shah Rukh Khan will be shooting an intense chase sequence in Mumbai. Interestingly, he plays a double role and the chase sequence is between both the characters played by the superstar. A source told Bollywood Hungama, “While Pathaan was also an action film; the action in Jawan will be different. It’s mostly shot in real locations and blockbuster director Atlee has treated these sequences in his massy style, aided by action directors Sunil Rodrigues and ANL Arasu. It also fits well with the post-pandemic demands of seeing larger-than-life and fascinating stuff on the big screen. In that regard, Jawan is just the right film and will promise loads of entertainment to the viewers.” Besides Shah Rukh Khan, Jawan also stars Priya Mani and Sanya Malhotra. Vijay Sethupathi, who recently debuted in the Hindi-speaking markets with the acclaimed web series Farzi, is reportedly playing the antagonist. Popular South music director Anirudh Ravichander has composed the music. Produced by SRK’s company Red Chillies Entertainment, Jawan will be released on June 2, 2023, across five languages - Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada.
